Damn, she was seriously smart then. People only spoke Latin if they were like, super smart, right? I mean, why else? “Woah. I speak like, a little bit of Italian? My grandfather was Italian, but I never could really get my head around other languages.”

For him, music was the only language that mattered. The way that patterns and rhythms and subtle shifts in key could be manipulated to say whatever needed to be said, that was his language.

“I know a little Italian too, but I’m not confident enough to have a conversation in the language,” she joked. 

Sylvia definitely only ever felt confident either speaking in English or French if she had to, which the latter tended to happen when she went on holiday to visit her mother’s side of the family. 

Sylvia had almost forgotten why they were walking together in the first place, “Now what course texts were you looking for? If I know what you’re looking for then I can give you better directions to where the course texts are in the library.” 

If he had thought they were supposed to be on the top floor then they might be, but she just wanted to make sure they were and they weren’t going to the wrong place for what he wanted. 

“I kind of have this place memorised in my own way so know where pretty much everything is, oh, well I wouldn’t be a good librarian if I didn’t,” she joked again.

Anna lit up at the suggestion. She’d had The Hating Game on her list for a while, but she hadn’t been able to find a copy at the library just yet. On the other hand, she’d totally forgotten that Jenny Han had another book series.

“Ohmygosh, I love Jenny Han! Have you read To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before?” Anna said enthusiastically. “I’m a big rom com girl. And those books are just the perfect rom com series.”

"Jenny Han is such a wonderful author; she has this way of writing the most beautiful stories and making them about more than just the love triangle."

Of course, Sylvia could mention other things about the author, but it was moments like this that she cherished. The opportunity to talk with someone about book-related topics such as authors and books they enjoyed reading.

It was nice to see Sylvia again. She was so busy with From Farm to Table that sometimes it felt hard to make time for her friends. Especially now that she was dating Drakken and definitely putting…a bit more into that relationship than her friendships…oops!

But she was making up for it now! Drakken was still stuck at work for a little while longer, so he was meeting her later. Vixey had closed up shoppe, knowing no one was going to be there anyway with the carnival happening. So, here she was! With Sylvia. Standing in line for Tiana’s beignets.

“Have you had her pumpkin spice beignets?” she asked, her arm looped through Sylvia’s. “They are so good. Like–if you think her regular ones are good, just wait!”

Sylvia hadn't seen Vixey in a long time; between working long hours at the library and visiting her parents when she could, she found it difficult to make plans with friends. She was trying not to spend too much time at the library, but it was difficult because all she wanted to do was spend all of her time there, which was bad.

So there she was, not in the library, but at the fall carnival with Vixey. Even though she enjoyed the fall carnival, she preferred this time of year because who wouldn't want to curl up at home with a hot chocolate and a good book on a night like this? But, on the other hand, she hadn't seen Vixey in a long time and it would be nice to catch up.

"Oh, no. I don't believe I have, but I'm sure they're great." She smiled; Sylvia had tried Tiana's regular beignets and they were phenomenal, so Sylvia assumed her pumpkin spice ones were equally so.

Anna shrugged. She got a lot of recommendations for things that were popular. True crime included. But she didn’t just want to read something popular. She wanted to know what Sylvia liked! A personal recommendation was so much better.

“Yeah, that makes sense! I know a lot of people like true crime. But I guess I’m wondering, like, what do you like to read?” Anna prodded. “If you like fiction, what kind of fiction do you like? What’s the best thing you’ve read recently?”

Oh, so she wanted to know what Sylvia liked? That made sense. Well, at the moment Sylvia was reading a lot of Young Adult fiction which made for exciting adventures especially when she used the ‘Pagemaster’ bookmark. 

“Well, I’ve been reading a lot of Young Adult fiction lately. I would say The Hating Game by Sally Thorne was really good and also The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy by Jenny Han was really good too.”

Sylvia Eve Marpole was born to Edward and Rose Marpole, who were overjoyed with their bundle of joy after doctors told them they couldn’t have children, so her parents lavished her with everything she could ever want. But this did not make Sylvia spoiled or snobbish; instead, she grew up to be a caring and kind person with a passion for books in all forms.

Her love of books fueled her desire to become a librarian when she grew up, so she frequented the local library frequently, so much so that her parents gave Sylvia her own library in their home. She knew her parents meant well, and she appreciated the gift, but she preferred going to the local library because she enjoyed exploring as she looked for books that piqued her interest, and the librarian was always pleasant to her, letting Sylvia assist her with jobs around the library, so having her own library at home wasn’t the same thing in her eyes.

School was just something for her to get through so that she could get older and start living her adult life (talk about wishing your life away) and become a librarian. She finished her primary and secondary education in Swynlake before enrolling at Pride University, where she earned a double degree in Literature and Business Administration. She also pursued a Masters degree in languages.

Then came the day of her job interview for Pride University Librarian, and she was a nervous wreck; this was the day she had spent her entire life preparing for, and she was afraid it would all be for naught. But, with her parents’ help, she was able to calm down and realise that she had this in the bag; no one else was more qualified for the job than she was. Sylvia received a phone call a few days later informing her that she had been hired, and she couldn’t believe it. Her wish had been granted, and she was eager to get started.

She was about two years into her job when she noticed something mysterious peeking out at the top of one of her favourite books; it piqued her interest and she had to take a look, which is when she was transported into the world of that book. To say the least, her job and life were never the same after that.

Jeremy pursed his lips, but nodded. Well, that could be true! 

“Woah,” he nodded. “That’s, like, super cool.” And super clever, wow! That sounded like a heck of a lot of work, like she was the kind of person who would have been snapped up by all kinds of companies, and she was working here in the library? Maybe it was a passion thing, he could respect that. 

“So what languages do you speak?”

“Thank you.” Sylvia smiled at him; she knew she could have done any job in the world, but the library is where she wanted to be. She couldn’t see herself doing any other job or being anywhere else. 

“Oh, so I speak French, Latin and I can speak a little of most other languages, but French is the one I’m most fluent in.”

That was the question, wasn’t it? Anna had always thought she had a pretty good handle on her reading tastes. But lately, her TBR was starting to bore her. She still loved a rom-com summer beach read, but she was starting to think it was time to branch out.

“Do you like nonfiction?” Anna asked, electing to go in a completely different direction. “Like, fun nonfiction. Stuff on weird topics, or memoirs about interesting people, stuff like that. I was never much into it— my Bookstagram’s called “Anna Fiction”— but I think it might be time to try something new.”

Sylvia kept herself busy, organising her desk as she waited for the brunette to think, and then it sounded like she knew what she was looking for. So, Sylvia listened to the other woman before suggesting some things she might like.

"I've read some nonfiction books before, but they've mostly been informative and not very entertaining," Sylvia tried to recall. "Are you interested in true crime? They are the most frequently requested books in the library. It could be worth a look."

“Awesome, thanks,” he said, feeling unbelievably grateful - not just that she was showing him the way, but that she wasn’t making a big deal out of it. 

“Guess they must have been putting off all their studying for third year, huh?” He smiled, knowing full well that if it weren’t for the fact he knew he’d get no work done in his dorm, with all the distractions, that he’d probably not have been so keen to come here first off either. 

“Oh? So you were a student here too? What did you study?”

"There's no problem," she said. She never liked to make anyone feel bad, especially if they were visiting the library for the first or tenth time.

"Perhaps, or they simply never found the library," she shrugged. "Weirder things have happened." This was a true statement, as one of her classmates didn't even realise the library existed until she showed them.

“Yes. I studied both Literature and Business Administration which gave me a double degree. Then I went on to earn a Master’s degree in languages."

– “Oh, uh, yeah for sure!” said Dipper. He nodded, jiggling his foot a little. “It’s called A Swynlake Mythos, by the way. If that helps!” He added this after the fact, when Ms. Marpole had already turned around, so he wasn’t sure if she’d heard.

Crap. He should’ve just led with that, huh? It was really dumb of him not to just lead with that! He’d make her job easier and also he wouldn’t seem so entitled.

Okay. He needed to calm down. This was just a regular library interaction. He had dozens of those. (And yet, each time he went through similar mental hoops, because that was just who he was as a person.)

Sylvia had heard him mention the title of the book at the last minute, which she was grateful for because it made it ten times easier to find the book in question. She'd been gone for longer than the two minutes she'd promised, and the only reason was that she couldn't find the book she was looking for. 

She was about to give up looking when she noticed the book on her way out; thank goodness, because she hated disappointing people when the book, they wanted was already borrowed by someone else.

Sylvia approached her desk again with the book in tow, “So I managed to find it eventually. Even wearing my glasses, I couldn’t see it right in front of me,” she joked. 

She started pottering about on her desk, looking for her time stamp so she could check it out for him, oh she would need his university library card. “Do you have your library card with you?”

Take a Chance on Movie Night || Gilvia

Gil was… trying to get out more. 

Look, it wasn’t because he actually wanted to get out more. But it was clear that after a year and a half, the RAS was probably not going to relocate him. He was in Swynlake for the future and it would benefit all of the agents if he integrated himself into the town more. He’d make connections and avoid suspicions. And maybe have fun! Shiftwell had said. 

Gil doubted it.

Nevertheless, he’d shown up at Al’s Comic Barn for a movie night, but he’d mistaken the time and got there half an hour early. Awkwardly, he stood by a shelf of strange figurines with no mouths and big, dark, soulless eyes. 

“Are you here for the, uh, Mamma Mia movie night?” Gil asked, approaching a nearby person.

Sylvia had not intended to attend the movie night at Al's Comic Barn, but she had heard about it in the library over the previous week and it had piqued her interest. She wanted to come and see for herself how good it was, especially since they were showing one of her favourite movies.

She was nervous to say the least, but maybe she'd meet some real people, which would be great. It's not that she didn't know or spend time with real people; it's just that she spent the majority of her time working in the library, surrounded by books, and while she did interact with students, professors, and members of the public, it wasn't the same.

Maybe she would see people she used to go to school with, being a native to Swynlake and all, but again she wasn’t bothered if she did or not. 

It was just nice to do something different. 

She had arrived at said location but had no idea what time it was supposed to begin; that would have been useful to know. But she was already here, so there was no turning back.

Sylvia had been in the place for less than ten minutes when someone approached her, “Oh, hi.” She smiled at the stranger then asked, “Yes, have I missed it?”

“Really?” He brightened a little, “Thanks!” He’d heard some second-(or was it third?)-hand instructions on how to navigate the library best, but faced with its actual layout none of that had made the slightest bit of sense.

“I’m a first year,” he said, bobbing his head and feeling like he should explain. “I guess you must get loads of us, not knowing where we’re going?”

Sylvia stepped out from behind her desk, “You’re welcome!” She knew what she had been like as a student, forever getting lost in this very library, but she actually hadn’t minded that. Now, she knew the place like the back of her hand, well sometimes. 

“If you just want to follow me then I’ll show you the way,” she waited for him to walk beside her before setting off to show him where he wanted to go. 

“Not just first years, I had a third year not know where their course material was even though they had been using the same learning materials over the last three years.” 

She did recognise that it was a big library and people can forget things, “It can happen though. The amount of times I used to get lost in this very library as a student was ridiculous.”

So this was embarrassing.

But look– he’d already asked Simba about a million questions about teaching yeah? He didn’t feel any closer to being ready for his first day. Wikihow was also not helpful. So fine, yeah, he was here– looking for a book. And he’d come to the library because he couldn’t risk looking Belle in the eye when he checked out some self-help manual on teaching.

Here was the problem. Despite going to this school for so many years, he had basically…hardly used the library. 

“Er,” uttered Ber. “Uh– yeah, I uh– I need um… a recommendation for er… a book about.. teaching.” 

Sylvia nodded, listening to what he was saying and he sounded a little nervous so if she could help him then she would. 

“I think we have a few books in the self-help section. I’m sure of it,” she was at least 97% percent sure anyway. 

Plus if they didn’t have any, then she could recommend he go to Chapter Three because they had more up-to-date books than the library did. 

“Was there anything in particular you wanted?” She had forgot to ask him that, because then that was a complete different section altogether.

Louie was very sure this was not going to win him any points with the librarian. But well…it wasn’t his fault the book had gotten stuck between his dorm bed and the wall and he’d struggled to get it out. The pages were only like…sort of bent. 

A weak smile spread across his face. “So uh…I need to return this book…it’s seriously not my fault this happened but yeah.”

Sylvia looked at the young man then to the book in his hand, oh, this was unacceptable. She couldn't believe he had the audacity to return a book in the condition it was in, if only she could genuinely stop him from taking any more books out.

Well, he didn't know that she couldn't so she put her best stern face on before speaking, "This is unacceptable. If this is how you treat books, then I don't think we can let you borrow any in the future."

“Oh, yeah I was wondering if the book I put a hold on was available?” Dipper asked. He tapped his fingers on the side of the counter, not  because he was impatient but because he was anxious — which had nothing to do with Ms. Marpole, who was always perfectly nice and helpful, but had everything to do with who Dipper was as a person, really. Somehow, asking a simple question about a library book made him incredibly anxious. “The one about myths and legend in pre-Industrial Revolution Swynlake?”

“I can have a look. What was the name again?” Sylvia was trying to remember his name, she was quite good with names but today she just couldn’t. Then he told her a description of the book, oh that might help, she had seen that book somewhere in the back. “I think it’s in the back somewhere, can you wait here? I’ll be two minutes.”

Anna loved the library. Even when it was exam season and she was there until four AM and she kind of wanted to cry– the library was still there for her. And in calmer times, like now, Anna could find her next great read!

“Hi!” Anna chirped, stopping at the desk. “I was wondering if you could make a recommendation? I’m trying to get as much fun reading in before the school year starts and I have to do school reading.”

Sylvia recognised the young woman from her frequent all nighters here, she didn’t always stay till late in the morning but if Sylvia did then she made sure that all the students were either awake or if they were sleeping, they were in a safe position and wouldn’t hurt themselves. She knew that feeling as she had been one of those students who pulled all nighters as she crammed for exams and tried to write many essays last minute.

“Of course,” she said with a smile. “What kind of books do you like?” If she could get an idea of what the young woman liked to read normally then she could make a recommendation based on that.
