There's a running theme in The Last Of Us 2: from the moment Joel dies, Ellie can't draw his eyes anymore. We know for a fact she used to drawn them, during the flashbacks we see drawings of him, and Joel even has a drawing of himself that Ellie made him in his house.

But after he dies, the only way she can remember him is when he's bleeding on the ground, face deformed and eyes barely able to open. And during the game, every time she tries to draw him, she can't get them right and end up putting angry black lines instead.

But in the end? Once she let Abby live and go back home? She finally found her closure. Because when you open her journal, there's a drawing of Joel, playing guitar, and she drew his eyes. And that made me really happy.
