I graduated with my MLS in Dec 2013. I started my first professional job 15 hours from my homeland in Jan 2014. Watch me struggle, flail, adapt and achieve.

Had my first out of work socialization. Felt good to drink alcohol and shoot the bull with people. 

On another note, my boss told me I was doing fine here after three months and my take away was that they hired me because I was 'creative and innovative' (his words, not mine :)) and I am living up to it. :) 

So I am feeling awesome about my leap of faith of moving 1000 miles from friends and family.

I love my job. Probably more than someone should. Everyone here is great...with one exception. She is old school and totally not in tune with the progressive movement. She is nosy, bossy and disrespects everyone. I've tried liking her and I'm as sweet as can be when she's around but....grrrr....

This morning I opened the doors to get in and after I got in I turned around to lock them and was yelled at because I should have left them open with five till open. Yeah cause that's professional.

Athiest

I hate that facebook has become a place where I can no longer voice my opinion. If I do I immediately get attacked by my conservative, religious family and 'friends' whom I feel obligated to be 'friends' with on fb. It's so ridiculous that I am an atheist liberal who has been out of the closet but cannot comfortably be so because of the backlash. I could go ahead anyway but for reals. I don't go on fb for a debate. I go there for socializing in a fun way OR i used to. 

So I guess I'll just shout it loud and proud here. 

I'm an atheist and I have strong socialized and liberal leanings politically. 

So there.

Mortality

This past week I visited the motherland to say goodbye to a great man. He is the grandfather to my great partner in life. I wanted to share his life with the world. His love was great and made good men out of his grandsons.

One thing I bonded with Jim over was his love of great vehicles. He was a serial car buyer, always getting the next best thing. Everytime my partner and I are on the road and see one these babies, we exclaim and get all fuzzy inside.

I'm an asshole

I come from a fairly non-sophisticated background. Mostly retail and not high end retail. I feel like the people I worked with were pretty rednecky and I was rednecky along with them. We were crass and vulgar and made vile jokes about male customers and male employees. We talked about everything under the sun with no eye toward political correctness or politeness. 

So this new field of academia with the posturing and carefully choosing your talking points is all very new to me. 

And of course I have made an ass out of myself like everyday since I started.

WTF am I doing?

I've been on the job for two months now and I find myself asking, "WTF am I doing?" Not necessarily an existential question but rather, "WTF should I be doing?"

I've never had a job with this much freedom. I sit around and browse twitter, tumblr, reddit and blogs and try to think of things I can do within the library. I guess letting go of the micromanagement of my past and the need to always be working toward something tangible is incredibly difficult. 

So a lot of times I come into work and feel like this.

I'm sure I'll work past this difficult part of my career.
