an absolutely insipid fucking trend in so many mainstream critical circuits is the proliferation of "spoiler culture" and the avoidance of acknowledging or discussing any plot beats that comprise more than the first 25% of a text lest the reader/listener/whatever get "spoiled"
like surely the most critically astute approach to a piece of media is one that treats it as holistic and deliberate such that its early movements are only fully illuminated by later developments. not to go full vladimir nabokov 'one cannot read a book, one can only ever reread it' but a piece of media is not linear as much as it's made up of a whole bunch of moving parts which operate relative to one another, and the transformation of "the" critical essay into an advertising space that tries to sell the piece to the reader truncates the analytical capacity of the text so severely that most of the time it's barely worth reading at all. and also it's fucking annoying
like if your little essay doesn't write from the assumption that you and your reader both know how the piece ends and have an intellectual curiosity about the whole fucking thing then it's not an essay, it's advertising, you are doing advertising
the fact that philips head (or crosshead for laymans) screws are the universal standard even though they strip so fuckin easily is insane. flat head screwdriver bitches rise up
flat bitches rise up
the two most valid ursula k le guin quotes are the one that compares capitalism to the divine right of kings and the one about kirk being in love with spock
So long as we get to include "the constrained body knows and values the freedom of the mind" because that kind of marries both of yours
um... you are so right.

a while back I made a post along the lines of "every STEM major should have a required 'history of science' course that's just all about previously wrong and bad scientific theories like sperm all containing homunculi and spontaneous generation" and I got a lot of responses like "but STEM majors already have gen ed requirements!" and would not understand why I was specifically asking for a course that would teach people about why science is not infallible and does not exist in a vacuum and THIS IS EXACTLY WHY ACTUALLY
