“I’ll have to take your word for that, I’ve never really experienced muc of that in my life, I’ve been very lucky. I’m sorry for whatever happened to you that made you think you have to feel negatively towards the world. You seem like a great person, Lily. I’m sure you didn’t deserve that.”
“Are you asking to be punched?”
“Nothing has happened to me, I just don’t have my head hopelessly in the clouds. you’re beginning to worry me you know.”
Aria ignored her words opting to keep her mouth shut as worked on her cut. Biting her lip, she nodded. “Likewise, Lili.” Glancing up at her, she tilted her head to the side. “How old are you? If you don’t mind me asking.” She added, merely as a courtesy.Â
Lili frowned at her question, uneasiness rising. “I’m eighteen, I’m an adult, you know.”
“Oh.. and why is that? Isn’t it better to see the world more positively rather than so negatively?”
“In theory, yes. In practice? Absolutely not. To survive in this world you need a healthy does of negativity, it’s the only way to expect what reality will throw at you.”
“Yeah, you mentioned that. And I have to say, that’s pretty far from comforting.” Aria glanced up at her as she started to cleanse the wound and the needle. “How sweet of you.” She nodded, starting to sew up the cut on her abdomen. “You never told me your name.” She mentioned, trying to keep her distracted from the pain. “I’m Aria.”
“Well it’s not really in your job description to be comforted is it?” Lili laid quietly as she was worked on, following any of Aria’s instructions. “Well it’s Lili, if you must know. I suppose it’s nice to meet you, Aria.”
“Wait- why?”
“Because you are way more than a little protective.”
“Yeah, just a little.”
“You’re welcome.”
“My bullshit detector is going off full force right now”
“I guess I’m just a little bit overprotective.”
“I’ll get you a new phone as soon as possible, yeah?”
“A little?”
“Thanks”
“I’m not being suffocating about it, I’d just like to know that you’re safe. I know you’re an adult, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have someone looking out for you.” He paused for a second, nodding, “Yeah, of course.”
“Well I beg to differ Leo, you are worse than my own parents where, but that’s not saying much.”
“Alright then.”
“Alright, just asking.” Aria held up her hands, wheeling herself over to the counter to get the spray and the morphine for the stitches. “I take it you’ve been stitched up before.” She guessed as she started to spray, stopping just before she did so. “This might sting, just please, please don’t punch me.” She lamented, remembering the more than annoyed man on the fifth floor that left her with a pain in her side all day. Spraying the wound quickly, she reached for her arm. “You want pain meds or you want to do deal with the stitches without it?” She asked, knowing that with a lot of people who’ve dealt with a lot of injuries could handle a few stitches without any medication.Â
“Yeah, like I said, not my first time for this kind of stuff” Lili watched her move around the room, and nodded before the girl sprayed, “I won’t, at least not yet”  Lili half smirked, looking at Aria. “No, you don’t have to use up meds on me, I’ll be just fine” Lili reassured her. Lili sat patiently, refusing to flinch as she was fixed up.
“Oh.. right. My dad did mention that a couple times. Well, I’m sure not everyone wants to hurt people. A lot of people, everyone I personally think, just want to be understood, you know?”
“You’re very welcome.” Sawyer smiled brightly, nodding happily, and blissfully unaware of how awkward she was probably making the other girl feel. “Fantastic. I’m Sawyer, by the way.” She offered her hand to the other girl, smile still in place.
“Yeah well, I really don’t think that idea of the world will get you very far on your own here, trust me.”
“Oh, well thank you... I’m Lili, Nice to meet you.” Lili shook the other girl’s hand.
Leo managed a small smile, shaking his head. “I don’t need you to tell me all the details of whatever you’re doing, just let me know that you’re safe and that everything is okay.” He looked back at her, frowning, “Oh, no. It wasn’t a condition, I’ll still get you a new phone regardless.”
“Well I could possibly try, if you just stop being so suffocating about it. I’m an adult Leo. I don’t need you to be all hovering you know?” Lili’s face went from annoyed to a look of surprise, “Really? Oh.. Okay..”
“Yeah, not trying to be, don’t want to hell if you’re important to Sonny then I don’t want to even attempt to. He seriously watches Keeping up with the Kardashians? Now that I did not expect. If you say so, but I’m telling you I’m nothing like that ass.”Â
“How considerate of you. Yeah, he watches it religiously actually. Well, I can tell you that you really are.”
“Sorry… it’s just you look familiar. Have I ever seen you on Hastings street?”
“Hastings? I’ve been there a lot, I suppose you could have”
“Oh.. um, okay then.. Why would I get hurt for staring at someone?”
“Ah, okay. Well, there’s nothing on your face. You look lovely.” She smiled, blushing as her stomach growled. “God, I’m starving. I was heading to Betsy’s before I went down to the shelter. Want to join me? My treat, for creeping you out.”
“Well, in this sort of city you get hurt if you upset the wrong kind of people you know...”
“Thank you I suppose?” Lili laughed lightly, “Uh, yeah, sure, that sounds fine..”
“Some people have fucked up friends and a lot of people, druggies mostly will attack people they know for money and whatever.. Just wondering if you recognized them.” Aria had no intention of going to the police, though it was protocol if someone came in and said they were mugged. More than anything, she was fishing to see if this was some kind of fucked up Cacciatore getting their rocks off on attacking a kid, or if it was one of her family’s associates fucking up. It was more likely it was just a run of the mill mugger, but Aria could never be too careful. She nodded, looking back up at her. “Okay, well I’m just gonna disinfect this, any medical allergies that I should know about? And do you know your blood type. You haven’t lost that much blood but.. just in case.”
“I was just mugged, I didn’t see a thing.” Lili insisted again, her determination to stick with one story taking up most of her focus. So much so that she didn’t even think that carrying a purse with her might tip off that she wasn’t being completely truthful. “No, nothing that I've encountered so far, and I’m AB negative” Lili answered without hesitation, her trips to the hospital nd doctor growing up and even in recent years had the knowledge she needed to hand off always at the tip of her tongueÂ
“Again, sorry. And no, I just.. zone out sometimes. I’m really sorry about that, truly. I know how scary it can be to have some weirdo staring at you in this city. I assure you I wasn’t trying to come off as threatening.”
“Oh, well you might want to work on that, you might end up getting hurt one day because of it.”
“It wasn’t too threatening, just more creepy, like I wasn’t sure what you were doing, or if, like I had something on my face”
Aria rolled her eyes at the utter lack of organization at the hospital, nodding to her in apology. “Sorry about that.” She nodded as she spoke, leading her into on of the rooms. Biting her lip, she glanced at her wound. “You know the person who did this? They a friend of yours or something?” She asked, concern piqued at the sound that this wasn’t her first time in a situation like this. “The knife- was it rusted?” She asked, moving the girls arm away as she inspected the wound closely, rolling on her gloves.
Lili followed along silently and tried not to speak unless it was necessary. “Well I, no.. I was mugged, remember? What kind of friend stabs you?” Lili had faltered for a moment, forgetting what she had told the older girl earlier. “I don’t really know, I think it was, like, just slightly.” she muttered as she laid back, trying to ignore the pain as she was examined. Â
