When I was in my teenage years I have experienced bullying from my classmates and even my own teachers. I struggled a lot through my high school years thinking only how I want to find true friends who will defend or support me against these abusive people who think only of themselves. I studied in a Catholic school, but it never occurred to me like I was studying in one (well except for the fact we had first Friday masses, patron saint festival events, and Christian-Living courses). I felt God was not seeing me and only allows me to suffer from the hands of these people. These abusive kids call me petty names and make laugh of almost everything I do and say for a reason until now I still donāt understand.
When I started on my college and university life in a new school, I felt that itās finally time for me to redeem myself and prove people I have the right to be respected and I am good and smart too. I studied hard to be an achiever in my class, to top most of our exams, to be the best in class, to be known to my professors and have the appreciation that I did not get when I was in my early years. I also strived to meet and know more people and be close to them because I want to have a new set of friends who will pay back all the years of loneliness I felt when I thought I have no real friends in high school. Ā All these things, I earned in College. I count these years as the best years of my life
When I graduated, I felt dignified, competent and happier. I was really happy although I want to achieve more things in my career. With all these success I came with the thought these were all because of me, my hard work, and my intelligence. I remember when all my classmates were going to the Church to pray and become a devotee of St Jude Thaddeus (Patron Saint of Hopeless Cases) to help them ace their exams especially if their chances of passing are so minimal. When they ask me to come with them to pray, I will excuse myself of just going home to study and prepare for an all nighter for an exam that will happen in two weeks. Well donāt get me wrong, I also pray that time. Just that Ā I became obsessed with earning the CPA title and more so becoming ahead of myself and of everyone of my age. I made hasty decisions without thinking about the consequences and risks of unplanned actions. I thought I am indispensible now than ever. Until I felt that knock again from Him saying, āYouāre not yet ready. You seem to have forgotten me.ā
Over the past two years, I seem to struggle a lot coping with the pain of accepting rejections from things I am passionate about. When I see people my age being so successful in their careers at an early age, having all the opportunity to prove themselves, I cannot help but feel envious of why God does not allow me to experience these things too. I felt He was being so unfair to me when I wished no one negative thought (I never wished people who bully me to be hit by a car and die so I will never see them again). I was very supportive of my friendsā dreams in life. But I felt like no one was supporting me at all. This was when depression hit me. Although I seem to disregard this for a long time, thinking I only have to wash out the negative thoughts and just be blindly optimistic.
I felt more anxiety attacks, tremors, stomach ulcers, and vertigo episodes. My weight has reduced significantly and my friends thought I am becoming so thin (even if I felt I am still healthy and normal). When these things got worse making it hard for me to work, I decided to consult a neurologist (I was only concerned with my shaky hands and frequent palpitations because of anxiety attacks). Somehow God made His way to me by referring me instead to a neuropsychiatrist (no solo neurologist was available in the hospital that time). The doctor diagnosed me of having a very active and impulsive nervous system so he put me in antidepressant. I took this medicine twice a day and it lessen my tremors although it made me nauseous and sleepy all the time. I decided I donāt want to take this medicine forever. I said if stress from work triggers this, then maybe I have to think again about my job and file resignation soon.
It also came surprisingly how over these circumstances, I met a coach who not only is my team lead at work but also eventually became my spiritual coach, career mentor, and almost like a second parent. She invited me to some bible study and as I became more invested to this activity, I found the reason of all the pain I felt. It was also because of my own doing. I put no enough trust in God that He will lead me to the right path and decision. That He has His separate and unique plans to each of His children. Without Him, I am nothing. I relied too much on the acceptance of the world around me: my own family, relatives, friends, colleagues, and even the people I want to help. These people I love, they are gifts of God to me, but their acceptance and love are nothing if I do not accept and love my own person. Loving yourself is not an easy task for there is a risk of pride and vanity that come along with it as part of our human nature. You can only love yourself, if you accept the gifts, flaws, and uniqueness God has given you. I realized that you have to accept His unconditional love so you can know how to love yourself. In this way you can only know how to spread love to other people too.
Ā The next time you hear someone is depressed, the best way to help them is to pray for them and remind them they are not alone. Someone will be willing to listen to them Ā and hear them out, and someone divine loves them more than any human being could.
