jess developing a validation kink after meeting dr sorkin??? more likely than you think
dinothologist:
“Dishes are for dishwashers and boyfriends.” Sarah was the one who’d rather chop some firewood instead of doing the dishes. She could no longer leave her wet towels on the floor, and would have to clean up the empty pizza boxes. Having Jess around motivated her to be less of a mess. One of the many good sides of having her sister around. “We can go house shopping. That might sound weird but I really like moving. Not all the time, but having a new place is nice. All those possibilities.”
“Or girlfriends,” Jess added without thinking, offering a smile of her own. It was easier to fit others’ moods when it came to Sarah; who somehow managed to quieten her more destructive or rebellious urges. But as a roommate? Jess was unsure whether she could live up to the part. “And knowing you, it doesn’t sound weird at all. Suspiciously normal, more like it. For the adventurous Sarah Harding,” she teased.
dinothologist:
“We could get a dog,” she offered, as if Jess needed any more bribery. Sarah had been gone so often and so long, and leaving Jess alone always felt like neglecting a child. She didn’t see her as a child, of course, but she wanted to make up for that time. Letters and phone calls or not, they had never been able to make up for the distance. “I can apply for a job at some university nearby. They should be thankful to have me, really. I’m famous.”
“Hitting all my weak spots, are we.“ Sarah, who of course has been there to hear all of Jess’ pleas for pets. Her mother’s Pomeranians were never really fit to play with when you want a Golden Retriever--- a fact that Jess still laments. However, she’s never really had the time or courage to actually consider adoption of one now where she has the means. “Famous, huh? Well I suppose they also line up to do your dishes, then--- because then I’d definitely be listening. My dishes would be envious of the attention.”
dinothologist:
“I’d like to have you closer again.” It got easier since Jess started college and could come and go whenever she wanted; and now with Sarah no longer going to Africa, there was the realistic chance to finally settle down once and for all. “You were the best roommate I ever had. Even when it took a while until you oh so generously stopped smoking inside.” Sarah stuck out her tongue.
The words startle, even though Jess should have seen them coming. This is Sarah, after all, and she deserves better than the immediate pang of panic at the words that ring so similar to an invitation all those years ago... Still, Jess’ voice is tiny when she speaks, but matures as she speaks, eyes inspecting the microscope’s screws. “I-... It did take a while, didn’t it.” She flusters at the thought, “I would love to be....” closer, “--Sisterly again.”
dinothologist:
“That is very true.” Conversations between Sarah and Gerry could often get very awkward and heated. They hadn’t talked for years at a time, here and there. Sarah tried to tone it down when Jess was around. “You know, we should tour the world as the Harding Girls. Only we’re not wrestling, but educating people.” Sarah chuckled at that thought herself.
“He, however, would always disagree. I have better memories of family debates than most Christmas dinners.” Jess grins at the thought, even if it is with a wince that she considers the last Christmas before her parents divorcing. Many Christmases at private schools followed, and with reasonably fewer debates. “I would never turn down a healthy opportunity of education.”
“Please tell me I don’t have an unfortunate twin out there....”
dinothologist:
“Because it didn’t matter. When I first saw you, I knew that it wasn’t your fault. I never blamed you. I always wanted to have siblings, and I was your big sister now, half or not. That never mattered to me. I came to see dad even when I didn’t want to, because that meant I could see you.”
“---In case you ever wonder why you’re my favorite sister, I’ll probably be bringing up this conversation.” That is all she can say, trying to keep herself from flustering. Despite plenty of opportunities and norms, she has never hated Sarah like some siblings do; always been in awe. “Why, I always thought I made for the cleverer conversationalist between myself and Dad.”
dinothologist:
“When mom and dad got divorced, yes. When you were born. I wondered what was wrong with me if daddy marries another woman and has a new baby. I felt replaced.”
“You’ve never told me that.” Is she hurt? Not really; more so that Sarah never told her. She understands the feeling. “I suppose it was him all along. Kids can’t really see that.”
dinothologist:
“Oh, Jessie, no. None of this is your fault. It’s his, and we both know that.”
“I know... I know. I just-- Haven’t you ever felt like the world would make better sense if you took the blame for stuff that happened?”
dinothologist replied to your post: @athrach, thanks to that pic, i now have to...

dinothologist:
Sarah found great joy in feeding her little sister’s thirst for knowledge. She was glad she could be just the person she wished she could have had when she was Jessica’s age. Sarah had hoped that perhaps Isabela was a better mother than her own, but apparently their father had a type. Sarah handed the book over to Jessica, a smile on her lips. “There’ll be a quiz on this when I visit next time,” she said, sticking out her tongue.
“Come here.” Sarah pulled Jessica into a hug, arms wrapped around her, a kiss placed on the crown of her head. “I love you very very much, you hear me? If you’re ever in trouble or need help, you call me, okay? I swear, I’ll pack my things and come to get you in a heartbeat. Promise.” She gave her a gentle squeeze and lightly rocked her in her arms. Jessica was still so young, and Sarah could see the first signs of a failing marriage. She wanted a better life for her little sister, even when her options were limited and her career not ideal for it. She would make it work, if necessary.
Eyes took in the cover, studying the careful binding with both gaze and fingertips as she listened to Sarah’s words. She was not as rude as to open the cover in front of her sister, having some manners after all, but was practically itching to uncover the stories of the printed words. At least she was lucky that both her parents understood the longing for reading (and appreciated that Isabela had not taken away such entertainment); her friend Grace had to hide any books not attached to the curriculum in her locker.
“Will it be graded?” she jested, eyes alit with mischief, grinning widely. Jess easily received the hug, resting her chin on Sarah’s shoulder and catching a whiff of her sister’s perfume. “I love you,” she muttered fiercely, but frowned at Sarah’s words, features turning sadder. They sounded like the stuff adults would say upon farewells, and suddenly Jess got worried. “Are you leaving?” Lips parting, trembling in worry.
@athrach, thanks to that pic, i now have to explain jess’ girl crush on laura.....
dinothologist:
“You joke about that now, but that’s probably how he hit on #3.”
“Well. He did always say I was good for something. Who knew it would be divorce.“
