“You know, photography is about looking at the world and seeing in the world just the pieces of it that make you feel like you’re connected to it. […] It’s those moments of instinct and observation and recognition. It really is about awareness. So, have no doubts. You’re a conscious thinking person. You have passions and feelings about things. Trust that. And go for it. Don’t hesitate. Because in photography, hesitation is lost. And every picture you lose is like a wound. I know. I’ve lost a few myself, and I’ve learned from those. So, have the confidence to just try anything. So, what I’m really saying to you is instinct and impulse, as soon as it arises, react, do it, go for the picture. Don’t think too much. Let the intuitive, physical part of your being, your body and your brain join in that moment, and you’ll make a photograph of something that is disappearing right in front of you, ‘cause that’s what photography does. It tears a little piece of time out of the whole flow of time. And that piece is identified just with you.”

Hiro
“Known for the originality of his photographs, Hiro’s photographic career began at Harper’s Bazaar New York as a fashion, still-life and portrait photographer. Shortly after arriving in America from Japan in 1954, Hiro landed an apprenticeship in Richard Avedon’s studio, soon proving too talented and in a few years rising to extraordinary fashion photography heights. In 1963 he became the only photographer under contract at Harper’s Bazaar. Hiro’s work is characterised by surprises, abnormalities, unusual lighting, Surrealism, the unreal and an astounding and constant vision.”
