After about 220 miles later, we arrived in Sacramento the next afternoon and decided to grab some lunch there before continuing on our route. We found a falafel joint called Tabooli that was quite tasty and satisfied our appetite. We headed out to the truck after and noticed transmission fluid gushing out of the bottom of it. Turns out that the transmission seal had broken while we were hauling over the steep inclines of the passes. We had to get that problem fixed ASAP since it could determine the fate of our 4runner and our trip. Since it was a Sunday, all the shops were closed so we couldn’t do much. Also turned out that the owner of the falafel joint also owned a mechanic shop. He saw us in his parking lot and offered us help. We would be paying half the amount we would than at a regular shop, but it still meant that we were still going to be losing a day. He told us to meet him at his shop the next day at 10am and they could work on it right away. The day was still young so we decided to the hit town of Sacramento and see what it had to offer. Our first stop was an English bar and had some drinks and snacks. It wasn’t too happening so we left and went to another bar called The Depot. It turned out to be a gay bar which I didn’t know at first and hence why we got some weird stares and it took them forever to serve us. Everyone there was probably wondering what the hell we were doing there in the first place. We then went to another bar across the way that had a similar vibe to places in Portland with its wooden interiors. I also found a vegan bakery nearby so I had to stop in. It was called The Plum Cafe and Bakery. I usually like to find vegan bakeries and try their baked goods. It was nice and quaint and had a pretty good selection of items. After that we went to an open mic night comedy club. There were some good acts while others were not that great. While we were walking around, we noticed a pair of dead crows neatly laid out in front of some business doors. It was one of the weirdest things I've seen in my life. We took it as some sort of omen so we ended the night by getting a slice of pizza and sleeping in the truck by a church under some big trees that shaded us. The next morning, we woke up early to meet the guy at his mechanic shop. We showed up at 10am and he was not there yet. We waited a bit longer and grew a little impatient and an hour passed and he still had not shown up. We checked the leakage and it was not leaking as much anymore so we decided to say fuck it, let's flip a coin and let that coin decide our fate. The coin said to keep on truckin' and so we did and made it to Los Angeles, the city of traffic, that night with no problems. We just had to keep an eye on the transmission fluid and took it a little easier than we had been driving it.
The last two weeks of 2013, we decided to take a trip south to Baja California. Driving from Portland, Oregon half way down Baja California and back, our 1987 Toyota 4runner put over a total of 2,500 miles crossing passes, rugged dirt roads, and sandy beaches. We geared up our truck with 14 gallons of water, 7 gallons of reserve gas, and a Thule box filled with truck maintenance needs, and not to mention all of our camping gear.
We both have family in Southern California, so the plan was to stop in Los Angeles for a couple days before we set out on our adventure. The first night we stopped in Mount Shasta, driving about 534 miles, and woke up to its beautiful view. It had been a really mild winter so there was practically no snow at all crossing the pass, and we had a great nights sleep.
