Hulu movie: Fast Color

At home

Today I watched a movie called fast colors, which is about this woman who heads back to her home town to try and control her powers. Her powers are different than the women in her family and results in seizures that causes tectonic plates to shift. This movie was quite interesting and made me appreciate the fact that we have water, considering the fact that the movie takes place in whether there's barely any water in the world and the water that's available is charged at a ridiculously high price. It was also pleasing to see the special effects taking place, like when the daughter(of the main character) broke down a bowl into million of particles and put the particles back together to reform the bowl.

Coffe and Crafts: Origami

So on Monday night, I attended a Coffe house, where we followed different patterns for some type of animal or figure. In the image above, I made a crane and a flapping bird. I tried to make a ballon with wings but that didn't work out too well. It was calming to fold perfectly square pieces of paper into little figurines, and I'm glad I came to the event.

Concert in close quarters with Lelya McCalla

For the first time ever, I attended a Concert in Close Quarters(since it was on a Wednesday instead of a Thursday). It was pretty interesting seeing McCalla play different songs on different instruments(cello, Bass guitar, banjo), but each song describing a part of her and her heritage. It was also interesting to hear about the various of poets/writers who inspired some of the songs that she play(Langston Hughes for example). I like the fact that she's using her music to clarify what Hatiti is actually like, and not how the media portrays it. I really enjoyed listening to McCalla play, and I'm glad I attended this event.

ASA Fall Ball #AFamilyAffair

I attended the Fall Ball, which included a variety of performances. There was dancing, theatrical components, muscial performances, all of them revolving around African culture. It was interesting seeing the culture that each person who perfomed represent, and it was also relieving to see other students who have the same cultural background as me. I also got a bit of an understanding of what the ASA is and what their general mission is.

Event: Still here: Art on HIV/AIDS

Today I went to the stamp gallery and looked at the artwork done in relation to the topic of HIV/AIDS. It was interesting seeing all of the artwork and reading about the purpose of each one. Each artwork had a purpose to bring attention to HIV/AIDS and to continue the conversation on educating people about HIV/AIDS. I specifically decided to take this picture because it represents a collage of people who died from AIDS and there life story. What's showed in stamp is only a model to the real quite which has about 52,000 panels on it.

All Niter's Step Show and Performance Showcase

I attended the All Niter Step show, which was basically all of the major dance groups on campus(including the Greeks) coming out to perform. I really enjoyed the event(even though it was cold) and it was interesting seeing all of the different types of dances done. There was hip-hop, cultural dances(African, Carribean, Latino, Kpop aka Korean, etc.) This event was in no way related to my major, but it's interesting seeing different groups coming out and expressing themselves through the art of dance, whether it's expressing their culture, a Greek society, or themselves as a person. I will admit, some of the dances (mainly from some of the Greek societies) didn't really have the same energy as the song choice(was disappointed about that). As for the cultural groups, I can tell that they really enjoy doing what they do by how much energy was presented in their dance, even though it was cold and windy. It was definitely worth standing in the cold to see these groups perform.

I attended the NextNow Fest which is basically a festival in which all artist come together and display their talents. The group presented in the picture above is a band called "Black Folks Don't Swim". The band performed a mixture of genre, but mainly focused on jazz. This relates to art scholars based on the fact that artist expressed their emotions, ideas, views through different types of art.

I went to one of the coffee house activities and we made shaving cream art. It was my first time doing something like that and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was fun getting messy with the shaving cream, and the art works turned out well (even though my fingers were pink /purple for a couple of days. This is something that I would like to do again, and try to create an image next time.

I went to the Art gallery located in the Art-Sociology building. It was nice seeing at the different type of exhibits there. It was also nice seeing the different styles of painting there, including watercolor and oil painting. I chose this image because I like it better than the other paintings, mainly because of the type of paint style that was done for it.

Last week Wednesday, I watched Ralph Breaks the Internet at Stamp. I really did enjoy the movie and learned something from it too. It was a movie I have never seen before and I'm glad I got to watch it for free 🙂.

As part of the Maryland Gospel Choir, we were asked to perform at Ira Berlin's memorial service. We performed three songs: Many Thousands Gone, I'm Going to Wait, and We Shall Overcome. It was fun going to the African America history museum, and it was also nice learning what type of person Ira Berlin was.

I attended the "Creative Placemaking in Context Gallery Talk". It was interesting hearing how different people who are involve in different arts are trying to integrate that back into their community. I hoping that their plans goes well, and that more people will come to like art, no matter what form it is.

1) What did you see/hear/learn that was completely new to you? When I went to see the soul rebels, I heard a different genre of music I have never listen to before. It was nice listening to something new. I also had a lot of fun with the type of music they played. 2) What was your favorite performance/experience? Why was it your favorite? My favorite experience was(of course) attending the UMD comedy showcase. It was my favorite because I was able to laugh through most of the show, and I really needed a laugh. School has been a bit overwhelming/hard since it started, and that show put me into a much better mood. 3) How might one or more of the performances/experiences relate to the Arts Scholars theme of "Migrations: Populations and Practices on the Move"? I'm not sure about the other performances, but the Soul Rebels fit this theme. The group came from a different state in the south (I can not remember what state it was), and they traveled to Maryland to perform for us. Other than that, I really don't see how the other performances I went to fits this theme.

Going to the scholars convocation was pretty fun. It gave me a good idea of how many scholars are in the program, and which program contains the most scholars. I especially love the light show we did with out phones.
