Wallflower (Blue), 2019

One of four experimental paintings I used as the focus of my first few videos on YouTube. It’s a little rough around the edges, but you see the video here. 

All of my videos have timecodes/chapters so you can always skip past the boring talky-bits. 😅  

At the time I was frustrated that I didn’t have a set methodology for approaching my paintings, so I decided to paint the same image several times over with different painting and inking techniques in order to achieve a good apples to apples comparison.

This is one of my favorites; it was painted in blue India ink with just a splash of watercolor added as the final step.

Wallflower (Pink), 2019

This is one of four paintings I created in an effort to experiment with different art supplies, linework styles, and painting technique.

I found this to be a “breakthrough” piece for me; I have been looking to it as a kind of style guide ever since. I really enjoy loose, splashy watercolors and the added texture of colored pencils.

This painting and the rest in the series were featured in my first YouTube videos. They are a little rough around the edges, but you can view the process behind this painting here.

“Climb Out With Me”

Fanart of YouTube star Martina Stawski of EatYourSushi. In a video in early 2017 she opened up about her struggles with EDS and her related depression. In the video, she describes how positive experiences are like adding rungs to a ladder that she can use to climb out of the darkness on bad days. I was so touched and inspired I immediately had to draw this!

You can see in the process gif I initially drew her pretty generic but then I tried really hard to capture a good likeness of her while drawing in a more simplified, cartoony style. 

I used Photoshop and Kyle T. Webster digital brushes, as usual.

Editing this after I did some color touch up before printing for an art show.

I also included a process gif and a gif containing some of the preliminary sketches done for this series.

...you may notice in the process gif I almost gave her Garnet’s hair. LOL, so glad I realized before it was too late.

As you’ll notice, I just started doing these so I’m still experimenting with my approach to color, style, format, etc. But I’m improving way faster drawing these comics instead of pin-ups. ^_^

I’ve been using this as a way to experiment with style and technique. I’ll probably stop with these after the election, though I still plan to create comics discussing current topics like BLM. (But I have been making some dumb Pokemon Go comics if you’re into that, too.)

In memory of the Orlando shooting victims. Modified Great Seal of the United States. 49 stars for the victims of the Orlando shooting. Replaced the arrows of war with Florida's orange blossom, kept the olive branch of peace. Wings curled in protectively towards a rainbow-heart shield. We should all be United with those who represent the best of America—our diversity, our freedom.
