ATIA 2014 Orlando, the foremost learning and networking event for professionals, parents, and students in the field of Assistive Technology (AT). The biggest names and companies in AT will convene on January 29, 2014, to learn the latest cutting edge information, products, services and best practices in assistive technology for service professionals serving children, students and adults with disabilities.
This is a great resource guide that lays out the funding of AT. It helps lay out possible sources that will help pay for certain AT devices. As OTs, this will be helpful to us if we need to help a family find funding for their AT device!
Unit 4
This is the website for Variety which is a children’s charitable organization that helps provide assistive technology devices for kids. This is a good organization to become familiar with because they are located in Saint Louis. As OT’s it will be beneficial to utilize this organization for our clients who might not have access to funds to have AT devices or if their insurance doesn’t cover it.
Great find, Nadia! I agree that this is an extremely important resource for us, future OTs, to know. Especially, given that a decent number of us may remain in St. Louis in the future, being aware of Variety will enhance our abilities to be effective OTs for all of our clients.
This is a great resource for us as OTs because we will be able to guide our clients to this organization in case they are unable to fund the purchase of a device themselves. This website helps lay out all of the information and is very useful. Great find, Nadia!
Novi-based ITC Holdings is working with Paralyzed Veterans of America to get the wheelchairs to veterans and groups.
While following Zite, I came across this awesome organization. It helps allow Veterans who are paralyzed still participate in occupations such as fishing and hunting. If these are occupations these individuals enjoy then it can potentially help their quality of life. As occupational therapists we can help to advocate for programs to help Veterans like this one!
This video is about how a Starbucks in Florida utilizes video technology to help assist in communication between the workers and the customers who are deaf. This use of technology helps promote people who have a hearing impairment to use the drive thru, and experience the social engagement.
This is really cool Tara! This is something that could benefit so many people and help make them feel included. I think if there was something like this at every drive through it would be so beneficial!
This is awesome! People who are in wheelchairs cannot always enjoy things like swimming in an ocean or lake or even a pool. This wheelchair allows individuals who are in wheelchairs have experiences just like everyone else. The big wheels help to go through the sand and help the wheelchair float. It also has three different seating positions so that the individual is comfortable. As an occupational therapist, we can recommend something like this for individuals who want to engage in the occupations they want to engage in :)
Designer Hadeel Ayoub’s glove will soon incorporate multilingual translation and be able to send texts and emails.
I found this while following Zite and I must say it’s awesome! The designer of this glove has a niece that is nonverbal and this is where she got the idea from. You wear the glove and it will monitor hand motions and then translate it into text on a phone or computer. You can then turn on the text to speech software and have it translated that way. I think this is such a great device that this individual is inventing. If this develops more and becomes an easily accessible device in the future, I think occupational therapists could put this to very good use for individuals who are nonverbal. I would love to see this in action and I definitely want to see the progress of it!
Israel-based nonprofit Tikkun Olam Makers (TOM) brings together need knowers and expert makers to come up with real solutions for real people.
I found this awesome information on a workshop while following Zite. A nonprofit hosts a 72 hour workshop to build assistive technology devices for individuals who may have not found exactly what they need. There can be things that are built during this conference that may help individuals have alternative access to computers like different mouses or keyboards or making different adaptations to the typical ones. As an occupational therapist, this is an awesome thing to know about. These people may be able to help if you are having trouble with a client who needs assistive technology but you cannot figure out what exactly it is you need. This workshop seems like it would be very interesting to attend as an occupational therapist.
Unit 2
In class we spoke about accessibility features that can be found on our devices. I pulled up the page for accessibility features of Apple devices. I think it is important to familiarize ourselves with these features because it can enhance productivity when individuals use these devices. I like how this page is set up because it allows you to pick an accessibility feature based on what you need such as, vision, hearing, physical/motor skills, and learning/literacy. If a device is not compatible with the individual’s needs, it may just need some simple adjusts. We should be able to access these features and teach our clients how they can adjust them to improve their function. There are also sites for android and other devices that explains the use of accessibility features.
This is a really great reference for someone who is using an apple device or is thinking about purchasing one. Technology is advancing so fast, it is hard to keep up with all of the features of these devices. Even when you are aware that something is there, sometimes it’s hard to understand how to use them. This is a very detailed, organized website that explains accessibility features in a way that people can understand and follow. As Ots, we need to be aware of whats going on with certain devices so we can help our clients function at the highest level!
I think this a really great and simple resource for us as occupational therapists. Like Nadia said, a device could simply need one of these small adjustments in order to work with the client in a more efficient manner. We can reference this page if we have a client who still wants to use their phone or iPad to help adapt it to their ability while using features that are built into the phone!
Engineering students in India have designed a prototype device that translates sign langue into audio and text, allowing people with a varying disabilities interact with each other. This device was made so that even if you don’t know sign language you are able to communicate with those who use it. The article notes that there is a device called MotionSavvy which is described as being very similar to a tablet. The new prototype includes gloves with sensors and accelerometer attached to an lcd screen with audio. The sensors detect the way the fingers are being bent and the accelerometer detects the tilting and movement of hands. There is a stored database of gestures with pre-recorded audio that will speak and display the text of the signs on the screen. The article states that there isn’t a release date or price for the device. I think that a communication device like this would be a wonderful addition to the AT world. It provides so many opportunities to those who otherwise may be unable to interact certain people in their lives. I’m not sure if the lcd screen that displays text would be able to convert that information to a computer. But if so, this device would have the capabilities to complete a variety of computer related tasks.
What a neat article to find Allie! I would have never thought of this type of augmentative communication device but it is very practical. Many individuals in our world use sign language, and with this tool they could interact with others so much easier. It looks like it would be a type of direct selection that the motion sensors of the hands could translate the signs into both text on the screen as well as audio. It is really cool to see how much technology has improved over the years and what great opportunities it brings with it. Hopefully we can see this device in action within the next few years.
This is an awesome tool, Allie! I really think this a great tool and very useful for our society. It is very hard to understand someone who is communicating via sign language and this could really help that difficulty. The one downfall that might happen with this is that many people have different signs or their own versions of signs. This could affect the accuracy of the translation process. Overall, I think this is an awesome tool and would be very helpful in our world.

Unit 2:
This is a really cool video made by a guy who was born blind. He has an entire YouTube channel dedicated to showing the general public what blind people do. In this video he demonstrates an app called TapTapSee that allows a blind person to take a picture of an object, and the app will identify that object. In the video he has the app identify a $20 bill, a white Adidas ankle sock, and a can of Healthy Choice chicken noodle soup. Tommy said that he thinks the app is incredibly helpful for things like cooking and dressing, but it does take some practice to be the most successful. I am glad that he demonstrated that the app sometimes is inaccurate, like when he held the sock too close to the camera. It is important for us as therapists to know the positive AND negative aspects of the technology we are suggesting to our clients. This video was made in 2013, so the app may have made vast improvements and work even better. I was also happy that he demonstrated how he uses the voiceover feature to use his iPhone. It was interesting to play with it ourselves but I thought it was very beneficial to see someone use it who is actually visually impaired. Check out some more of his videos, like “Do Blind People Believe in Ghosts?” - he’s a funny guy!
This is a really cool find, Emma! I think this app is awesome and I agree that knowing the positive and negative aspects of the technology is very important to us as therapists. I also agree that it was very helpful for him to show us how this app works. I think this could be a great tool to use as a future occupational therapist!
This is such a simple fix to a big problem that can occur. You just take a plastic ring and glue it on the mouse to help have control. It is very inexpensive to do this and can help tremendously if used with the right client. As an occupational therapist, this is a good tool to keep in mind especially when working with children. It can help make children not feel different from their peers because of the size and it doesn’t stick out as much as other alternative forms of mice.
I was playing a video game on my PC and found that my poor little fingers were getting sore from pressing the WASD keys. Since I am playing this game a lot perhaps I could find a way to ease the pain by using a joystick or gamepad. I already have a couple of old gamepads lying around that won't work due to compatibility issues so I was reluctant to buy a new one. So I made a little joystick that can be placed on the keyboard. It is light weight and portable, no cables to plug in and there is no need to download any drivers. Just set it on your keyboard and it is ready to go. Bonus: I created a 3d model of the joystick. See step 5 below!
Woah! Never would have guessed you could make something like this! This can easily be adapted into a joystick for a mouse. If you go into the settings on the computer and turn on the setting which allows for mousing by the keyboard, this would be a great alternative. It seems fairly easy and cheap to make and it would be a great tool to use for an individual who cannot use a typical mouse. As an occupational therapist, this can be a great tool to use for an individual. It could be a good “tester” tool in order to determine if a nicer version of something like this could work for the client.
Buy the Maltron One-Handed Keyboard from EnableMart.com. Maltron keyboards have been shown to relieve the symptoms of RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) in hundreds of cases and have also enabled RSI sufferers to resume their careers.
This is a really cool keyboard that I have not seen before. It can be used for people who are only able to use one hand. They have left and right handed versions of this keyboard. The design can help speed up the process of typing by allowing for word-processing input speeds of 85 words per minute. As an occupational therapist, this keyboard is good to keep in mind for individuals to possibly use. The one fallback of this keyboard is the price. It costs $515 for the keyboard. If this will benefit the client, it may be worth it, but there may be other options that need to be considered prior to this one.
Late last year we reported on a novel new technology for enhancing television and other video signals to improve viewing experience of color blind people.
I found this new technology while following Zite. I think this will be a great tool for individuals who are color blind. The simulation this provides really helps you see what it does for the individual. I think this would be helpful in occupational therapy practice because it will allow people who are color blind and have trouble on the computer, be able to use the computer easier and more accurately.
Excited and happy, Yogo was like all the other dogs, playing and running around, save for one thing: his customized 3D printed prosthetic leg. Yogo, only a year old, suffers from a congenital atrophy in his right front leg and before being fitted for a leg prosthetic was unable to walk properly.
I was following Zite and I found this very interesting article! Although it is a dog that is obtaining the assistive technology, I thought I would still share it with everyone. It really is awesome how technology is advancing and the fact that there can be a prosthetic made for a dog is absolutely amazing. Technology is advancing so fast and I think it is great for us a future occupational therapists. If a prosthetic made for a dog can be made from a 3D printer, think of all the other assistive technology devices that can be made for our patients!
This blog on how to make an adapted crayon for a child with cerebral palsy is very cool! It is a simple fix to a common problem. You mold a “Y” shape around the crayon with clay to help the child with the dysfunctional grasp be able to still color with their classmates. This would be a helpful tool in occupational therapy practice because it is a simple and cheap fix. The child will feel included with the rest of the peers because they are now able to color with less trouble than before.
