Both of laylas parents were absent in different ways. Her dad, physically, and her mom emotionally. She couldn't reach either when she really needed them, and she's afraid that the cycles are repeating. She has always been on top of herself, but through her mental health struggles, she had to confront how often she receded and pushed the people she loves away.

She doesn't want to be the wife, parent, or friend that is absent in their lives. It's important to her that she's present and there for people when they need her. It really rattles her when her and Jordan are off, to the point where she can't even see that they're still them. She sees all the flaws and areas that she doesn't fit because she needs to correct them and be perfect, but they still talk to each other about the big things and are still showing up for each other. They had a rocky start, and layla does not handle being blindsided well, so she needs to make sure she is not blindsided by herself.

She leaves her dad on read because it's easier to avoid him than confront what still bothers her. She's had a few moments where she's been able to tell him how she felt and rely on him, but she'll never fully trust him or want to turn to him after everything that happened in her childhood. She didn't realize how much she really needed him and needed the advice and reassurance from him until she got it.

Layla wants to be a mother. Her best friend is getting ready to become one, and she is so focused on her career that she's already wondering if she'll ever be ready for that. She uses her career to hide emotionally, and she wants to do better. She wants the big career, but she also wants her family, and she needs to figure out how she's going to balance them both without disappearing-- emotionally or physically.
