  Hortense Ellis (18 April 1941 – 19 October 2000)

Like most jamaicans artists Hortens started Her career performing on Young talents contests. She was 18 years at that time it was for Her great opportunity to show her ocal skills. In 1964 she was awarded silver cup as Jamaican Best Female Vocalist.

During 1960’s Hortense begun to recorded songs for such producents as Ken Lack, Coxsone Dodd and Duke Reid and toured jamaica with Byron Lee band the Dragonaires.

Due to the fact that she was sister of Alton Ellis Coxsone Dodd persuaded her to record female versions of Alton hits. Alton and Hortense also recorded some songs for Dodd as a duo: ‘I’m in Love’ , Easy Squeeze’.

In 1970 Ellis married Mikey Saunders with whom she had five children, becouse of her due to motherhood she wan’s so active on stage but she still work busy in studio. As Mahalia Saunders she
