gifs: Tips & Tricks

Alright here are a few pointers, suggestions, tips and tricks, and notes regarding the things I do with my gifs. They may differ than how others may others but that’s really the beauty of it all. I’m just jotting all this down with the assumption you’re using photoshop and have a grasp on how to use it. It’s more or less for those who are just starting in the field and don’t know how to achieve a “cinematic” look.

Dimensions

Be mindful of tumblr’s media dimensions. Always make sure your image is exactly 540px in width (or 268px if you want two separate images side-by-side). Any more or less and tumblr will resize your image and stretch it out which will lead to a loss in quality.

Post-Processing 

Get ready to meet your two best friends: sharpen and gaussian blur. 

Many creators do a lot of post-processing with their captured footage and gifs (color adjustments, filters, etc). One essential technique I’ve found is smart sharpening your clip. Examples below:
