If c!Tommy were to be in a Hogwarts House, which one would he be?
I say he’s a Hufflepuff even though he’s an ass sometimes. The reason why is because he’s loyal and hard-working. (Or, at least I think so)
What do you think? And give an explanation! It’d be fun
OKAY SO
He is a Hufflepuff. I don’t accept any other opinion on that honestly. I can debate each other character or ccs themselves, but not c!Tommy, he is ✨Hufflepuff✨.
To understand why, we need to look through what makes Tommy suitable for other houses and why they are not right anyway.
We’ll start with Ravenclaw: c!Tommy is many things. He is smart, people don’t often give him credit for it, because it’s not usual book-smartness. But he is emotionally smart and he is great at adapting to situations and understanding them quickly. He is a tactical smart, not strategic. But it’s still smartness, and he is also quick-witted and has a good sense of humor. He is creative in a weird way, I mean, building an IPhone 5 when he was exiled? How can you even come up with that. Those are all Ravenclaw traits, and I believe people understimate that he could’ve get to this House, if he wanted to.
But as well as other houses, you can’t just conclude that someone is Ravenclaw because they are smart and funny. I mean, it’s an old debate about the whole sorting thing, that book makes it seem like you can’t be, for example, brave AND smart at the same time. Which is so fucking weird, look at Hermione, Ron, Fred and George, Luna and others.
So what’s in the core of Ravenclaw that makes it not the first choice for c!Tommy?
The thing, Ravenclaw is about gaining knowledge just because. Amd by knowledge I mean not only book knowledge, but anything that a ravenclaw student is interested in. It’s about collecting those knowledge and using it only to accumulate more knowledge and create something. Which is why this is the house of scientist and inventors. They are just interested in the subject, they are not particularly interested into using it to gain something else. Like status or money. Those are complementary, and though ravenclaws still have a lot of pride in them, it’s not ambitious pride as it’s more of a feeling of some sense of superiority.
Nothing from what I said about the core of Ravenclaw is about c!Tommy. He’s never been the one to accumulate knowledge about anything nor seemed to be interested in inventing something just to invent. Practically everything he came up with was either in self-defense in a way or to scam people *cough* Tubbo’s bath water *cough*.
Conclusion: Tommy is not Ravenclaw. I would argue that the most prominent Ravenclaws on the server are Techno and somewhat Ranboo. But as I said before, I don’t have a super storng opinion on everyone else, open to a debate.
Next Slytherin: I will say a weird thing here, but in my opinion c!Tommy is as close to being Slytherin as to be Gryffindor (which is probably people’s first choice as his house).
We are going from another dise this time. Tommy actually somewhat fits Slytherin’s core. Well, part of it. Slytherin is about power. But Power doesn’t need to be in the literal sense of the word. It can be power over yourself, over your fate, over how people percieve you. It’s basically about control over something, which is not as bad as it sounds. Slytherin gets a lot of shit for being evil, but it’s about ambition, you don’t need to be malicious to be ambitious.
And Tommy needs this control. Over his life, over his loved ones (not to control them, but to keep in check that they are still there). He craves it, more than ever as we see in the last lore, where he results to killing Dream, because he can’t keep feeling powerless and scared anymore.
But is it what he needs the most? In the moment, yes. But if we strip him from all the trauma and danger, it wouldn’t be his main concern. In fact Tommy is very open to hand over the power he has to overs and just follow people.
In conclusion, he is not Slytherin. Though half of the server is, I swear, 50% of the characters are slytherins. Wilbur, Tubbo, Punz, Dream, Quackity etc.
Mext we have Gryffindor: the main contender to be c!Tommy’s house. To be fair, from the hp aus with Tommy I’ve seen, he wasn’t in Gryffindor… once, I think. It seems like people see his red theme and hear loud voice and just immediately think ‘oh yeah, another Weasley, I know what to do with you’.
And I mean. It’s not necessarily wrong. Tommy is brave, he is brush and active. He loves doing stuff just for fun like pranking and annoying people. He is also an attention-seeker in the base of his character (which makes the whole invisibility potions plot even more tragic). And Gryffindors are the biggest attention seekers out of the houses. Even their symbolic – red and gold – are the colour and the metal that gain the most eyes on them.
Gryffindor at its core is also about protection. And about taking the risks to make something better. The justice fighters, the loyal dogs to something they care about. Shining stars of the society. Which is very cool! I mean, the whole original story is based almost completely on Gryffindors. We know them better than any other House.
They arw Heroes. And that’s where we are drawing the line between Tommy and Gryffindor.
He is not a Hero. He’s never wanted to be, not even at the start, when he was traumaless. He liked being a center of attention, but not in a way to be known as someone impressive, but to have all the people he cares about close to him and have their approval (aka anything he was doing when they just started L’Manberg. Even when Wilbur shushed him away and Tommy tried to get back bu saving Tubbo and be the hero it wasn’t exactly to be heroic, it was to get his brother’s approval back and be a part of what he is doing).
It’s important for Gryffindors to shine. They are also the ones to be working for The Greater Good whatever it is in their opinion. c!Tommy is not about The Greater Good. More, he even talked about how good and bad are subjective things. There’s no ultimate goodness or badness, Tommy is not a person of extremes like that. He doesn’t even make people friends or enemies because of what side of the conflict they are on, like it may seem. He only claims person an enemy or a friend judging by their actions towards him and what he loves. This is not a Gryffindor behavior.
Conclusion: c!Tommy may be Huffendor, but definitely not Gryffindor. Honestly from the server most prominent Gryffindors are Sam, Sapnap, Bad. All of them in their own ways.
And now we finally have reached Hufflepuff.
Over the years of me being head in the Harry Potter fandom, I noticed that people don’t tend to understand this House. Which is fair, in canon we are least familiar with it. The only noticeable Hufflepuff character is Tonks (who, by the way, Tommy very much reminds me of).
Amd it suits that House very well. Let’s look at the colours symbolism. Or more specifically, the secondary colours of the houses. Ravenclaw has bronze, Slytherin has silver, Gryffindor has gold. All of those are metals, shiny, prideful, catching the attention. And then you have Hufflepuff with just black. The least eye-catching colour. The most solid colour. It really explains a lot.
I am not saying that Hufflepuffs don’t like attention. Many of them do, of course, we are all people. It’s about which sort of attention they need. It’s about being heroic or famous or respectable, and hufflepuffs don’t really go for any of that. It’s something they can welcome, but not their prioritie ultimately.
There’s this interview with JKR (and I don’t respect her as a person, but I do respect her as a creator of this world, so I will take her words about it to attention) where she said that in the Battle of Hogwarts the house to stay, all of them, who are old enough, to fight is, in fact, not Gryffindor, but Hufflepuff. All of them has stayed. And not because they wanted to be heroic or seen some sort of The Greater Good it in it, it was just a right thing to do. And no matter what, it’s what leads them in life. To do the right thing, the kind thing just because.
And we can see Tommy doing just the same throughout his whole story. He follows Wilbur, because he loves Wilbur, and for him it’s right to fight next to him. He doesn’t want to be the bad guy, not because of The Good™️ or some moral high ground, but just because it’s not right to cause pain and to destroy maliciously what people love (which is why the whole exile arc was really his bottom rock. especially teaming up with Techno, it was never a right decision for Tommy, because it was a betrayal of everyohe is). He stopped as soon as he came to realization of what he is doing, he saw himself as ‘worse than everyone I didn’t want to be’ and he stopped and sided with Tubbo and L’Manberg, because no matter how painful it was to betray Techno, it was a right thing to do. At least for him, rightness is subjective. But his is about kindness.
And it’s what ultimately makes Tommy Hufflepuff. Kindness.
Not to say that other houses can’t be kind. Everyone can. But it’s not what leads them in life. Just being kind.
(And I want to emphasize that kindness doesn’t equal being polite and nice. You can be rough and joke on people but be kind at the same time. It’s about the intent, and Tommy has never intended to actually hurt anyone).
Every time Tommy snapped from that, he deeply regreted it afterwards. I mean, the guy is afraid that killing the man like c!Dream is wrong, because killing is wrong, no matter how for The Greater Good it is. And I truly believe that c!Tommy in stable memtal state, not feeling like he is in the corner and powerless, would never take this step. It really is the last resort for him.
There’s also a lot of small things that make him Hufflepuff. His love for plants and animals, his love for simple, not fancy things, the way, as someone wrote in the fanfic (I am sad I can’t remember where I actually read it), he ‘always follows his heart. But his heart follows people he loves’.
Conclusion:
c!Tommy is one of the rare category of protagonists, who are Hufflepuff. Usually it’s the role that reserved for the Best Friend of the main character. The one, who can help that main character to fight for the right, when there’s temptations on the way or no hope left. Those best friends also usually die in the stories. They are a perfect sacrifice to give the story more weight and stakes. Rue from Hunger Games, Newt from The Maze Runner. Heck, Cedric Diggory from the Harry Potter.
c!Tommy has the Gryffindor energy. But he is completely and utterly Hufflepuff.
