Victoria Redemption Arc

It’s what she deserved

When Laurent leaves to join the Denali coven, they offer an invitation to Victoria as well. She rejects it. While grateful for the offer, she knows it was only made to be kind to Laurent. She doesn’t want to take anyone’s pity, and either way, she feels she won’t fit in well with them.

She attempts the vegetarian lifestyle, at Laurent’s encouragement. It’s a struggle at first. She slips up a few times. But the nagging feeling of guilt she always felt in the back of her head slowly starts to dissipate, and every denied temptation is made worth it.

She turned Riley on an impulse. Something about his blonde hair and high cheekbones reminded her of James. But he was younger, with softer eyes and a smile that was kind. Gentle, even.

She regrets it the moment she bit him. She hides out in an abandoned warehouse outside the town she found him in, watching over his spasming, twitching, screaming body. The guilt that had been slowly fading returns full force. He wakes up to a beautiful woman standing over him with a dead cat in her arms.

There is no romance between them. She mothers him incessantly. He is so young and nervous. He panics easily, and for the first month anxiety attacks caused by the slightest of sudden movements are what fill the days.

Slowly, he starts to calm down. The residual anxiety never fades. Victoria can relate. She is always nervous, paranoid. She has been her entire existence. She forces a brave face on, however, for him.

After three months, Riley disappears. He is gone for a week, in which Victoria nearly goes insane. He returns, crying and rambling about he had had fed on a human. He was terrified of what Victoria would say, couldn’t stand the idea of her being disappointed in him, so he ran.

This is when she sits him down, delves a bit into her past. She lets him know it’s okay. That even the best of their kind had slipped at some point.

After nearly a year, they find Diego.

Like in the story, he had gone to find the gang members that had been attempting to induct his younger brother, but they had come too late. He had been beaten badly, a gunshot wound in his stomach. Victoria changes him, unable to watch a child die.

They take him to the woods and watch him as he changes. Diego wakes to a beautiful woman standing over him, holding a dead deer.

Riley almost went insane with jealousy, because suddenly he wasn’t the only child anymore.

It lasted for a month. Then after Victoria sent them on a hunt alone together and they came back best friends. She didn’t bother to question it. She was just glad that it happened.

It was only months later that they found Fred. He had driven his car off an empty bridge at night. He was trying to avoid a dog. Victoria had jumped right into the water and pulled him out. His lungs were full of water and his head was split open from his head hitting the windshield so hard he nearly went through it. The idiot, for as smart as he was, hadn’t been wearing a seat belt. She turned him. He awoke to a beautiful woman standing over him with a dead dog in her hands, muttering a joke about poetic justice.

Diego and Riley were against Fred, now both of them jealous that they had to share their mom. His power of repelling people, which he struggled to control, only intensified their dislike. His quiet, logical personality didn’t help either. Victoria hoped that they would eventually get over it.

She couldn’t help Fred control his abilities, no matter how much they practiced. It was affecting their coven as a whole. The more the practiced, the stronger his power of repelling grew. The stronger it got, the less control he had over it. The boys couldn’t bear to be in the same room as him anymore. She spent more time with him, forced herself to despite how disgusted she felt by the mere thought of it. Part of it was to practice. The other part to make sure he didn’t feel lonely. This only intensified Diego and Riley’s jealousy.

Victoria tried to think of who could help, but only came to two conclusions. Both of them were impossible, but if she had to pick an impossible task, she’d pick Carlisle over the Volturi any day. They’d probably just try to take Fred for their own.

So they began to travel to Forks, Victoria just praying the Cullens were still there. She had no idea if they’d be willing to help. She could only hope that Carlisle’s famed kindness would be enough to overlook her past wrongdoings against them.

On their way to Forks, they came across Bree. They found her in alley, eating out of the trash. Victoria’s heart nearly broke at the sight. She went up to the small, young girl, and asked if she wanted a different life. One where she had a family, and didn’t have to eat garbage. She asked if she’d be willing to suffer for it. To undergo immense pain. After hesitating, Bree said yes. She was desperate.

Victoria turned her out of pity. She knew what it was like to live on the run, on the streets. Plus, she had always wanted a girl.

When Bree awoke, Victoria held a dead bird in her hands.

Bree lifted the morale of the coven tenfold. She clung to Victoria’s side for a week, her shyness and confusion overpowering her. But before long she had become best friends with Fred. She preferred his quiet disposition to the rowdiness of Diego and Riley and for whatever reason his abilities had less of an affect on her. Diego was more willing to put up with Fred because of it, his crush on Bree obvious in every way. Riley less like a petulant child, a bit braver and more mature. He worked a little harder to push through his anxieties. He whispered to Victoria one night, while Diego and Fred had taken Bree out hunting, that Bree reminded him of his younger sister. He used to have to watch her all the time. Having that back in his life felt stabilizing.

They eventually made their way to Forks. Carlisle Cullen was leaving for work only to find Victoria and her coven in his driveway.

The first thing he noticed was her yellow eyes. The second thing he noticed was that she had four teenagers standing around her, one of their eyes just like hers, the other three with the bright red eyes of newborns. The third thing he noticed was how badly he wanted to stay away from one of them, which he found strange. He was the most unassuming out of all of them.

“I know I don’t deserve it, not after everything I’ve done, but I need your help. It’s not for me. It’s for him,” Victoria says, motioning the unassuming boy in question. She explains everything, about how Laurent has joined the Delani’s and she went vegetarian and how she turned Riley, then Diego, then Fred, then Bree, and how they were her children. All of them. And how Fred has this power he can’t control and she can’t help him. She needs someone to help him.

Carlisle invites them in as Victoria rambles on about apologies and thank you’s. He watches at how the two boys remain on the other side of the room from the third. The girl sat a only a bit closer. Victoria stands right beside him. He listens to how Victoria reminds them in a chiding voice about the human girl they had and how her scent would call out to them. The girl with them, clearly the youngest in both the human and vampire way, asked nervously if she should go sit out in the woods, in case she couldn’t help herself. He’s floored at how Victoria reassures her, comforts her. It’s all so familiar. He realizes with a start that she reminds him of Esme.

No one was happy about Victoria’s presence. Even Esme, who was instantaneously fond of the four teenagers Victoria had with her, argued against it. Still, Carlisle rented them a place nearby, still outside the town. It was just as big as the Cullen’s residence. He explains that they are leaving when fall comes, so they have to work quickly. They wanted to give Bella one last summer with her friends and Charlie before they turned her.  Every day him and Fred work on control, on reigning in his ability. Everyone else refused to help.

The first one to come around was Bella, surprisingly. She was curious to see the three teens in the various stages of being newborns. She wanted to see what was in store for her. Bree almost loses it when she smells Bella, but Victoria manages to hold her off and calm her down. Bella’s in shell shock, seeing the woman who tried to kill her, protect her. Victoria explains everything, about how she was just following James’ lead. She explained how it was like Stockholm syndrome. James had stalked her for so long it became easier just to give in. How him dying, though painful, ended up being a relief for both her and Laurent. She apologized sincerely, and she said that Laurent felt the same way. Bella pauses, but it only takes her all of sixty seconds to forgive her. She convinces Edward and Jasper to come out and help Fred.

Things really pick up then. Immense strides in progress is made, to the relief of everyone. Riley and Diego finally form a fully fledged friendship with Fred, and they all grow close to the Cullen kids. Rosalie is obsessed with Diego. He reminds her of what she always thought her son with Emmett would be like. A good natured goofball, just like his dad. Jasper and Bree have this bond no one saw coming, and soon Emmett joins in. Like Riley, Bree reminds him of his little sister. Alice couldn’t help but feel attached to Fred. He was so scared by his own overwhelming power when they first met, and it stirred up the vaguest of memories from a human life where she felt the same way. Edward takes one look at Riley’s anxious, panicked, emo ass and thinks “wow what an interesting and unique guy unlike anyone else I’ve ever met”. Esme, Carlisle, and Victoria bond over having weird immortal teens to take care of.

Victoria’s coven leave around the same time as the Cullens. They never strayed far away from each other. The two covens always remained only cities apart. They often went up to visit the Denali coven. Laurent is totally a vodka aunt, just tossing out gifts and embarrassing stories about their mom. Victoria, for the first time in her life, feels truly safe and happy. She finally had a family to call her own.
