Went in to uni to have a review. We were shown a better way of putting in the multi coloured background through after affects.

I was also given notes:

To work on my movement 

Add little movement to make it  look less robotic

Find a way to export so it keeps it image quality 

make the colour less rough

most of these will be fixed by using after affects

beth’s clip for the WIP so far. I love the way she poses her characters and the transition at the end is so fluid. I’m really exited to see all the parts together

Our idea pitch to the BBC Client

Animation inspiration. We were insoired by conversation animations like ‘The Ricky Gervais Show’ and ‘Game Grumps animated’ which are animations of conversations friends are having where the scenes they are discussing are given a visual story following the ‘narration.’

After the pitch our client liked our idea and liked how it was more specific to the other ideas, as well as the way we are presenting the characters. However they were concerned about how these scenes would play out and wanted more description on how specifically the animation would look to the scenes as she wanted something more illustrated and less characters based. We explained that we wanted to involve morphing animation from characters to illustrations but we would be happy to tweak our idea and make it more of ‘morphing images’ than something character based. We will take these suggestions and go back to look at what we can change to create something more ideal for the client.

What is "Genderqueer"?

Due to having personal experience with the label ‘genderqueer’ and knowing various people who also identify this way I haven’t necessarily had to research into how to express this through an animation thoroughly although I find it’s always good to remind myself of what it means in order to bring that across in the animated clip.

adele linked to a post on tumblr which describes what gender queer and the spectrum of gender is. This was important for us learn going into this project. 

I have no personal experience with gender queer but I am empathetic and am willing to learn more about the experiences which people go through.

I wanted to do these people justice and show their perspective in a respectful and efficient way. To that I needed to educate myself

Art Style inspirations

We were firstly inspired by some humorous self-insert comics I found by and artist who mainly represents people as blank figures with simple but expressive faces. From this we felt that we should represent the two people in the audio as gender ambiguous forms. The first two images are clips taken from the comic and the second two images are ‘draw the squad’ bases. An exercise template of figures interacting for people to take and draw their own characters on top, which also have this blank, ambiguously-gendered style of characters.

When thinking about how to colour these characters, we thought “How about purple?” since it’s neither blue(male) or red(female), it’s like a mixture. But then we took it a step further and thought. The next few images are by a artist called Humon who has made a set of books called ‘animal lives’. They are pages of animal mating descriptions with a small illustrationg of these animals being represented as male and female human forms, this was another inspiration also. 

We then thought, well gender fluidity isn’t about being both genders, it’s about gender not mattering or existing. So we thought that having the characters multicoloured, a mixture of rainbow colours, would represent this idea of gender-fluidity better. We looked at the pixar short film ‘Night and Day’ which has two characters representing night and day time interacting with one another. Their bodies are human-like character forms and their ‘colouring’ on the inside of their lines are a background of scenery either in the day or at night. For our colouring, we will have a coloured, rainbow background, behind a black background and the images will be erased from the black background, having anything being animated coloured at the rainbow background underneath.

Beth put together some inspiration for our art style.

I really liked having people who had no proper gender represented through the way they’re drawn so we looked allot at the ‘draw the squad’ meme which is around tumblr.  

We also looked at the style of ‘night and day’ by Disney/Pixar for the way the background show through the characters. We wanted to show a spectrum of colours of our character because colour association with gender doesnt work when talking about gender queer people.

Although when this was made I had only just started making my part of the WIP. But it was good to see everyone else working and it really inspired me to work on my and finish it with loads of time for feed back and work on

The finished part. I went and coloured it in the way we planned. We chose the multi coloured back ground when it came to the character because colours are associated with genders but these people are gender neutral and there for there is no colour and at the same time every colour.

this is the first version of the video which I have made. it is very basic still and some parts are under development

I found this very hard to make so far as I didn’t draw enough on the story board to fill the time, So I am drawing up a new storyboard and proceeding to make it.

I was told in a feed back session that I needed to add allot more to show that would be going on and make it more apparent at what point in the audio things would be happening.

Grace and Emmy - No Box to Tick, The Listening Project - BBC Radio 4

Filling in forms can be a trial when the male and female boxes are both non-applicable.

this is the audio which myself and my group chose. We thought this was the most appropriate as there was another audio clip that covered the same topic but was very serious and hit home with us a bit too much. In the way that we dont think we could have done it in a proper manner and do it justice.

In the end we chose this one because I liked the way the people in the clip spoke about their topic. We liked that is was jovial and fun but about a subject that we care about very deeply
