anyone know any armys running any fundraising projects in support of charities/NGOs that help DV victims rn? i want to look into charities/NGOs specifically in Toronto and see if we can organize a big donation in armys' name.
@bangtanagan added this in the tags! Thank you for the hint!
I've hit up the research engines too, to see what organisations come up and will look into them to see if they're solid and will share my findings.
I am not around on social media apart from Tumblr so I'm currently not aware of any additional collective donation drives in light of this event.
I did however collect a few ideas on how ARMY could donate or how to search for donation options:
- women's shelters/shelters for victims of domestic violence in your area or that you know of (do check individual donation requirements and if possible check if they're inclusive meaning trans women and queer women are included in their protection)
- research for charities that have a specific focus and/or might be a smaller organisation. Those could for instance be for trans women, women refugees, women from marginalised communities, single parent victims of domestic violence etc. Donations often can go a long way with those smaller organisations.
That being said, any donation is of course amazing, meaning also the ones that are directed towards bigger organisations.
- searching for terms such as 'list charities domestic violence [country/region]' is likely to yield multiple search results that you can bounce off of if you want a general foundation to start with. Such examples are e.g. Women's Aid UK or Domestic Abuse Help Canada or Bundesverband der Frauenberatungsstellen und Frauennotrufe
Again, do make sure the charities are not for instance trans-exclusive before considering a donation.
- if a financial donation is potentially not possible for you or you wish to donate through other means, look for local charities or organisations near you that accept for instance clothing or sanitary items. Always, always check back with them either on their website or directly what they need, don't just bring them things without checking please.
You can also check if you can donate your time somehow. While this is of course a oftentimes longer term commitment, it is just as impactful. This depends on the charity/organisation you reach out to but could for instance be helping with their social media, doing graphics or writing texts, helping with donations or on the ground at charity events. The possibilities are diverse
And lastly (for now), you can use this as an opportunity to further educate yourself on how to be an Ally to victims of domestic and sexual violence. There are many reliable resources that give pointers and orientation on what to do. Examples for resources on this are Office for Prevention of Domestic Violence NY, Women's Aid Guide , Wikipedia article on domestic violence (available in various languages) or in movements such as Ni Una Menos.
Refresh your knowledge about the Signal for Help (hand sign that signals a need for help and alert for a situation of threat) and get reacquainted with potential signs of domestic violence and the types of domestic abuse.
If you personally want seek help for domestic violence, first and foremost, I hear you and I stand by you.
There's many places to get help and spaces to reach out to, depending on your situation and where you are. A place to start could be Find a Helpline which gives you a search function for helplines around the world in different countries to which you can reach out for help. Many of these helplines have non-phonecall options as far as i can tell, in case using a telephone is not an option to you.
Please everyone feel free to add onto this!
I am keeping you close to my heart and I am holding your hand.
