(Like two weeks ago now it's taken me so long to blog this..)
And I actually quite enjoyed it. Funny thing was before looking up the cinema listings I had no idea this film was out, had been made or was in the process of being made. I get all my TV from YouTube nowadays and the trailer or any news about the film was never recommended to me.
I didn't think it was the most original thing in the world it had a lot of movie tropes like the macguffin that the hero needs find, the moment of despair, the modern hapless hero.
But there was a lot of stuff I did like. I was amazed at how close everybody looked to there toy/cartoon versions that was defiantly not a thing that was viable in any other past period of film making and I was watching it thinking that the world of cosplay has made this possible.
When I was watching it I was thinking how much attention they put in making a proper he-man film when I remembered that the last Mattel that I'd seen was the Barbie movie which I did not like and think was a good Barbie movie or a good movie in general. Had I put two and two together that this was Mattel movie after seeing Barbie I probably wouldn't have went to see it such was my dislike for the Barbie movie but I'm sure glad I did since I did like it.
I did think for a family it was a bit long at over two hours!! at one point there a big showdown battle I was watching it thinking was the end of the film only for there to be a whole other act left.
I really liked most of the actors, I thought the guy they got to play he-man was really good. I really really liked the actress they be Teela she was fantastic. Evil-Lyn was great but didn't have a lot of screen time which I was a bit sad about since she's my favorite in motu. Idris elba was ok,...I'm not a fan and I didn't know he was in the film till he appeared but he was alright. Jared letto as Skeletor was good but much like Evil-Lyn not really a lot of screen time for a over two hour film. There was point in the film where I thought he was the "Overlord Of Evil" but he never said it and I was so gutted. I liked most of what they did with Skeletor but the rubber muscle suit was just shit and one of the things in the film that I thought just didn't work.
I think most of the problems I had with it where just modern film problems. It did feel rather small like a lot of modern green screen films tend to. I would have personally would have loved a dark Conan the barbarian lore heavy he-man film but I know that's not marketable and I know that's what Mattel what so I fine with that.
Funny thing was that even though the film was over two hours I felt like I walked out before the end. There where apparently a whole load of post credit scenes but I felt rushed out of the cinema cause as soon as the credits rolled the cleaner came in with their cleaning supply's and stood right behide me and I felt like I had to leave which was not fun and might have be annoyed about it if I hadn't on a little bit of a high from enjoying the movie.
It has all the flaws of a modern film with to much green screen cgi and it's a bit long for younger folk But it felt like it was made with so much love fro classic MOTU and I think it was a good summer action film that a lot of younger folk that have seen in the cinema are going to have fond memory's of.
(And I had that four non blondes song stuck in my head for the rest of the day after see it.)
