This painting is an unfinished work — the hands are only sketched. The gentleman has been tentatively identified as Juan Mateos († 1643), the Royal Chief Master of the Hunt, author of a renowded treatise “on the origins and dignity of the hunt” (Origen y Dignidad de la Caza, Madrid, 1634).
