How do you stay motivated to keep making costumes? I need a costume in January and started it but I'm already stuck and things about it are bothering me.
If I start to drag on a cosplay, I go back and rewatch the movie, game, or show it’s from. That’s usually enough to remind me why I love the character so much that I wanna be them and I come out of it being HYPED again.
If a specific part of a cosplay is frustrating me, I’ll switch gears and go work on a different part of it for a while instead. It keeps me from laser focusing my panic onto one piece, keeps me productive, and I always have a clearer head when I then go back to work on the frustrating piece.
And I look at my favorite cosplayers’ work on Instagram! Seeing other people’s builds always brings back my love for the hobby because of how cool it is that there’s thousands of creative nerds all over the world building ridiculous costumes just because they love characters so much!
The Pacific Rim soundtrack is also amazing for pushing through work.
There’s also no shame in mistakes or remaking things if you’re not happy with them. I know it’s not a good feeling, but messing up means you’re actively learning and improving. If I’m repeatedly getting stuck or making mistakes, I’ll go back and look at other methods I could be using, study where I’m going wrong, or talk to other cosplayers for advice. Deliberately changing my thinking from “oh shit, I’m fucking up” to “it’s ok, I’m learning” helps me a lot.
Also also, for me a big part of getting through motivation slumps is recognizing whether I’m momentarily frustrated or if I’m full on burnt out. Cosplay burn out is real and sometimes you hit a point where you need a break. If you’re hitting burn out point where you feel like you’re suffering more than you’re having fun, it’s ok to walk away for a few days, weeks, or months. Sometimes you just need to recharge your creative batteries by taking a breather.

How to Wear a Short Wig If You Have Long, Thick Hair
Okay, so I’m a long-haired cosplayer, and I get a lot of questions about how I fit my hair into the short wigs that I wear. It’s actually really easy! And the technique also works for long wigs. You’ll need:
A wig cap, a hair tie, long thick hair, and a wig.
STEP 1: Tie your hair into a really low ponytail. Get the hair tie as close to your head as possible (i.e. as tight as possible) without it being too uncomfortable. Then, take the end of the ponytail and pull it up over your head, like in the picture below.
STEP 2: Now take your wig cap and stretch it over the base of your ponytail (you’ll have to lean over a bit to make sure the ponytail doesn’t slide off your head). Using the base of the ponytail as an anchor, pull the cap up & all the way over your head, stretching it until the mesh is over your whole face.
STEP 3: Slide the front of the cap up until it’s about at your hairline (like you normally would do it). Stick your fingers under the cap to shove any stray ponytail-hairs back up into the cap.
STEP 4: Your ponytail will still be kind of lumpy under the cap. Massage it & try to evenly distribute the hair throughout the cap, so there are no major bulges. Dear god I look like a tool.
STEP 5: Now you’re ready to put the wig on! Do this as you normally would (turn it upside-down, put your forehead in first, all that cheese). But you’ll notice that the back of the wig (the part that goes over the nape of your neck) has a flap, like in the picture below. When you pull on your wig, pull this flap over the base of your ponytail (which should still be a nub you can feel). This will help further secure the wig onto your head. After this, adjust the wig, tugging down the front and sides, etc. Make sure as little of your natural hair as possible is visible.
And you’re done! Granted, the final result will probably vary depending on how long your hair is, how small the wig is, etc. This wig is one of those bobs you get when you buy a pigtail wig, so it’s a bit bigger than your average wig. However, I also tried this technique with a smaller bob (shorter hair, smaller cap; one of those ones that says “should fit most head sizes.”) and it still worked quite nicely. Here are pics of both:
Thanks for reading my tutorial! Happy wig-wearing!
