Live reactions to a potential rewatch of Shadowhunters.

I have seen Season 1 and 2 fully, but I wasn't strong enough to see season 3 fully. That may change. Though I do love myself so it's not sure.

Not even try to talk to me about the books. I read them (like one sentence out of 20) back in 2018 and it almost killed me. I begged someone to buy them back from me at a third of the price I paid, sneaked The Bane Chronicles in the package, and tried to forget. It was that or burning them. The only good thing in them was Simon.

The worst part about the show, hands down, is that everything happens at the same fucking time ! A whole season is crammed in three days and fucking deal with it I guess. Writers shot themselves in the foot because then they have to make flashbacks happen when there was no time for any of that to happen ! And trying to write ff based off the og timeline is a fucking nightmare ! You want to rewrite the malec scene where they have cocktails but oh beware cuz that's the night Luke got dragged there and bled on the couch. And Clary and him are having the Circle TalkTM in the next room. You want them to hook up ? Think again because Clary is LITERALLY a door down and there's no way she wouldn't have said anything if she saw Alec SLEEPING ON THE COUCH. They just fell asleep on the same couch ? Yeah what if Clary went out just a minute to get a snack or a glass of water ?!? She wouldn't have shut up about Alec being an hypocrite and would have outed him for just fucking sleeping and Aleg knew it SO HE WOULD HAVE NEVER JUST FELL ASLEEP RIGHT NEXT TO THE RED HAIRED TERROR. But they needed to fit a malec flashback in that WHOLE ASS MESS and nobody really cares that if you follow it right Alec woke up before Clary who I guessed slept in the red room (you go Mags this is top notch design for the bigoted ex circle member you got guilted into healing for free) and left AND THEN Clary called Jace and Izzy AND NOT ALEC back at Magnus' to have a secret meeting and Magnus who just spent the night with Alec (not snuggling) just went along with it ?

And sometimes it's 'ok can I realistically make all these things happen in a two hour window to keep with the og timeline' but sometimes it's 'how am I supposed to do ANYTHING with that steaming pile of shit ?!?!'

Thinking of the Characterization of Alec Lightwood

I think one of the reasons why I have such a personal attachment to Alec Lightwood as a character is due to how drastically different his internal conflict is to many other queer characters in media.

Many times when we see a closeted queer character dealing with internalized homophobia, there is an underlying sense of denial and lack acceptance of their sexuality. Forcing themselves into heterosexual relationships, outward denial / lashing out on any implications, etc etc.

And don’t get me wrong this is a very real issue and important topic.

But at least for me, having grown up in the church and so closed off from the secular world to a point that I didn’t even realize that being gay was a thing until middle school. That my feelings had a term, a definition other than difference. Seeing Alec was like a breath of fresh air. Because for me, when I realized that I was queer, I accepted it. “So be it” I thought. It wasn’t so much that I thought of it as wrong or felt immediate hatred or disgust towards myself. I rather felt anger and frustration towards my circumstances. Because from then on I would always be perceived as wrong, chastised for wanting something else. And if I had stayed, I would have ultimately had to give up the one thing I wanted. I couldn’t have both, they made that very clear, and that made me a deeply hateful and frustrated individual who felt trapped in my circumstances. Because no matter how “perfect” I would try to be in their eyes, if they ever knew I had a crack in me, a “flaw”, everything would crumble, I would always have to be on my guard.

And in similar ways, this is how I recognized Alec’s own internal conflict and characterization.

His conflict was not so much enveloped in the acceptance of his sexuality but rather finding acceptance in it. He knew he was gay, that wasn’t a question for him, he understood what contributed to his feelings and rather than deny them and force himself to partake in heterosexual relationships, he simply withdrew. Because he always “knew he couldn’t have what he wanted”. His anger towards himself and his sexuality was due to its integral permeances to who he was and frustration of the fact that it would inevitably lead to a much more complicated life because of the world and position he was born into.

His internalized homophobia was not denial but rather a frustrated acceptance and hatred unto himself for being born “wrong” and what that would ultimately mean to his safety, his siblings safety, and how he could maneuver through a very militaristic society that took different as broken.

When Magnus and Lydia came along, his outlash towards Magnus was that he was finally met with the very thing he feared. Someone he desired. Something he knew he could not indulge in. For Lydia, it was, to him, the most ideal of circumstances because he wouldn’t have to marry on the promise of false love. It was an agreement, a partnership, a business deal, nothing more nothing less. To him, he could finally do away probable growing rumors from Idris and other Nephilim who saw a perfectly suitable bachelor in his prime refuse to settle down and avoiding any and all romantic pursuits. To him he could have a job that he could throw himself into to ignore his loneliness at the end of the day. Because from the moment he realized he was gay he had to drill it into himself that it was not a possibility and from that bore a slow brewing hatred of it.

Choosing Magnus was exactly that. Choice. He did not love him, not yet, but for the first time, though terrifying as it was, he chose to step out of his circumstances and dangerous world because for one reason or another, he trusted that at the end of the day he would have his siblings, and even if it was for just a small period of time, he would have Magnus who would help guide him. 

And like many of us who make that terrifying and difficult choice to leave the church, knowing what it may do, who we may never see again, sometimes all we need is this. A person / people we love and who love us, and someone we trust to be there for us while we steady onto new, foreign, and free ground.

Oh Alec Lightwood how I will always adore how deep of a character you are.

The age thing is funny, because I feel sometimes it's not so much that Clare wants to ignore the fact that they're main characters are teenagers, but put them above other characters who are teenagers. Sort of a "I'm not like other kids". So not only are they inexplicably more skilled than other children, they're to be held to a different standard. The younger Blackthorn siblings are all treated like you would expect children during a war to be treated. I so don't blame anyone at the end of Queen of Air and Darkness for saying, "You know, actually, no children allowed during the coup." The narrative clearly understands to some extent that a fifteen year old is not on the cognitive level as a 25 year old.

That doesn't happen with the main characters. Sure, the narrative will bring up the fact that they're young to excuse bad behaviour (Jace), or pile on the angst (Julian). But the second you suggest that they shouldn't be on the front line of a war or are maybe wrong about something? The audacity. How dare you. The way that Julian and Jace get so offended whenever an adult who won't buy their bullshit is in the room is funny, but borderline cringe.

There's one throwaway line from City of Glass that I remember purely because of how much it still confuses me. It was when the Lightwoods are waiting for a portal, and Simon pulls Jace aside.

“I’ll be right back,” he said to Maryse, in the sort of voice Simon would never have used with his own mother. He sounded like an adult talking to another adult. Maryse indicated her permission with a distracted wave.

Like, what the fuck does this mean? It's such a weird thing to say. How is he an adult when he clearly needed permission to step away from the group? It's supposed to make him sound cool, but "I would never take that tone with my mother" is generally something you'd say when someone is being disrespectful. But he wasn't really, he just told her he'd step aside for a second. It's such an innocuous interaction.

That extra line from Simon just makes it so weird and confusing. Is it implying a new maturity, becuase no, right? Jace has never met an adult he has not crashed out in front of, either before this or after. It's not really reflective of Maryse and Jace's dynamic, which has always been a fairly standard, and their conflict seemed resolved. She scolds him about language, he and Isabelle both reference getting in trouble for messing up the rugs. He's just one of her kids. Maybe it's just clunky writing, or I'm looking too deep into it. But it seemed in line with the point about Isabelle.

The age thing at times feels paradoxical, probably for the reason you said at the start. In general, the whole narrative, really about everything, is very exclusive. It creates this hierarchy where any and every attribute can be placed on a scale and regarded in relation to each other. “Not like other x” is a common element in a lot of things in the overall series, and because of that, the justifications behind each thing and character go in circles.

Clare constantly tries to prop up her characters with such comments as you mentioned with Simon making a note on Jace. In City of Bones, Jocelyn is not like any other pathetic mother trying to meet up single dads in PTA meetings. Jocelyn doesn’t do things like Other Mothers do because she is not like Other Mothers. Jace needs no elaboration—the whole series as to him almost exists to glorify his excellence. Clary exemplifies different values but clearly ones Clare, at least in the beginning of TSC, held in higher regard than what she thought the Other Girls (yuuuck) were like.

Maybe there’s similar thought processes as to the ages of the characters. A character might possess an attribute that is so downright common and ordinary but one Clare wants to highlight and exclusively limit to only apply to that specific character that it becomes just ridiculous and unbelievable. I suppose Jace in that instant in City of Glass is supposed to sound cool for the fact that he is a soldier and seemingly reporting to a commanding officer. Again positioning Shadowhunter culture (and Jace) above Simon and menial mundanes and teenagers.

Even within that notion, Clare is not interested in exploring differences between Shadowhunters and mundanes rather than elevating Shadowhunters above mundanes because their culture or angelic warriors is much cooler than anything regular humans could do. When Clare makes a distinction or a comparison, it is not because she is making an impartial and equal observation about her world through her characters—it’s always making that hierarchy known and what she personally thinks is better and worthy of focus and attention.

Her writing is so superficial because she is incapable of those objective views, because she doesn't even really like all the characters and things she has created. Everything she doesn't like seems to exist so that the characters she does like can be elevated above them and so make them artificially seem cooler and exclusive in comparison. It’s also strange that while City of Glass made a clear distinction between who could attend the Council meetings (at that point only Alec), City of Heavenly Fire allows Clary and Jace and whoever attend. They didn’t even have a role to play in the meeting to justify their presence as to previously established rules. So we just forget the age thing then.

Those innocuous interactions are sometimes minimal things (serving some arbitrary and short-sighted point like the one with Jace behaving like a mature adult would) but in the grand scheme of things might end up going against the logic and continuity of characterizations because of that very shortsightedness. It’s actually really funny now that you’ve pointed it out. :’D

I think it's shameful of Clare to put in a bad light all the characters that don't want (or can't) come out due to circumstances or simply because they don't feel comfortable enough to. Being in the closet for her it's just a sign you're a bad guy and you deserve bad things happen to you

Circumstances Clare herself has created! Yet she fails to deliver the consequence and consequently disparages those characters who operate only within the framework of the society she created.

When I read Chain of Thorns, I was aghast how the hell that theme repeated itself with Charles. Absolutely stunned also by the fact how none of the reviewers brought this up either. Or how Ari’s character was treated in entirety until she decided to grovel at Anna’s feet and devote herself to Anna. Alec was actively punished by the narrative and ridiculed by the writing until he made the ultimate sacrifice and came out in front of everyone.

By treating her closeted characters all the same like this, Clare reveals her own mindset time and time again. TMI and TLH are far apart in time, but this fact remains completely unchanged. It’s appalling.

God, it wasn't until i read your recap that I remembered how outrageous that Mortal Sword scene in city of heavenly fire was. There's no control, no discipline, no respect. There's just been a major attack. They're at war. Why are there kids running wild at the war council? I don't even blame Emma entirely. I mean, maybe I do a little, but that might just be hindsight bias. But the adults. What are they doing? Someone send her out. Get this situation under control. There's a lot of self-righteousness from both Clary and Emma for a supposed warrior culture.

And it's not just them, either. None of the main shadowhunter characters act like they were raised to be soldiers from a young age. Not just the flashy, edgy parts like carrying weapons and glorifying violence. The heavily regimented training. The hierarchy. The self discipline. They're all under 18, but they spend all their time pining after each other and being snarky. You never see them train, except maybe in the academy. We hear about Emma training, but we don't really see it. And they don't really act like it either. I remember city of ashes was particularly egregious. Jace was a menace from start to finish. And they brushed over it because the inquisitor was biased and overly aggressive. But that was done to make Jace look better. He harassed Luke's werewolves for no reason, and Luke was sympathetic to him. No wonder Maryse sent him away, she probably knew he couldn't keep his mouth shut to save his life.

And he was awful in their first meeting too. Mouthy and rude right from the jump. Imogen came in hot, but he didn't even try to help himself. And Maryse had no control over the situation. Do some parenting, girl. Luke has a whole conversation with Maryse, but never mentions that Jace was out drinking, fighting, and throwing around slurs. Charlotte has no power to discipline Will when he's mistreating members of staff and his fellow shadowhunters. Shut him up. These kids act like they've never had to take an order in their lives. They're usually too horny to get any work done. The only one who's semi-behaved is Max, and he gets killed for it.

Shadowhunter culture is so all over the place. Isabelle and Alec says they're like soldiers all about respect for their elders, but they call adults by their first name, disobey constantly, and don't have a cohesive structure. How does this army work? As far as I can tell, Consul and Inquisitor are political positions, not military ones.

Outrageous is the right words. The lack of control and discipline is outrageous! These are supposed to be soldiers and have strict societal norms and culture as to fighting and war. They are an army and fail to have any sense of discipline where it counts. Sure, Clare talks the talk but writes Jace mouthing off Inquisitors and Emma running self-centeredly around while the adults do nothing to seize the control of the situation. An official business.

There is a lot of talk that never transfers into action. Clare is not interested in showing any of what would solidify any of the claims she makes.

Even as to the meeting preceding the war council, the same skewed sympathy is on Emma’s side similarly to Jace who did everything in CoA to be a loathsome idiot. Especially as to Luke who, instead of defending his pack, constantly sympathized Jace and had no discipline for him. No parenting. Jace had no boundaries, and when such were put in place by a commanding officer, it is wrong because Jace was right and the Inquisitor was wrong in what the villain is planning on doing.

In the Mortal Sword scene, Clary can run after Emma and both disrupt the official proceedings pretty ruthlessly, and the only consequence is that Robert and Jia both might be disapproving of it.

The lack of discipline is truly at the heart of it. I’m not even arguing whether that is moral or ethical—like c’mon, child soldiers—but children raised to be demon hunters and soldiers is at the heart of the series, and it fails to be credible in every possible turn. In similar fashion their society fails to deliver consequences on other matters as well.

Adults demanding order and respect are made seem like petulant children. The petulant children who are supposedly raised to follow orders and not overstep are written self-righteous and more intelligent than a whole governing body is capable of being.

It’s also ridiculous and outrageous that the only proper positions in the Clave are Consul and Inquisitor and no actual military ones. How are they organized at all? Any sentries? Massed archers? Mounted archers? Shock troops? ANY PROPER MILITARY TACTICS?

Nooo. But hey, look how golden and muscular Jace is.

i'm so glad you call out the insane amount of hand holding in these books. there are too many instances ofc but one that actually made me groan was this part from a side story (dont remember which) where jace says something to tease izzy and alec laughs and the narration says something like "alec laughed even though he loved his sister" like ??? did cc feel that without this helpful line the reader would take this completely normal sibling interaction to mean alec fucking hates his sister? its such a small line that i felt kind of silly getting annoyed but i also think its part of a larger issue. part of why i guessed bigger stuff right away (like will's curse being fake as fuck ) when i first read it when i was like 14 because cc absolutely refuses to treat the reader as intelligent lol

The constant overexplaining always bums me out. It's downright annoying, especially since Clare's writing style never improves. I haven't found her to be particularly capable of introspection as a writer, which may explain why there isn't much development as to the style. She found her thing and stuck to it, unfortunately, though there seems to be trends she picks up depending on the book.

In City of Bones her writing was filled to the brim with participle phrases, which made the writing loose and choppy, especially in action scenes where the pace should be tight and exact. In City of Lost Souls we get to know what everyone is wearing constantly, which was a clear change compared to previous works, although they do also describe the characters' clothing. Regarding overall writing in the series, actions and the characters' emotions are constantly depicted through the eyes. The eyes are utilized mostly as the sole guide in the course of the action or emotional interpretation. Clare is the worst with her over-reliance on eyes and facial expressions.

Overexplanation is such a constant phenomenon in any of her works that it begins to border on funny. I personally can't explain her need to hold hands with anything other than the fact that she doesn't trust the intelligence and cleverness of her readers. Or if not that, then her own hubris of not wanting to risk even the tiniest of details having gone missed (which circulates back to not trusting your readers to figure things out). She even overexplains even when she has adequately shown things!

Referring to the point you mentioned, there are many strange expressions in the series, the background of which shows the Clare's own strange bias in her thinking. The Last Hours was immensely weird with Cordelia being envious of Lucie getting to spend time with James, her own brother, and Matthew and co. protecting Cordelia's feelings for Alastair, as if the thruth bombs they would've dropped had the capacity to completely break Cordelia and Alastair's relationship. As if Matthew was in any way on the same level of importance and depth in their intercharacter relationship for that to happen.

They weren't presented as such, but all that revealed what Clare thinks. All that just creates major discord on how the characters should even be interpreted. Or the scene where Clary thinks there's nothing weird lying on the bed with Simon. What am I supposed to think when you say it like that? I'm going to think it's totally weird because you felt the need to explain that it totally wasn't. Similarly in the example you provided with Alec and Isabelle, as if siblings laughing at each other would come even near affecting any love between them. Why would you think that? Why would you feel the need to underline it if you didn't think that's how it works?

Blergh. Anyway, big agree.

17-Shadowhunters

An Au where some downworlders and nephilims are closer to their instincts(angel/demon side) than others and can have quite...gory or scary courting methods.

Magnus Bane was known for having many people falling in love with him but had only ever been in two relationships(Camille and another that is up to the writers choice) as by rumours it is said he has high standards.

In truth, Magnus was very close to his demon/fallen angel instincts and his 'high standards' were simply too horrifying for others to the point that while he had been in two relationships, those he had been with hadn't completely been in agreement with how he was and he changed himself for them.

While Magnus knew that there were others like him, none of them seemed to fit him right so he had almost given up to find someone who understood him and could love him completely until one night, a shadowhunter came to his door with a creature's body that was still bleeding and dirtying the hallway.

He had been confused until said shadowhunter said he wished to court magnus and hoped that the creature that had been giving problems to warlock children would be a good first courting gift.

Magnus was surprised by this but was also moved by it as no one had given him such wonderful gift not even his best friend who while respecting his taste, kept way from it more often than not.

Of course that Magnus didn't simply accept immediately despite how enamoured by the gift he was, he demanded to know the shadowhunter's name and what made him wish to court Magnus

The shadowhunter presented himself as Alexander 'Alec' Lightwood, the new Head of New York's Institute and son of two people that most of the downworld in New York hated.

That almost made Magnus take a step back but he decided to keep listening as he knew that the children aren't always like their parents.

Alec then went on to say he had seen Magnus when he was a teen as the warlock came to take care of the wards of the Institute and Alec found him interesting so he decided to ask people about him but once seeing that most people told him what they believed to be the truth, Alec decided to investigate about Magnus himself.

He said he found himself being even more interested on him which didn't change as he grew up so he planned to court Magnus once he had reached the same level as Magnus in power(so yes, Alec would have more power inside the Clave then he did in canon).

Magnus found himself fascinated even more and decided to give Alec a chance to court him and see where it would lead.

Each of Alec's courting gifts were perfect, just bloody enough but with a good reason behind it, so Magnus couldn't wait for the last courting gift and if he would still be given such beautiful gifts once they got married(this all happened before Clary appeared).

But before Alec could prepare everything he needed to for the final courting gift, his siblings and Raj or other shadowhunter(because Alec while protective of his siblings, he won't be allowing them to do whatever they wish and walk all over him) brought a mundane to the Institute and runed her without knowing if she might actually have enough angel blood to take runes and instead of calling a warlock to save her.

Of course that he gave a very stern talk to the three shadowhunters and put them in ichor duty besides forcing them to take classes with the little kids seeing that didn't seem to understand what could have happened.

When Clary woke up, Alec was the one there and he put her down in her place when she started to make demands and explained to her how dangerous their world was and while they could take her commission to find her mother, if she wanted to help she would have to train like any other shadowhunter and only after a very throughout evaluation would she be allowed to help with missions.

Clary seemed to accept it after having some truths thrown to her face(like, she was raised mundane but she didn't care about how dangerous the shadowworld is? Like, people died, demons targeted people to kill or have sex with them, there were fights between different species, etc and she simply didn't care about it? I know she loved her mother but still, she should have taken a moment before bulldoze over everything and everyone) but unfortunately Jace and Izzy didn't seem to have listened to Alec and decided to take Clary to the Silent City and when she asked them if Alec let them, they said he did(which was a lie).

While it brought them the news that Clary parents were Valentine and Jocelyn and that her memories were taken by a warlock, Alec had been furious with his siblings and grounded them to their rooms with no permission to leave them as someone would take food to them.

Alec decided to talk again with Clary and ask if she wished to retrieve her memories, which may or not help her find her mother, before they started her training and Clary said that even if they didn't help her, it might give her information that may help her adjust to the shadowworld.

With that Alec called Magnus and told him about Clary to which the warlock told him everything he knew and that he needed to summon a demon to give back Clary's memories so Alec took Clary to Magnus were he had been having snacks with his friends(Ragnor, Catarina and Raphael) who agreed to help with the summoning of the demon.

When this was done, Alec brought Clary back and put her under the care and teaching of who had been Alec's own teacher(not Hodge) before he went back to planning things for his last gift to Magnus.

And said gift came to to his hands much earlier when Jace and Izzy were not grounded anymore and attracted Camille Belacourt's attention to certain mundane which she kidnapped.

Alec grounded his siblings again and went himself to get Simon back after reassuring Clary that he would bring him alive.

He talked with Raphael, who met him at the door, and told him that he would only punish Camille and leave the rest of the vampires out of wit which got him a raised eyebrow from Raphael but he let it go as most of the vampires hated Camille.

Alec retrieved Simon but had Raphael take him home before he started working on Magnus' last courting gift.

So the next night, Magnus found Alec at his door like the first time he appeared but instead of a creature's body, he held on his hand a still beating heart of a vampire and he knew immediately who it belonged to.

That night Magnus and Alec officially said their 'I love you's and created together their engagment rings.

How things would go from here? It's up to the writer but maybe have Magnus be the one to kill Valentine and gift his head or heart to Alec in front of the whole Clave just to see their reactions(especially if they had gotten married in secret with a very bloody ritual and no one knew until Magnus called Alexander his husband as he gave him his gift).

Hast thou found the one thy soul loves?” It was a question asked at every wedding: part of the Shadowhunter ceremony for a thousand years. The crowd hushed, the hush of holiness, of sacred ritual observed and shared. “I have found him,” Alec said. “And I will not let him go.” “Magnus Bane,” said Jia, “Hast thou gone among the watchmen, and in the cities of the world? Jace stepped forward and put one ring into Alec’s hand, and another into Magnus’s, and said something quietly to both of them that made them laugh. The rings were Lightwood family rings, etched with the traditional design of flames on the outside, and with words inscribed on the inside. “Aku cinta kamu,” Magnus read out, gazing at the interior of the ring, and he smiled at Alec, a brilliant, world-spanning smile. “My love for yours, my heart for yours, my soul for yours, Alexander. making a complete list of my thoughts of the show vs books since I finished it and will probably leave some stuff out since I’m super forgetful, sorry 💀

1. once again love that they upped the ages. glad we didn’t have centuries year old Magnus chasing teenager Alec or all the other inappropriate relationships in the books

2. Malec is fucking perfect on the show and it really showed that if any actually cares about them, they can make the characters much better and give the characters a better shot than the author ever did. I seriously love all the details Matt, Harry, and whoever wrote their episodes did. only one I cannot stand is when Alec doesn’t realize right away that Magnus and valentine switched bodies. but alec handled the immortality thing wayyyyyy better than book Alec ever could. book Alec (and pretty much TMI content and etc) barely exists let’s be real

3. Izzy and Simon are way too rushed in the series but at least they have more do a friendship and there’s no cheating storyline. but I kinda like Maia and Simon together. I feel that Maia understood Simon.

adding: I don’t mind Simon and clary in the show dating and the way they end things is not as harsh as it is in the books. maybe clary (I’m being kind lmao) actually cares about Simon in the show but still kinda uses him at times

4. might be the only thing I’ll say about the books that’s nice but it would’ve been cute to see the vacation storyline (eldest curses) in the show. would’ve been cute to see a Malec holiday and moving towards them having children 🥹

5. Maia doesn’t get enough credit. she’s one of the few sensible people on the show and gets more attention than book Maia ever did

6. speaking of Maia, I’m glad they didn’t go too extreme with the Jordan plot. in the books, I think she was made to feel to get over how Jordan treated her. but man, why does the actor have to be attractive 😭

7. I really like Maryse and Luke together. they fit each other quite well. Maryse has some of the best development in the show and I loved seeing her grow

8. glad Jocelyn was killed off. she was more insufferable in the books so glad the show decided they didn’t need that energy

9. Jace and clary are both clearly insufferable but it’s worse in the books. I feel like in the show they’re still pretty bad but it’s a little tamed

10. Alec deserved better than jace. dude had the audacity to act as though Alec is a fling, expected Alec at his beck and call to do whatever he wanted while not understanding or caring about Alec’s feelings and his needs, practically invites himself at Magnus’s place while being the worst roommate, and then taking for granted all the people who sacrificed (MAGNUS AND HIS MAGIC LITERALLY THIS LOVELY MAN LOSES HIS MAGIC AND HIS HOME AND HIS MIND) once again to help his worthless ass

11. wish they wouldn’t have killed ragnor off. we got to see a lot of vampires and wolves but not a lot of warlocks. would’ve been great to see more of Magnus’s friends. you could seriously make a whole show based off on Magnus and his life

12. kinda wish they kept camille around. I know she was drama for malec in the beginning but she’s still a very fascinating character

13. I’m 100% thankful for the show not following the books and creating their own world

14. I would’ve loved to see more of the alternate universe episodes. one of the best episodes

15. ALL THE MALEC PARALLELS. these two beautiful and desperately, devoted, in love with one another men are seriously the best part of the show 😭 the fact that there are no cheating stories (when Alec is all drunk, underhill is flirting and all Alec can talk about is Magnus. Magnus defies bisexual stereotypes when dot tries to kiss him.), no taking away immortality or throwing fits or bierasure, or any toxic storylines is one of my fav things about Malec. they’re just two beings who are so in love with one another, who communicate, and are just completely devoted to each other. and it’s one of the reasons why everyone was so hooked on Malec. they’re healthy but you’re also excitedly rooting for them 🫶🏼

16. Clary deserved to lose her ability with runes. the angels message was to not use her rune ability for whatever she pleased but she took advantage of it. but I will say, some helped but I feel that the rest she just used because she didn’t care

17. season three breakup wrecked me and I’ll not emotionally recover from that. it breaks my heart seeing Alec break his own heart and Magnus’s all so Magnus can have his magic and be whole again. I’m so glad they got married in the end 💓

18. I’m glad the twinning rune went to clary instead of jace because how many times does this worthless fucker need saved????? SERIOUSLY HOW MANY

19. I think Magnus recognizing what Alec needs at the beginning when they meet is beautiful. I don’t think it’s creepy (as some book fans state.) and it shows that Magnus understands that Alec is not ready to be out. I’m glad Magnus doesn’t get shitty with Alec on not being out like he does in the books

20. also book vs show thing. I actually like the whole marrying Lydia plot. I get the whole grand gesture of kissing in wherever they were- sanctuary???? (y’all cannot pay me enough to read TMI again, I will not go through that torture again) but I really hate that it’s not even in Alec or Magnus’s pov. CC makes a point of giving characters she chooses to have unnecessary pov

21. I probably forgot something but I mainly skipped all the clace content that didn’t involve Alec or Magnus but otherwise, messy show but so amazing for the Malec content. Izzy, Maia, Raphael, and Simon are a bonus as well. I’m just saying that the show could’ve been a whole lot worse lmao
