A/N: Hi chat. This little doozy has been written in a bathtub, at 8am while i’m violently hungover. So… there’s that. I’m going to try to get back into writing. pls hold me accountable.
She watches you as you leave the hotel to head to dinner.
She watches you as you sit down at the expensive steakhouse, avoiding her gaze.
She watches while you sip your wine, eyes staring off into space.
Keeley and Sassy seem to notice her staring because every few moments between their chatter they share a look, and then look at Rebecca.
“I’m going to the loo.” Keeley says suddenly, “Sass you wanna join me?”
You don’t even look up and Rebecca scowls at them as they leave. She waits a beat. Two. You still won’t look at her.. And for some reason that’s driving her insane.
“Y/N.” She says softly. You straighten, but still avoid her gaze. “Yes, Rebecca?” You say. So… coldly. So unlike yourself.
“Darling i’m…” She chokes on her words for a moment— “I apologize for what I said to Sassy and Keeley earlier. It was harsh, and inappropriate. I do think of us as friends-“
You finally look up at her. With those doe eyes of yours and they’re watering, “You hurt my feelings.” You say, deadpan, “Rebecca I know what this is. Our arrangement I mean but-“
Rebecca’s throat grows thick. Kicking herself because she’d hurt you, “I know darling and I- I am deeply sorry. I…. They just cornered me and I felt like a trapped animal. I reacted and didn’t consider your feelings.”
Your eyes grow soft then, and Rebecca lets out the breath she didn’t realise she was holding. But there’s something else in those eyes of yours too…. something amount like… guilt?
“I forgive you Rebecca. Actually I um… Do you remember my 21st when we took that trip?” You ask, chewing your lip. An insufferable habit that made Rebecca want to rip it from between your teeth—
She coughs instead, “Yes. Why?”
“I um…. I was really drunk, and young and stupid and I-“ Before you can finish however you’re interrupted by a giggling Keeley and Sassy. “So we ordered shots to get this ball rolling.” Keeley grins, Sassy taking the seat next to her.
Rebecca could scream. “Y/N, what were you saying about your-?” But the waiter is arriving. And Keeley is shoving a shot into her hand. And Sassy yours. And the moments gone. Rebecca’s teeth grind together as she plasters a smile, knocking back the tequila with a grimace.
At least you seem livelier now. It pains Rebecca when you shrink into yourself. But the way that Sassy is touching you makes her want to set fire to something for some reason. It’s innocent really. A light touch to your shoulder. A playful swat here and there. And you. You don’t seem to mind at all, which only serves to irritate her further.
The tequila has you relaxed, and instead of snapping, Rebecca merely sets a possessive hand on your bare thigh. Eliciting a soft gasp from you. “There’s a pap to your left.” The older woman purrs, pulling your chair closer to yours, “O-oh.” You say. And Rebecca knows it’s genuine. Her heart stammers.
There is no paparazzi. But there are idiots with phones and Rebecca doesn’t care because suddenly she isn’t seeing red anymore, now that she has you nearly in her lap, and that. That thought horrifies her more than it should.
She leans in, nose caressing your cheek like she’s playing the role, “Darling-“ She breathes, “I think we should head back to the room, no?” And you nod. By God do you nod.
“Are we going to do that thing where we all pretend to pay, and Rebecca insists?” Sassy teases
You nod no, “No this is on Daddy. So drink up ladies.” You grin, slapping down the black Amex that Rupert no doubt gave you to keep you placated.
Rebecca rolls her eyes, but the hand strung around your shoulders is caressing your collarbone and you look so delicious in that little lilac dress she can’t bring herself to care. She’s just claimed dominance over you. Not that she had to fight for it when you looked up at her like that.
Dinner ends quickly, and as your four head back to the hotel there’s paparazzi everywhere. Shouting your name, and Rebecca just grins. Like she won you at the bloody state fair — With her hand on the small of your back as you get into the car.
You’re a bit tipsy, and leaning your head on Rebecca’s shoulder, and she has to catch herself from caressing your arm. The ride is silent, save for Keeley and Sassy prattling on about only god knew what. There was a ringing of sorts in Rebecca’s ears. Her breathing quickening. You seem to notice, even in your haze. Because you look up at her suddenly and you caress her face so softly she might cry.
“Hey. I know it’s overwhelming. Those people are vultures Rebecca. I’ve got you.” You whisper. Not noticing Keeley and Sassy have stopped talking to stare at you.
Tears fill Rebecca’s eyes, “I-“ She starts. Not knowing how to explain this to you.
“No no it’s okay. Just take a deep breath with me, okay?” You assure her. Assuming it’s the paparazzi. The fake scenario you two are in. But it’s just dawned on Rebecca it’s so much more than that.
