Practice had ended nearly an hour ago.
As manager, Arunny was given full responsibility of closing the gym doors right after 6 clock. There was still light out, and the spring breeze gently blew as sounds of crickets filled her ears. Once the doors locked, she pocketed the keys.
Curfew was at 8:30, and whoever stayed out past that would get in trouble with the higher ups. Which was the last thing Arunny wanted to do. So, her plan was to clean up, lock the doors, and get back to her dorm on time.
“What I should eat for dinner...dinner should've been served.” She muttered, walking along the sidewalk towards the girl dormitories. Her eyes were glued to the ground, not noticing the familiar figure coming towards her in the far left. Suddenly, a small vibration came from her phone. A slight buzz signifying a notification. Arunny paused in her steps before taking her phone out of her pocket, flipping it open. It was a voice message from her mother.
“កូន, make sure you eat something before you go to sleep.” Said her mother. She could hear her siblings fighting in the back. Arunny lets out a slight chuckle at the sound of them. Almost missing that chaotic energy. “Wanted to make sure you’re healthy over there. Eat, okay? And make sure you focus on your studies. Haah, okay bye, bye.”
The message continued till a small beep was heard. A smile appeared on Arunny’s face; hearing her native language spoken felt like a soft melody being sung. It was familiar, yet a contrast to the language here in Miyagi. Her finger hovered over the button, pressed on it, it started to record. Arunny leaned the phone close to her mouth, switching from Japanese to Khmer. “ម៉ែ, I just left the gym from practice. I’m on my way to get food at school. Don’t worry, I’m doing well. Love you.”
She clicked the sent button. During the process of sending the message, a voice spooked her. The person spoke directly by her ear. “Was that your mother on the phone?”
Arunny jumped, spitting out random noises. Upset, she turned her head to see who it was. Her eyebrows furrowed. “Hey! That wasn’t funny.” She exclaimed once she saw him. Arunny smacked Semi’s shoulder irrationally. Resulting in Semi laughing at her reaction.
“Well, sorry. But I thought you already saw me. I was way over there.” He snickered. He pointed with his thumb over his shoulder.
Arunny scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Well, I didn’t. And yes, that was my mother...but I was sending her a voice message. She was checking in if I ate already.” She flipped her phone closed. Her eyes lingered on Semi until her gaze shifted to the sunset.
A nice glow casted over her face, brightening her features. Arunny failed to notice Semi looking at her until the last second. Her eyes slightly widened before diverting elsewhere. “Well. What are you doing here? Practice was harsher than usual. Thought you would be with the others or in your dorm resting.”
Nervously, Semi rubbed his neck while avoiding eye contact. His eyes were low, almost like a wolf. A soft blush tinted his cheeks. His lips parted ever so slightly, finding the right words to start. “I have something for you.” He finally musters up. He shifted his weight from one leg to the next.
“Well, what is it? It’s almost 8:08...curfew is in-" Arunny observed him from head to toe, noticing that he was holding something behind his back. She tilted her head to the side, raising an eyebrow. “What's behind your back?”
Semi mentally face-palmed himself. He playfully rolled his eyes. “Couldn’t wait for me to tell you?” He replied, giving her a knowing look. He then pulled the item from behind.
It took Arunny a minute to register what was being presented. Arunny gasped as her hands went to her mouth.
It was a homemade paper Romduol flower. Cambodia’s national flower. Her mother's lands cultural symbol.
Her face begins to redden at the sight. She felt her stomach flutter, almost as if it were filled with butterflies. “Eita, it’s beautiful. How did you make this?” Arunny whispered. She immediately accepted the creation. She held it with such elegance and grace. The manager couldn’t help but admire the craft, and she began to giggle. “Thank you, Eita!”
Semi’s demeanor then loosened, sighing in relief. He chuckled, while closing his eyes. “I’m glad you like it.”
Arunny smiles beamed. “I love it! It reminds me of home!” Her fingers felt the petals, admiring the folding, gluing, and precision of the flower. “These don’t grow around here,” She muttered.
His eyes slowly settled on Arunny. A specific glint in his eyes that spoke more than what he led on. “I know.”
Arunny froze. Still holding the flower, she looked up. Before noticing that he’s already staring at her. Her brown eyes widened as her cheeks went bright pink. She swiftly uses her hand to cover herself from embarrassment. Finally breaking eye-contact that felt like it lasted a lifetime. She could feel his stare linger on her. And for the first time in forever, Arunny felt shy.
“I made it so you could have something dear to you. So, if you’re feeling homesick, you could hold this close to you.” Semi admitted. He watched for any indication of rejection in her expression. But there was nothing. All he saw was genuine appreciation.
“Thank you,” was all that Arunny could say. She put her hands together, like she was praying, against her heart, and bowed her head. It was how they showed thankfulness in Cambodia.
Semi couldn't contain his grin. Finding the gesture beautiful. “No problem-”
“SEMI-SEMI POO! Did she like it!” Tendou’s voice echoed.
Both Arunny and Semi looked behind them. His footsteps booming against the concrete. His silhouette got bigger once he came into view. He was jumping happily and threw an arm around Semi. "Aw! So romantic!" He cries dramatically.
Semi was trying to get Satori off him. “ASSHOLE! I didn’t even get to finish my sentence! You mood killer!” Semi barked at the middle blocker. Causing Arunny to burst out laughing at the unfolding scene.
She peaked over Tendou's shoulder. Ended up seeing the rest of the team behind Tendou, leaving Semi to be even more embarrassed.
"Arunny-San!" Goshiki exclaimed as he quickly runs to your side. "Whatcha got there? Did Semi-San gift you that? What is it?" He asked excitingly. Both of his fists were balled up, and he was rocking back and forth by the balls of his feet. Shirabu approached you guys and smacked the back of his head. "ACK!"
"Don't overwhelm her. Let her talk." He hissed.
Arunny waved a hand, telling Shirabu it's fine. She lifted the crafted flower to their eye level. "It's a romdoul flower. It's Cambodia's national flower. And Eita did make it for me." She glanced back at Semi with a proud twinkling grin.
Tendou squealed, now wrapping both arms around Semi. Making it even harder for Semi to escape his grasp. He placed his chin ontop of Semi's head. "She called you by your first name! Wow, this is gonna make me cry. I'm so proud of you Semi-Semi pookie."
Semi was trying everything he could to get Tendou off him. "Will you stop it with that Semi-Semi bull crap?!"
Arunny chuckled at the two. "Tendou, give him a break. He's turning really red!"
Chaos erupted when Yamagata and Tendou was teasing Semi, and Shirabu was glaring Goshiki, with Kawanishi trying to calm Shirabu down. Ohira and Arunny stood on the sidelines watching it all go down. They looked at each other and chuckled. Arunny then took out her phone to check the time.
