i can’t speak on behalf of all gaylors, but here are some of the reasons why we’re upset right now.

i don’t care if taylor is or isn’t queer, that isn’t the point. The point is that lavender and lavender relationships have a longstanding relationship with queerness and the lgbt community.

“the gays don’t own a color!” ok, we didn’t say we did, but describing your heterosexual relationship as lavender is inappropriate and ignores cultural context and significance.

The term “lavender haze” was not a term for a straight relationship in the 50s or ever. It was used in one episode of mad men and afterward added to urban dictionary. Just because taylor says it was used before in a straight context doesn’t mean that’s true.

Lavender has been used to describe “heterosexual” marriages wherein one or both participants are queer and married to hide their sexuality.

Renowned feminist Betty Friedan described lesbians as the “lavender menace” within the feminist movement in the 1970s, more than 50 years ago.

There was also a movement in the 50s similar to the red scare called the “lavender scare” wherein famous people were outed and arrested for being gay.

Many colleges and universities have a “lavender graduation” to honor their LGBTQ+ students.

Taylor herself demonstrated that she’s aware of this symbolism when she dressed an actor in lavender in the “mean” music video to signal to the audience that he was queer.

We’re not mad that taylor used lavender and we’re not saying straight people can’t wear or like lavender. we’re mad bc she straightsplained away a term steeped in queer history and significance and her and taylor nation got straight couples to start describing their relationships as “lavender”.

This is straight up appropriation and it’s fair for us to be upset. If you think this isn’t worthy of an emotional reaction then just say you don’t know/understand queer history and go.
