Gentrification at its Finest - Families Forced to Move Out
By: Jocelyn Contreras
Despite its image of violence like gangbanging, Inglewood is having three major constructions and renovations. The first one was the renovation of the Forum, bought in 2012 by the Madison Square Garden owner. The second one the construction of the LA Rams stadium, and the third one is the abolishment of the small-business owned shops to the construction a shopping and residential district on Market Street. This is a look at the renovations and reconstructions in the city of Inglewood and the effects it is having on low-income families: moved by gentrification.

Mike’s Place
By Claire Harvey
Meet Mike Herrera. He's an old Pacific Crest Trail hiker who purchased a plot of land right next to the trail in the Anza-Borrego desert and opened it up to incoming hikers. Since then he's become a well known Trail Angel: Someone who volunteers to help facilitate hikers on the 2600 mile backpack journey from the border of Mexico to the Border of Canada. Providing land to set up camp, ice cold beers, and homemade pizzas, Mike's Place is the perfect place for Pacific Crest Trail hikers to take off their shoes and relax after a painstaking 200 miles into their journey through the desert.

Fans enjoyed free photos with costumed characters as well as take away souvenirs such as foam light sabers and customizable buttons. Both cosplayers, fans, and family came together to share their love for Star Wars on a sunny afternoon.

Irvine Korean Cultural Festival - A Nexus Connecting East and West
By: Steven Shinder
The Irvine Korean Cultural Festival was held on Saturday, May 13 at the Irvine Civic Center. Since 2010, this annual event has been used to celebrate Korean heritage and showcase various aspects of the culture to anyone who might be curious. The inside of the Civic Center building had tables displaying arts, crafts, and educational materials on such activities as K-pop. Outside, people crowded the plaza and the parking lot, where performers played music, danced, and demonstrated taekwondo onstage. All around, vendors selling different cuisine options, including twisted potatoes, barbecue squid, and Turkish ice cream called dondurma. Judging from all the clapping and eating, many people enjoyed the experience.

A Birthday Celebration at an Asian Buffet
By: Katie Xing
Nearly 100 family members and friends showed up at the Gold Hibachi Buffet to celebrate Zoey Wei’s 1st birthday. The party takes place in a private room located in the far back side of the buffet.
At this Asian style buffet, the number one craved food item is crab legs and Zoey’s guests can’t get enough of it.
As everyone celebrates an important moment in Zoey’s life, they are eating as many crab legs their stomachs can hold.

The Many Sequoias of Spring
by Jose Servin
Every thousand feet that you climb or descend at Sequoia National Park becomes a new universe. Geographers attribute this change to the adiabatic lapse rate, a term that basically means the higher you go, the colder it gets. The lapse rate establishes that at about 6000 feet, the air is cold enough that water begins to condensate on particles in the atmosphere and become water, in the same way that droplets form outside of a cup with cold liquid in it on a hot day. On some days, its even cold enough that water condenses into snow, though the science behind that isn’t solid yet.
Maybe in a class room it's difficult to grasp this concept, but not at Sequoia. Here, you can feel and see when you’re above 6000 feet, because everything is white and the cold creeps through your bones. If you drive ten minutes downwards, everything turns verdant, and the almost mute sound of soft snow pelting the ground is replaced by the roaring echo of a nearby waterfall, or a different bird every few feet belting tunes. Between these two universes are campsites with bear lockers, giant RV’s towing families of tourists and visitor stations where camp rangers tell you to avoid going back to the snowy universe above because one motorcyclist fell off the side of the two-way road already, and two cars collided with each other shortly after. But that’s no problem, because even at 4000 feet Sequoia is a world away from the golden wide plains of the central valley, the polluted bubble of SoCal, and never ending plain-ness of the Mojave which connects them both.

“Lay on!”
SWORD at UCI is the place where to have fun safely by fighting with students in the arts of Belegath Medieval Combat. Every week at Aldrich Park a big group of fighters wait new students to follow their steps and lay on the other team.
It is not difficult to realize how serious they take the fight, but they are welcoming to new members, who don’t have to comply any previous requirement but just wanting to fight.

UCI Ballet Folklorico hosted a Spring Recital to celebrate dance styles from a variety of different Mexican states. The dancers emitted great energy from their smiles and their enthusiasm towards the dances was displayed by gracefulness of their movements. Even in the sidelines, off stage dancers showed their support by letting out “gritos” that riled up the crowd. The house was packed as people watched the dancers strut in their tradition Mexican ballet folklorico attire.

The Steady and Repetitive Lives of Illegal Immigrants in Chinatown
by Jason Lu
Often times in this generation, we forget to take a step back and see how “the other side lives.” And by other side, meaning from someone who came from a 2nd generation immigrant household, the idea that life for these people start somewhere. Usually these people start in ethnic enclaves like Los Angeles’ Chinatown working early mornings and late nights just to return to their small apartments to repeat the day all over again. It begins with a new issue that their lives travel in no vertical direction and work until their children begin a new chapters in their lives. Here’s some photos that capture some aspects of these humbled workers.

With or Without Mimi
By: Ashley Duong
Various political groups and concerned citizens of California's 45th Congressional District came together to host a Town Hall on May 9th at Northridge High School in Irvine. As their representative, Mimi Walters, continued to avoid constituents and refuse to hold her own town hall, residents of the 45th District felt cheated and ignored. Her absence at the event spoke volumes of her commitment to the people she represents, and citizens walked away knowing their voices would continue to be ignored if Walters remained in office.

A Breezy Beach Day with Best Buddies
By: Paola Granados
There are few better ways to spend a sunny Saturday morning than at the beach with some of your best friends. This past weekend, the UCI Best Buddies Club took advantage of the clear skies and cool breeze and decided to spend the day at Huntington Beach.
The Best Buddies group is a bubbly bunch of individuals who are dedicated to pushing past the social stigmas that come with having special needs. The members are comprised of individuals with and without special needs that together, plan and attend events where they can learn, socialize, and most importantly, have fun. The Best Buddies Beach Day event started with a morning beach clean-up with the Orange County Coast Keepers. After the clean-up, the rest of the day was left for chilling, grilling, and grinning.
