What do you think about the claim that pigs cannibalising each other is normal behavior and something they do out of boredom?
This is part of a long-running narrative where we pretend that mutilating aninals for profit is actually somehow in their best interests. We make the exact same claim about de-beaking chicks and de-horning calves, all three usually standardly performed with no anasthetic. Cannibalisation is not a normal behaviour, and the idea that it is wouldn’t be taken seriously in any other context besides farming. Pigs have their tails cut off because the cramped and overcrowded conditions they are kept in is extremely stressful; cannibalisation is a stress behaviour.
Farmers don’t do the to be cruel, it’s just way cheaper to cut their tails off so they won’t do this than to actually provide a suitable space where they can indulge their natural behaviours. It’s exactly like dogs biting each other’s tails because of stress aggression, and choosing to resolve that by cutting them off rather than address the actual problem. Note that pigs in sanctuaries don’t need to have their tails cut off any more than pet chickens need de-beaking. These mutilations are is not in the best interests of animals in any way.
Practices like these ones are why it’s so incredibly frustrating to hear people talk about animal cruelty in farming as if its just isolated incidents and use that “not all farmers” rhetoric. Not all farmers are kicking and punching their animals, but I can almost guarantee that any pork you have ever bought from any regular store came from a pig who has had their tail cut off. This is not just an issue with bad farms, or even with factory farms, when an animal is being farmed for their flesh, meat, milk, eggs or skin, their welfare will always be discarded if it interferes with profit.

is it cruel to ride elephants?
Yes, definitely. Elephants are known to be trained using incredibly brutal methods, so any place offering elephant riding, whether they claim to be a sanctuary or not, is definitely cruel. Being ridden by humans for entertainment purposes is exploitative in and of itself, so there is really no justifying it.

Seascape Waves (1911) by D. Howard Hitchcock (American, 1861-1943)
think about all the cute people you’ve seriously crushed on in class or the times you’ve looked at a stranger and realized how beautiful they looked in that moment, flecks of gold light hitting the tips of their eyelashes, deep in thought, rosy-cheeked and unknowingly captivating
now think about how many times that’s likely happened to you but no one voiced it. just like you have secretly admired others, others have admired you. someone has been silently overwhelmed with the uniqueness of your features or the smoothness of your voice. even though you might not always be told how beautiful you are, remember this. and maybe even tell someone the next fleeting compliment you have, because people aren’t reminded often enough just how beautiful they are
