five years is obviously a big deal bc its half a decade. but its also a big deal for me personally because five years is like, my self-imposed "this is when you can stop letting that past define you". i've had problems with ruminating on shit i find embarrassing that i did and so thats my like. "stop thinking about it" thresh hold. so this is of course a long winded way of saying that it feels weird to finally have the dsmp fall in that time period.
in a lot of ways im a very different person than i was then. but i'm also still me. i still get emotionally invested in things i find embarrassing. but i think over the years the way i handle them has shifted. im not as hesitant to be critical of things that i love. its easier for me to see the flaws in celebrities whose work i might admire, i don't think my ego is an intrinsically connected to what i enjoy as it was back then. i think i felt a need to defend the dsmp and everyone in it constantly, because i thought of criticism towards it as criticism towards myself. even if i haven't grown out of falling in love with flawed media, its much easier for me to take in the reality than it was back then.
i still feel a lot of guilt, though, about if i am partially responsible for the flaws that DID emerge from the dsmp. i know, i know, these horrible people were manipulative, you were about the same age as tommy, blah blah. doesn't erase the fact that i was a part of the reason dream was trending everyday on twitter. doesn't change that fact that i was one of the views on ynba. doesn't change that i overlooked racism, sexism, homophobia in creators because i wanted to believe they had the same moral make up as me. i don't know. i also wonder, even if i was more critical of everything back then, what good would it have done? whether i walked with the heard or away from it, doesn't change the fact that i was just one sheep.
and more importantly, could i have come to that place of awareness without the negative experiences i had in the dsmp? i couldn't tell you. all i can say is that its hard to feel love for something when year after year its legacy leaves behind more harm than good. i get that roleplay is characters, but to be honest i find it impossible to divorce the reality of the creators from their roleplay. it was still their internet faces and names. i dont know. lets blow everything up

yeah sometimes he goes off for days on his own and we're not sure if he eats or drinks or sleeps but im sure he's fine, he probably won't destroy the country we're all working to reclaim
