OC Raw Dog Recalls Chicken, Fish and Produce Raw Frozen Canine Formulation Distributed in VT, PA, and CO

OC Raw Dog food distributed in Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Colorado OC has been RECALLED!

Raw Dog of Rancho Santa Margarita, California is voluntarily recalling 640 lbs. of Chicken, Fish and Produce Raw Frozen Canine food, reporting that it is potentially contaminated with Salmonella.

Please note that no illnesses have been reported, and no other OC Raw Dog manufactured products are affected.

Recall Details:

The recall is limited to the Chicken, Fish and Produce Raw Frozen Canine,  packaged in the 6.5 lb. dozen patties, the 4 lb. Doggie Sliders, and the 3 lb. Meaty Rox. The Lot number is 1819, and the “use by” date is 05/05/16.

You can find the codes on the bottom left corner of the back of the packages.

Why The Recall?

Routine testing by the Colorado Department of Food and Agriculture found a potential risk.

They confirmed that a sample they collected at a retailer testd for the presence of Salmonella in a 3 .lb bag of “Chicken, Fish and Produce Raw Frozen Canine Formulations” Meaty Rox.

Important to note, a sample from the same lot was previously tested by the California Department of Agriculture and had a negative Salmonella result.

What Now?

If you have a package of this food, either dispose of the product immediately or return it (for a replacement) to the retailer where it was purchased.

Questions? Contact the company at 1-844-215-DOGS (3647), Monday thru Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM PST. If you get an automated answering system, the company has requested that customers leave a message, and they will call back as soon as possible.

What if you live in Canada? Report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.

[HERO DOG] The Golden Retriever Service Dog That Made a Golden Save #HeroDog

Figo the Golden Retriever service dog made a move that saved his blind owner from being hit by a school bus – throwing himself between her and the oncoming bus!

As Figo and his owner were crossing the street, he moved from her right side to her left to protect her from the bus, saving her life. The EMTs on the scene reported that although Figo was hurt, with a broken leg, he would not leave her side.

Yes, he saved her life and the good news is they are both okay and recuperating in respective hospitals.

  Brewster Police Chief John Del Gardo said, “Despite having a severe leg injury, Figo would not leave Stone’s side.

Amazingly, Figo didn’t yelp in pain but calmly struggled to stay with Stone.

“The dog did not want to leave the side of the woman at all…it was the same thing with her, she did not want to leave the dog’s side,” Del Gardo said. “She was very, very concerned about the dog. My officers that were there and the Fire Department assured her everything would be fine.”

“You really can’t touch an injured dog guarding someone. Touch them — they’re aggressive. Not this dog,” said Del Gardo. “I’ve seen service dogs in action, they really are a working wonder.”

What a sweet, loyal and true #HeroDog! As amazing as we know dogs are, it is still incredible to know that he instinctively knew to put himself between his owner and the bus, and an amazing act of bravery and sacrifice.

Discover the Canine Non-Profit Where Senior Dogs Find Sanctuary

In Mount Juliet, TN, there’s a canine non-profit that not only celebrates Senior Dogs, they provide a sanctuary for them. Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary (OFSDS) is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with beautiful heart.

Michael and Zina Goodin, a Mt. Juliet couple, saw that senior dogs are far too often tossed aside as they age and need additional or special care – and they decided to do something about it. They created OFSDS, where every dog is treated like a member of the family, and cared for with great love.

Three years have passed since they founded Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary, and now more than 45 senior dogs have found a home there. 

We know it’s hard for any of our Local Dog Daily community to understand how anyone could toss any dog aside – let alone a senior dog who has given love, loyalty, and dedication to an owner for so many years. The good news in all of this is that OFSDS has set a wonderful example of a couple who decided to do something about it — and it’s possible for you and me to do the same. 

Maybe your life can’t accommodate caring for senior dogs – we get that, too – but what we can do is to support organizations like this who do so much, and give a warm, caring and loving home to sweet, loving senior dogs.

Here’s a photo of some of them just last night — yes, they really sleep in the home all together – one incredible pack.

In addition to the 45+ dogs who live at the Sanctuary, approximately 90 more are placed in foster homes with loving people who want to give back to our Senior dogs.

“We kind of think of that as an expansion of the sanctuary,” Zina Goodin said. “If we had that many dogs here, we’d have to expand tremendously. We would lose that family environment, that home environment. The dogs would get less personal attention.”

In exchange, the nonprofit pays for the dogs’ vet bills for the remainder of their lives. The Goodins said it’s a small price to pay for what they get in return.

“As soon as you get them into a home, they just spring back to life,” Michael Goodin said. “It’s amazing. And old dogs are great because most of them have been trained all their lives.”

There are over 750,000 OFSDS Facebook fans, which shows that there are many who care and want senior dogs to have the chance to live out the rest of their lives in a caring environment.

Have Lighted Leash and Collar – Will Travel

Do you hear the call of the open road? Summer’s almost here! Whether you’re thinking of heading to Grandma’s, the mountains, the lake, the beach or anywhere in between, it’s a good time to start planning if you want to take Fido along.

You need to find out if your pets are welcome where ever you may go for one thing. Sounds crazy — we know — but the world isn’t always as pet-friendly as we’d like. Nothing kills summer fun like showing up at your rental and discover – too late!—they won’t let Fido stay (that happened to one acquaintance!)

But that won’t happen to you because you’re smart and organized. You’ve booked pet-friendly accommodations and planned your route. You’re also safety conscious.

Tips for Planning Your Summer Vacation with Your Dog

Your dog needs to be secure in the car. Imagine hitting the breaks and an 80 pound dog slams into your back. At 50 miles an hour, that’s equivalent of 2400 pounds of force. Ouch! We like a good canine seat belt harness to keep your pet secure. Not only does it keep everyone safe but some states have passed laws regarding securing your pet in the car.

Some of these new rules outlaw driving with small dogs in your lap – not a good idea –while others require seat belts for your pooch. You’ve got to admit, it’s a good idea to prevent loose dogs. Not only can they be hurt in an accident but they’re distracting if they’re roaming around the car.

A lighted LED collar and leash will keep you both visible so you’ll be seen on night-time – or early morning walks. Imagine your pet prancing along the beach or sidewalk with a lighted flashing collar. She’ll be the star of the Boardwalk.

It’s also good planning to pack a small first aid kit. Make sure you have some bandages and first aid cream. Bring copies of your pet’s medical records and the numbers to your vet and an emergency vet. Everyone will want to know that your pet is up-to-date on her shots and be aware of any health concerns.

Speaking of first-aid, we’re big fans of paw protection. Hot sand and asphalt can burn your pet’s paws. Hikes in the woods can lead to cuts when she steps on a sharp rock or tangles with a stick. Walks on the beach can result in spurs in our pup’s paws. Prevention is always the best medicine!

Pack a portable water dish for the car. You don’t want to be rooting around in the trunk looking for something to serve as a makeshift dog bowl. Bring bottled water for traveling and plan your route to include rest stops.

Depending on the age and energy level of your dog(s), you might plan extra time at those rest stops for energy burning – or, even see if there’s a nearby dog park you can use. Everyone knows a good puppy is a tired puppy.

Pack plenty of your pet’s food too. And treats! Treats can ease the stress of travel.

Traveling with pets can be fun but requires a little extra planning. Start now and you’ll have a fantastic summer vacation.

A Couple On Vacation Encountered a Pack of 34 Stray Dogs and Cats, The 'Baja 34 Pack', Don't Miss What Happens Next

This – this is a story of hope and the the kind of story that we love. A couple on vacation encountered a pack of THIRTY FOUR stray dogs and cats; they were thin, hungry, and in need of medical attention, but most were very friendly.

What happens next is just so beautiful.

This couple, Jeff and Diane Hall, began to care for the dogs and cats – they brought them food and water every day, and what they discovered was nothing shy of amazing and inspiring…  although they were starving, these animals got along as a true pack.

“We fed them as one big pack and they just dove for the food and had no food aggression – even with the cats! We had some wet food and could feed them a forkful of food one at a time and they would all sit there and take turns, yes, even with the cats,” the Halls described.

The Halls wanted to bring the animals back to the US with them, but because of laws and restrictions they were unable to. That did not deter them…

The Halls did not accept the fact that Mexico would not let them bring the ‘Baja 34 Pack’ home with them, but time was limited, so they made short-term arrangements for their care, and returned to the United States.

The Baja Pack consists of 8 puppies about 3-4 weeks old, 5 puppies about 14 weeks old, 14 adult dogs and 7 cats.

The Halls knew there was significant overpopulation of dogs in Mexico and the Baja, but they were still  “awestruck by the number of dogs and cats living in one pack and trying to survive together.”

Fortunately, the Halls founda rescue group called Baja Dogs La Paz that helps bring dogs back to the US and Canada for adoption. This group works with shelters, and we are thrilled to report, are assisting the Halls with their rescue project of the Baja 34 Pack!

The Halls are raising funds to help the Baja 34 Pack and help cover the costs of spaying and neutering the animals, give them health checks and vaccinations and work towards having them transported to Minnesota, where the Halls are from, and hope to find them loving homes.

We’re so excited to share that since this campaign began, some of this sweet pack has arrive din Minnesota, and have been adopted.

“Each and every one of these dogs and cats are well behaved and would make wonderful family pets,” the Halls write.

How amazing, inspiring, and encouraging is this — a couple took action to help homeless animals in need.

[EVENT] Help Local Dogs and Have Fun at the Animal Rescue League Cape Cod Event Today

The Cape Cod Animal Rescue League’s fifth annual Paws in the Park event is TODAY, May 30th!

This is a can’t-miss event for dogs and their humans and one of the Cape Cod’s largest pet-friendly festivals. #capecod #animalrescueleague #brewster 

Is your dog the Best Kisser? Is she the smallest or the biggest dog around? Does he have the Waggiest Tail? Those are all some of the fun contests that will be happening today in an effort to raise funds for rescue organizations helping dogs! You won’t want to miss it.

There will even be K-9 Demonstrations.

The festival, presented by Agway of Cape Cod, will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Drummer Boy Park in Brewster. There is a $5 entrance fee that will go to help the Brewster Shelter.

Best of all, proceeds support animals at the Animal Rescue League’s Brewster Shelter.

Do you have to have a dog to attend? Not at all! But your attendance and support will help dogs, so you definitely should go. There may be some dog kisses in it for you. :)

How many old canvas, ugly art pieces do you have stacked in a closet or attic somewhere and you have no idea what to do with them? If you’re a dog lover, we have a fantastic DIY project for you today, using old and/or ugly canvas art to simply and cheaply create a beautiful canvas silhouette of your pup!

Big shout out to Karah over at one of our fav DIY blogs, The Space Between Blog, for this super fab make-your-own canvas silhouette of your dog idea!

Here’s the finished product below.

If you don’t have any old, ugly canvases hanging around, Karah actually found two at a second hand store like Goodwill for $2. each, and that’s the only money she spent on this project!

You may need to pay to have a photo of your dog enlarged, or maybe you have access to a photo copier that can enlarge a photo for you – both will work.

Richochet, The Service Dog Turned Surfing Dog, Changing Lives One Person, One Wave at a Time

Richochet is a famous Golden Retriever. She was trained from birth in a special program to be a service dog, but that isn’t what Richochet was meant to be, at least not in the way this service program was training her.

They had to release her from the program.

Richochet loves chasing birds, running in the ocean, and her free spirit could potentially be dangerous to a person with special needs.

THAT was when her wise trainer tuned in to what Richochet was good at, and what she loved. The result is nothing shy of amazing, and it will bring tears to your eyes, so be prepared. This is one of the best inspirational videos we’ve seen.

Once Richochet was allowed to do what she was meant to do, rather than what others wanted her to do, she began to change lives – literally.

There are so many amazing stories about dogs, because dogs truly are amazing, and Richochet’s story speaks not only to how incredible dogs and service dogs are; it carries an underlying truth for all of us…

When we choose what we are meant to be, rather than what others try to make us, something very special happens that could not otherwise — and lives are changed in beautiful, powerful and inspiring ways.

Paws-itively Precious: When This Dog Loses Her Eyes, Canine Siblings Become Her Guides, Literally

Jessica VanHusen’s senior dog, Kiaya a 10-year-old white Akita rescue dog, lost both of her eyes from glaucoma, and gained two guide dogs – her siblings!

VanHusen is a vet tech, living in Waterford, Michigan, and when asked how her two Akitas, Cass, and Keller, took on this role as guide, for their older sibling, she described, “They were kind of bookends to her, they’re not fiercely protective but they’re always touching her. They’re really respectful of her.”

Cass taught himself to lead Kiaya through the yard – something that touched Jessica so deeply, she cried watching him tend to his canine sibling. They are fiercely loyal to their sibling, and what she needs from them.

Jessica noticed Kiaya squinting at her with one eyes, and the veterinarian diagnosed her with glaucoma. Initially medications worked for Kiaya, but once the pain became unbearable, surgery became the only option.

Symptoms of Glaucoma in Dogs:

According to PetMD, approximately 40 percent of dogs with glaucoma will lose their sight, regardless of the treatment which is provided.

Redness of the blood vessels in the whites of eyes

Cloudy appearance at front of the eye

Inflammatory debris visible in the front of the eye

Excessive blinking or squinting

Unresponsive pupils

Recession of eyeball

If your dog has one or more of these symptoms, make an appointment with your vet right away.

    This is a beautiful example of love, loyalty, and adaptation – both by Kiaya’s owner and by her siblings. Special needs dogs can adapt, with love and support.

Woman Refuses to Give Up Dogs For Council Housing Now Lives in Car, What Would You Do?

A former teacher found herself homeless, and when she applied for emergency housing from the UK council, she was told she qualified for her house,b ut would have to part with her dogs in order to get it.

She said no.

As a result, she has been living in her 20-year-old Alfa Romeo for four months in a car parking lot, while desperately trying to find work.

Hillary Barrows is quoted:

“The only place I could stay was my 20-year-old Alfa Romeo.

I decided to drive to Canterbury because the Salvation Army have really helped me and fed the dogs, and there is a public toilet nearby.

There is a £2 a time shower room that I use once a week. The RSPCA have been out to visit the dogs twice and they have no problem living in the car.

I have never been on benefits in my life before, I have a degree I have diplomas. I am in a no-win situation – I don’t want people to feel sorry for me, I just want someone to give me a hand-up.”

What an inspiring story! Brad Croft, CEO of Universal K9, Inc., and his team take shelter dogs (often from high kill shelters), and give them a second chance at life with specialized training as police, bomb, and drug dogs.

Often police departments spend tens of thousands of dollars for pure bred dogs from overseas, specially trained in police and drug or bomb detection – but Brad Croft is changing that – and his organization has already saved more than 100 dogs and trained them for police work.

The dogs are given a second chance at life and taught how to detect drugs and explosives; they are trained in scent tracking and search and rescue work. Once the dogs have graduated, they are welcomed into police departments across the country!

One dog Universal K9 saved is named Sadie. She’s a young mixed breed dog rescued off the street. She became a star pupil in Brad’s program!

FROM STREET DOG to POLICE DOG! 

Brad has stated that the few dogs they are rescuing is a drop in the bucket compared to the number of dogs euthanized in shelters every year, which is incredibly sad. But through support from the community and fundraising they are doing what they can to turn those numbers around.

What an amazing program!
