Apple Pie Bites: Trial and Error
Okay a quick prelude. We came up with this recipe ourselves, so there was quite a bit of trial and error here. So, we also don't have exact measurements.
2 Rolls of pie crust
1 Stick of butter
1 Tbls Cinnamon
3 Tbls Brown sugar
3 Apples
Vegetable oil
As with last time make sure all your ingredients are out and measured. Make sure you let the butter get to room temperature. The next thing you have to do is prep the apples, first thing you have to do is peel them.
Afterward dice them into small pieces. The smaller the better.
(Side note: We tried to take the apples and scoop out a sphere and wrap that in the dough. We realized that the dough would cook faster than the apples so we struck this idea)
Put the butter in a bowl, and mix in the brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix well so the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Mix in the apples, and again make sure they've been distributed throughout the mixture.
The next step is to wrap the mixture in the dough... This is where we had to do some trial and error. The first thing we tried was putting the mixture into the dough and then cutting it, like so:
Okay, so that didn't work. There was no way to fold the edges and the filling fell out. So we decided to cut the dough into pockets, and fill them, and THEN fill them with the mixture, like so:
Once they're filled, crease the edges.
Next take a large sauce pan and fill 2/3s of the way with vegetable oil. Heat it on medium high heat. Oil is too heavy to actually boil, however once it's hot enough there will be small bubbles on the bottom. Put the dough filled with the apple and butter mixture into the heated oil.
Let the dough brown in the oil, flip it over to get both sides. Be careful while cooking, the oil will splatter and it burns. You also have to be careful that your oil doesn't get too hot because then your dough will cook faster than the inside. So don't be afraid to keep adjusting the heat.
I was really happy with the final product. It took us awhile to get there, but after we figured out what worked and what didn't it turned out amazing. I'd love to hear how this worked out for everyone! Let us know :)
I'll leave you with one final thought.
