My introduction

My name is Logan Mclardie and I am a 19 year old event management student at City of Glasgow College.

This blog is to keep up to date on the current and future of technology and gaming side of things. Posting 2x a week consistently about the relevant news.

Technology and gaming are two of my favoured interests, being an avid gamer and using some of the newest technology myself i can give first hand experience to those who may not have the opportunity to access these such things.

Having an interest in gaming and technology while having access to some of the newer things coming out gives me an insider look and even an early look to what's good and what's bad about the newest of equipment, such as the PS5 or the new Razer "Book" laptop. With this knowledge I am able to give a review on whether I personally like the product, the price is appropriate or what i can recommend that is similar to the product itself, saving you time and money.

With this blog I'm hoping at least someone who was not as interested will be captivated by this blog and hope to gain their interest, saying that I will be answering some of the most common questions about technology that some may find confusing.

Then v Now

In 1968, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore founded the pioneering semiconductor company Intel, as well as the first large-scale test of RAND researcher Paul Baran's distributed communication network ARPANET. ARPANET was designed for scientists and researchers to share computers remotely, but soon grew into something far greater: the Internet.

Despite the many advances in technology over the last 50 years, many of the complex and high-performing technologies we use today have their roots in the unprecedented shifts of the late 1960s.

It has been less than a decade since 4G offered wireless speeds of up to 100 megabits per second and now we're seeing the start of the 5G era, which will be as transformative as the Internet itself.

5G will lay the foundation for software-defined infrastructure and carrier-edge computing, and just as 4G - and the Internet before it - it will act as a launching pad for new technologies including virtual reality, remote-controlled robotics, telemedicine, and autonomous vehicles.

Our industry is driven by innovation - we are always coming up with new and improved ways to live and work. Unsurprisingly, this drive for innovation has led to a radically different look for the industry today than it did fifty years ago. A generation ago we saw the first generation of the iconic Chevrolet Camaro Convertible, but today we see the first generation of fully autonomous vehicles. In 1968, a modern data centre with tape drives for primary storage couldn't even compete with the computational power our smartphones possess today. We are now seeing micro data centres powering edge computing, enabling smart cars and smart cities to make more informed decisions.

Technological advancements in medicine

If you were to look at how doctors and professionals in the medical department handled a common cold a hundred years ago to now you would be surprised on how far we have actually came.

3D Printing -

Using 3D printing, medical devices can be designed to fit the exact specifications of a patient, improving compatibility, comfort, and performance. It's also being used to plan surgical procedures. Surgeons will use 3D printed models of the patient's anatomy to personalize preoperative planning instead of unreliable and complicated 2D imaging techniques.

That's just the tip of the iceberg for 3D printing applications. It can eventually be used to: Print human stem cells to grow replacement organs Print skin to replace damaged or burned skin Print cancer cells to study them and test new drugs on them

Nanotechnology -

Nanotechnology is a process in which scientists manipulate and control individual atoms and molecules.

Scientists hope that by harnessing the power of nanomedicine, they can simplify medical procedures, improve treatments, and ultimately save lives. Nanotechnology is currently being used to deliver drugs, heat, light, and other substances to specific types of cells (such as cancer cells) using nanoparticles. As a result of this technique, less damage is done to healthy cells in the body and disease can be detected earlier.

Will the rise of robotics take over normal jobs?

Everyone has seen the movies about robots taking over the world and weirdly enough, we are not that far away from the first fully functioning AI. Robotic arms are taking over jobs such as amazon and warehouse jobs as we speak which in turn is costing thousands of jobs at a time.

Of course this is not coming without retaliation from the hard workers who lost their robs to the perfect robots who can do their job for them. The biggest industries really under threat are retail, business, logistics, automotive, marketing and advertising.

According to the BBC, around 20 million factory jobs will be replaced by robots by 2030.

Although there is a lot of negatives of robots taking over multiple industries there is some pros towards it, the economy will have possibilities to positively grow, money can be out to improve things that are lacking worldwide such as hunger and climate change.

The fear of machines taking over most sectors of work is still a work in progress but with the advancements the smartest and richest seem to be making then who knows what the next 10 years will hold for us all.

Using technology to ease the modern times

One of the most common thing people struggle with is the language barrier when travelling abroad.

Over the last few decades voice recognition apps have been gradually getting better and better at understanding and giving accurate translations. With apps such as iTranslate and even google translate getting better year by year, not speaking the local language can be less difficult than you can imagine. Whip out your phone, say what you want to say into it and it'll translate it to the language you're desiring.

More and more tourist attractions are creating technological advancements into the futuristic industry. Screens with maps and attractions you can change to your language to better your understanding to again, apps that do it for you. The more places that introduce this to modern times the easier it will be to bring people into the country.

Personally I speak some Portuguese but not fluent, so having something at my fingertips to ease the "lost in translation" awkward moment is an absolute life saver.

Bringing people together is something that 2020 really didn't offer, using something as small as an app to help talk to people speaking a different language can be heavily influential worldwide if more people jumped onboard I personally think language barriers can be supressed so you can genuinely go anywhere in the world and be able to understand and speak freely.

Virtual Reality

· With everything around us becoming more futuristic as the years go on, the gaming community is rapidly adapting to the new generation of technology. With things like virtual and augmented reality getting better and more realistic as the new generations close in we can really not predict what its going to be like even five years down the line.

· VR (virtual reality) is becoming more apart of the future as we know it, with VR being used across multiple platforms such as architecture and crimes. The top end of VR is seeing people use it to react past murder scenes to try and solve unsolved cases and in a few situations its actually worked. With the richer end of society starting to use VR you will see new things such as VR glasses, or better known as Tony Stark glasses. These super glasses have been found to be like the real thing in the movies, having 3d blueprints, assisted AI (artificial intelligence) built into them etc.

My recommendation of VR headsets is the Oculus Quest 2. This headset is a great value for money being valued at around £299 for the 128GB version on the Official Oculus Website. Other websites are selling this amazing VR headset but for unfortunately a higher price.

This all in one headset is ahead of its time with 1832×1920px per eye, a 72Hz refresh rate and a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Platform CPU this is absolutely worth the money.

Comparing this to cheaper alternatives you can find on websites such as Amazon and eBay, you will find much more problems such as slow connectivity, the refresh rate being much slower and even strain on the eye from not sustainable glass, plastic used for the lens.

All in all I recommend the Oculus Quest 2 as its a great price for the quality of the product.
