You stabbed my heart with a dagger made of thoughtless words
Michael Faudet (via unfocusedminds)
Death would be an awfully big adventure. | Drabble.
The sleeping bundle jolted upright on the bed, sleepy blue eyes darting around the darkened room in search for threat but found none, the silence hung thickly in the air which made her acutely aware just how lonely she felt. Her brows furrowed, completely at a lost as to what had caused her to wake up so suddenly or why she was suddenly sweating despite feeling cold and her breathing so heavy.
The confused Laela got her answer as she doubled over and groaned loudly, clutching her abdomen when she felt a sharp pain shoot through her as if something was tearing her from the inside out. ”Oh my g-god..” She stammered as the attack subsided but was still present, like a million needles were pricking her intestines trying to rupture it. The pain… It was beyond anything she has ever experienced making her eyes water and her throat began tightening up, making it even harder to breath. Her body’s immediate reaction was to cough to clear the airway, and cough she did; so hard that it felt like her lungs were about to pop out.
When she managed to stop coughing, she felt warm liquid trickling down her chin and she wiped it away. She gasped at what she saw then she began panting like a dog dying of thirst and her hands shook intensely. Panic gripped tightly onto her heart at the sight of crimson against her pale fingers. Laela didn't understand what had brought on such pain but it sure explained why she had been feeling out of sorts since late afternoon, which she shrugged off as exhaustion and hoped it was merely that. Her breathing slowed as the pain faded away, and just when she thought it was nothing, she doubled over while holding her abdomen just groaning when the pain came back with a vengeance.
Fat droplets made their way down her face as she tried as hard as she could to endure the sharp clawing feeling inside her, clutching her shirt so tight that her knuckles turned white and sweat formed across her forehead. It was too much for a weakling like her to take, and the pain was different this time - earlier on it was a sudden pain but it stops for a while before hitting her again, but now it was continuously stabbing her. She knew then something was wrong, what exactly she wasn't sure but Laela knew she needed help before it got worst. She didn't dare think of what could be worst than this agony but she had a faint idea of what it could be.
"W-what... W-What is hap-p.. pening.." The broken doll stammered, reaching for her phone on the bedside table with trembling hands knowing that she needed to call for help. But just as her fingers were inches away from help, a sharp pain shot up her sides and she started with a cry forward just pushing her phone and the bottle of whiskey tumbling onto the ground. The bottle landed with a crash before she followed suit, crying out when the broken glasses cut into her skin though it was a mere prickle compared to whatever it was tearing up her insides. There she was on the ground in a heap of sobbing mess, the clawing feeling continued making its presence known, making her sputter up more blood onto the marbled floor, staining it crimson from her cuts as well.
Gathering whatever strength she had left, she reached for her cellphone but it was just a hair too far away from her fingers. "N-No..." Another groan left her lips along with a sob, she wondered why life was this cruel to her. It was bad enough that she was in so much agony but of course things had to be harder than it already was for her. Laela struggled hard but she managed to get herself up on her elbows, crawling towards her phone and caring not that the glasses ebbed deeper into her skin, her mind focused on one thing. Laela cried harder, groaning and clutching her shirt tighter as the action merely aggravated her pains even more but still she forced herself to pull her phone closer to dial a number she knew by heart without even intending to.
The dialling tone seemed to go on forever, the wait driving her insane along with the sharp stabbing in her abdomen and her hand began trembling like a leaf with the effort of holding the phone close. Then she heard his voice and she let out a ragged breath in relief, it was like a light at the end of the dark tunnel. But then her heart clenched painfully when she realized it was just a recording. He didn't answer her call. Again. "C-Charles.... Help m-me... It.. H-Hurts..." Laela stammered, her voice soft as she tried to speak clearly through the tightening of her throat. Her vision began to blur as her head began to spin, she could barely feel her phone when she caught it and her breathing was ragged. There was no telling how she knew it but she did, she could feel her life slipping through her fingers like wisps of smokes through solids.
"I-I'm... S-Sorry... A-All I.. want is... W-Want.. to s-see you smile... A-At me.. And.. H-hear your v-voice and.. laugh..." Her weak voice was cut off as and she groaned loudly before letting out a cry of anguish. The pain reached a new height - it wasn't tearing her up from the inside any more, something was ripping her apart an inch at a time. "Want... To s-see you... One.. l-last time... " Her voice trailed off until all she could manage was manic panting in between pants and groans. How ironic that after all the painful lonely days she has endured, this was how her life would end - laying in a pool of her own blood in the guest room of her home. Alone.
Laela curled up further into herself while clinging onto her shirt as if it will keep her in this world any longer, she was sobbing as she waited for the eternal darkness to come swallow her whole. All those times where she wished for death, a selfish escape from her lonely life, she wanted to take them all back. She would give up anything just for another day, one chance to see Charles and perhaps see Michael again. She never even got to be happy, not even once and she will never know what it's like to be loved in return - to have someone hold her like she meant something to them. She sputtered up more blood after choking on it and she gasped for air, her lungs slowly began caving in on itself. "Laela!?"
The rough male voice tore her away from the darkness, but she couldn't lift her head nor respond other than groan softly. It wasn't the man she had wanted to see so desperately - it was Preston and currently, he was her saving grace. "What the hell happened!?" The man didn't give her much time to gather her voice before he was barking orders at someone else before he started sprinting in a direction she knew not of. Laela felt him scooping her off the damp and cold floor making her whimper as the action hurt her more, but he cradled her like one would with a sleeping child. "You're going to be fine Laela. We're bringing you to the hospital and everything is going to be fine." Her fingers curled into his crisp shirt holding on for dear life literally as she began choking up more blood and staining his white shirt with her blood. "Don't let go. You're going to be fine. Everything is going to be fine."
The brunette wanted to believe in her bodyguard's words, so much, but she could feel the cold settle in, gripping her tightly like a snake and there was no chance for her. "C-Cold..." She stuttered as her entire body began to shake uncontrollably as the man's arms around her tightened. "P-Prest... Am n-not ready to g-go... N-Never... Got to b-be happy... Haven't f-found someone... Who l-loves me.." The wife to be began panting and gasping for air, her throat tightened making it harder to breathe and stars began dancing in her vision of the world darkening. There was no more time for her. It's all coming to an end. "T-Tell Charles… I’m s-sorry and.. T-that I..”
The broken woman doubled over, crying loudly as a million knives went through her and then slumped against Preston's chest like a rag doll. “Tell.. H-him.. I.. I’ll a-always.. Love…..” Her voice trailed off as her eyelid drooped but she clung on with whatever strength she had left but she was losing feeling in her fingers, their grip loosening on the damp fabric and dropping onto her lap. But there was nothing left for the dark haired dreamer; she was to leave without so much as a glimpse of her fiancé's face. All she would be greeted with is the cold and dark hallway leading to her demise.
Idly she wondered what would be waiting for her after the end of this life, if she'd be able to see God and question him, why he'd put her all those heartache just to take her away without so much a taste of happiness. Then she wondered how everyone's life would be - perhaps everyone will fare better; Charles will no longer have a thorn in his side, no one would ever have to listen to her whine and her parents... They wouldn't have a disappointment for a daughter. Everyone would be better off and happier without her.
Faintly she heard someone calling for her, so many unfamiliar voices telling her to hold on for her own sake and Laela really wanted to, so much. But there was no strength left in her fingers to cling on to life, nor was there any left in her heart. Death would be an adventure far too big for someone as small as Laela Steele, but it was one she had no choice but to take.
I got some things to take care of...
Sonny gave the woman a curt nod. “I can’t make any promises Laela” He knew that there was a big chance that he wouldn’t come home at all. This mission was idiotic and stupid, but he had to do it. With a sigh he softened his features a little, and took a few steps towards here. “You take care of Charles, alright? And…if something happens to me…Charles has my Will, so make sure that it gets to the people who are supposed to have it, alight?” He blinked and his face went back to the cold hard emotionless mask that he knew he’d be wearing for a long time now. “just…dont do anything stupid, k?”
"Just try at least." Laela nodded and smiled at the man's response. She did not mind if he rather not make her any promises and honestly, she preferred it that way because she did not know how many more broken promises she could take until it was she who broke. Her heart did a flip at the mention of her fiance's name as it always does before dying just a little. "I promise to take care of Charles and the family with all my might. And if anything happens, I myself will make sure the people get your will. Don't worry, I'll never break my promises." And that was the truth - while everyone around her did not, she made sure to even if by the end of the day she was the one crumbling.
In all honesty she hated the hard and emotionless expression on his face, seeing it almost everyday from her own fiance but she said nothing. A soft hollow chuckle left her lips and she nodded, though she knew this was a request she was going to find hard to keep. Not knowing what else to do or when she would see the man again, she took another step forward and wrapped her arms around him in a gentle hug. "Even though you don't exactly see me as a friend, know that you are to me and I hope you'll come back safe." She murmured before pulling away to cup his cheek, taking one last look at him before she walked away. "Good bye Sonny.. I'll remember you... Just like everyone who leaves me."
Chloe chuckled hollowly. “Yeah…me too…at least sober today.” This was true. After a restless night sleep, she woke up to a sobering realization. She was out of booze. This type of situation wasn’t uncommon, but today was different. Today she didn’t feel like going out to get more. Even with her ‘connections’ it was getting harder and harder to get cashiers to ring her up. She must look that bad. There was something else there too, something deep down inside that she couldn’t quite put her finger on, telling her to leave it be, not take that sip. It was only after she started feeling the withdrawal that she understood that it was just another form of self sabotage.
Chloe looked to the untouched plate. It didn’t look appetizing, not that anything would most likely at this stage in withdrawal, but, she didn’t want to upset her friend. ”Yeah…a little bit…thanks” She weakly pulled the plate over to her side of the table and tentatively pick up her fork with a fiercely shaking hand. It took effort, but she managed to get her hand to cooperate long enough to make it to her mouth. It was almost immediately that her stomach began to turn. She could feel the little color in her cheeks drain and she quickly set the fork down with a loud thud. Sitting back in her chair, she closed her eyes, willing the small bits of salad to stay down. With enough effort they did. Chloe opened her eyes, wiping a stray tear with her shaky hand. “Sorry…my stomachs been acting up since this morning…” Her embarrassment was reaching a critical level. How could she bring someone into this? Into the nightmare that she had been living in for months now? She didn’t even know if she wanted or could be saved anymore, and here she was, dragging someone else into her mess.
Funny that the first time she met the blonde was when they were both drunk off their heads and were blurting about their lives to each other. Yet now that they were sober, both were silent almost as if they weren't sure what to talk about. Perhaps the fault lied with her but she finds it hard to speak suddenly, dwelling more in her messy thoughts than anything. Though Laela couldn't help but smile when her friend began picking at her untouched salad. "Please, eat. Or else it'll just be a waste." She murmured, suddenly embarrassed to admit that food had often gone to waste when she ordered them because she had no one to give them to. Not Ferdi or Sonny since they both avoided her like the plague, nor Charles since he wants nothing to do with her. Her throat tightened as the loneliness began to grip at her heart which she was too familiar to her.
Laela cleared her throat and straightened, forcing herself to pretend like always to be the perfectly happy wife to be. But her brows furrowed as she watched Chloe turn completely pale, her eyes clenched shut as if fighting down the small bite of salad and it merely made the brunette worry more. "Don't apologize.. It's fine.." There was something wrong and she wanted to help her because in some weird way, the petite blonde reminded Laela of herself so many years ago. Given that the young girl must have had a darker past but that merely fanned her desire to help, just like Michael did with her. Gently she placed her hand over Chloe's trembling hand and offered a warm smile hoping to show the young girl that she was there to help. "Chloe, no matter what happens or whatever you need - I'm here for you. I'll help you.."
I let your promises ruin me.
Six Word Story #96 by absentions (via kempsss)
Chloe could hear everything that Laela was saying, but it was like it didn't register. The things that were coming out of the brunette's mouth were rational, were true, but Chloe's mind couldn't even begin to believe that they were true of her. How could a girl of only eighteen, that was unloved by her own flesh and blood, sold to be a sex slave, condemned by fear and anger, a slave to the bottle, unable to comfort the one person that had always been there for her and wanting nothing more than to disappear...how does that girl deserve happiness? How does that girl deserve to be loved and cared for? Chloe couldn't believe she deserved any of it. Believing meant hoping, and hoping only brought disappointment. Chloe could only nod at the brunette beside her. Her mind was racing, screaming obscenities only she could hear. She couldn't bring herself to argue with her new friend, she was exhausted and it wasn't like it matter either way. After a long silence Chloe looked up from her coffee cup, determined to take the spot light off of herself. It was clear talking didn't help the situation and she didn't want to upset Laela knowing she just wanted to help. "How's um, everything with you...since that night in the bar?
Laela sighed heavily before she took a sip of her cold coffee. The silence that came from the blonde was more unnerving that she thought it would be. While she was familiar with being comforted, she however wasn't exactly good at doing it and she only hoped that she helped Chloe a little bit. Then again how could she, when she herself hardly believed in the words anymore. Her hopes of ever being happy were often crushed by the hands of one man to the extent where she gave up ever hoping anymore. It was easier that way. But it should be different for the young girl, she looked too young for her to not have at least a touch of goodness in her life and Laela will try whatever she can to make sure it happens.
It surprised her when Chloe looked up, but the surprised faded away when Laela finally saw how her cheeks looked sullen and there was no longer light in those pale blue eyes. A lump began forming in her throat and she idly wondered if she was looking at a reflection of herself. "I've been... Sober." She chuckled awkwardly at her horrible attempt at lightening things and tucked a stray lock behind her ear. "I wanna say that things have been better but that'd be a lie. I guess things has just been the same and I'm dealing with it one step at a time." her voice grew softer towards the end of her sentence as if she didn't believe in what she was saying. True enough she didn't because waking up every day to the same thing was one of the hardest things she has to deal with and sometimes she wish it would all just end.
When her eyes fell to the untouched plate of salad, she turned to Chloe with a gentle smile. "Are you hungry? The food here is amazing, especially their dessert. You should have some. They say that chocolate can make a person feel better so we should test out that theory My treat."
The courage it took to get out of bed each morning to face the same things over and over was enormous.

I got some things to take care of...
Not sure when I’ll be back.
There it was again, another person leaving her and perhaps she was growing numb to it already because all she could manage was a small nod. "I don't know why you're telling me this, but I hope you're going to be safe and come home in one piece."
Chloe welcomed the brunette's touch. She closed her eyes, tears threatening to fall. "But...what if I don't want to come back...what if I don't think I should...I don't deserve it" There were so many things stacked against her. And all of these things just made her brain scream /they'd all be better off/. "I thought everything would be okay...that my past didn't define me. Yes, I have issues that I wanted to resolve...but, then Dmitri came back...and he told me about my mother...and he was different...and he kicked Sonny out and...I didn't know how to help Kira so I just stayed away...and then Medusa's burned down, so I lost my job...so I had to do the only thing I knew how...and now...it's just all too much..." Chloe was rambling again, everything coming out even before she had time to think about whether it should or not.
"Even though you think you don't deserve to come back or to be happy even, you should know that you do." Her voice was soft as she spoke and there was a weak smile on her face. Though Laela wasn't sure if she was just comforting Chloe alone or herself too. "Someone once told me that everyone deserves to be happy, and that means you. Things may be hard and complicated, but have hope that there's going to be a rainbow at the end of this storm." They weren't her words but she remembered someone who once cared for her telling her that when she was at her low point and she hoped it would help her new friend.
Laela blinked at the news she was given. She barely understood anything but she knew a few names, one being Sonny and then the other being Medusa's. "Hey hey...." She cooed almost as if she were talking to a terrified puppy, her grip on the petite blonde's hand tighten. "It's going to be ohkay. I know it may get too much, but you're not alone now and I'll help you anyway I can."
Chloe chuckled ominously at Laela’s question. “Simple…I wasn’t supposed to be here…my mother never wanted me” Her voice trembled a bit at the mention of her mother. She had to stop and clear her throat before she continued again. “She uh….she was out, smashed out of her mind one night, spouted her mouth and got into trouble with some random bar fly delinquent….9 months later…here I am. And she never let me forget it….and now recently I found out that there really wasn’t a smidgen of motherly love in her at all…she’s the reason I’m here…she…sold me to pay a fucking debt…and now, here I am.”
Chloe’s hands shook more. Why did talk of her mother still feel like someone was ripping out her heart and stabbing it over and over? She knew the truth, she knew her mother wasn’t capable of loving her, the hope she had that her mother would one day turn up, wanting her, was dashed, so why then couldn’t she just drop it, get past it?
"And…well….because of recent events and activities…I’ve lost touch with…my family. I’ve ignored the one person that’s been there…because I don’t think I deserve her…and now…I just wish I could disappear. I’m…so far gone…I don’t know if I’ll ever come back…" She heaved as a sob tried to break its way through her body.
While she had initially wanted Chloe to talk to her, Laela was not prepared for the news that she would given and no one would ever be really. She reached out and place her hand atop her broken friend's, offering her as much comfort as she could while she processed what she was hearing. "God Chlo... I'm sorry." Her heart clenched and a fury began to fester in her heart. How could a mother do something like that? What happened to maternal instincts and love?
Laela's hand tightened over Chloe's when she felt it tremble harder which was surprising because it was bad before already but still, Laela offered as much comfort as she could. "You can come back.. If you want to then and with a little help then definitely. Plus I have hope that you'll be able to stand up once again." She could feel tears prickle behind her lids but she held them back, determined to remain together for the petite blonde. "There'll be no disappearing. I finally have a friend and I am not letting you go that easily. No sir."
"Sorry…" Chloe managed as the brunette steadied her trembling hands in hers. She knew all too well the symptoms of withdrawal, and knew without a doubt, this was one of them. A slight hint of anger sparked for a moment, before it quickly faded. How could she fall into the same abyss her mother did?
Chloe could feel the worry radiating from her across the table. Laela wouldn’t make her speak, but wasn’t this why she came out in the first place? To ask for help? For something? After another moment of silence while her mind screamed she spoke. “Have you…have you ever felt like you deserve everything that’s handed to you?…all the bad?…like, because you were never meant to be in the first place…that God is…somehow punishing you?…and you feel so guilty that you welcome the punishment…and then add to it, hoping one day you’ll just disappear and the world will right itself again because the thing that was never meant to be, wont be?”
Laela waved off her apology because there was no need for it, though she did want an explanation to the terrible trembling but wasn't going to press for it knowing that it will just make things worst than it already was. The silence hung between the two woman like a thick curtain that would smother them both alive if neither of them were to cut through it. Judging from the looks of things - the dark haired woman wouldn't be the one to break it first. All she did was swirl her almost empty cup of coffee and stared at her untouched salad that was still beckoning for her to taste, her stomach growled in response but she did nothing.
When Chloe did speak it made her eyes widen and her heart stop. There was no way the petite blonde was talking about Laela when they just knew each other. But yet the words cut through her heart like a warm knife through butter and she had to remind herself to breathe before she spoke. "Y-Yes... i have.." She admitted, there was no point in lying especially if she wanted to help her friend who was currently in her own nightmare. Perhaps there was a true reason for them to have ventured into the same bar on the same night and found each other - they were each other's missing halves. "Why do you say such things?"
Chloe couldn’t concentrate on the snow, or much else for that matter. Her thoughts were scrambled, jumping from one thought to the next, without completing. She looked down at her hands, tightly folded together, trying to erase the emotions that shown so clearly on her hollowed face.
Thankfully her latte arrived and she could focus on that for a few moments. It didn’t take long though for Laela to ask that inevitable question. What was wrong? So much, everything….nothing at all. She looked to Laela, her worried expression making her heart sink, knowing that at least some of that worry was for her. ”I…” She started but couldn’t finish. She suddenly felt embarrassed, worried that maybe this wasn’t the best idea. She barely knew this girl, and although she was nice, and they had become fast friends, she felt bad. Chloe spent a lifetime holding things in so tight she thought they would never escape, and now, for whatever reason, it took everything she had to keep the pain at bay, and wanted nothing more than for someone to come to her rescue, to pick her up, cradle her and tell her everything was going to be okay.
Words wouldn’t come. Chloe felt sick, with worry, embarrassment and most likely withdrawal. She eyed the steaming latte in front of her and unclenched her fists to cradle the warm cup. It took concentration to keep from spilling as her hands shook from a day without her drug of choice.
Her dark brows furrowed at how silent her companion was, and she couldn't help but size her up. Perhaps her memory of the night at the bar was hazy from all the alcohol but she was sure there was something that was definitely off with the blonde and it bothered her. Call it mother instincts or maybe Laela was selfish because seeing Chloe like that gave her the opportunity to forget about her own dilemmas and focus on helping someone else instead. It was one of Laela's secret getaway - worry over someone else till she was so exhausted that she can't think. It was crazy, but it works.
"Chloe..." Her voice was soft, coaxing the petite blonde out of the shell that she seemed to put herself in and she tried to catch her gaze to give her a reassuring smile but failed. She had every mind to ask what was wrong again, but she of all people knew that it was easier to keep it all in than to burden someone with their sorrows. So she sighed and remained silent as she watched the blonde attempt to drink her latte but from the way her hands trembled; chances are she wouldn't manage to. Tentatively the dark haired woman reached out to hold Chloe's hand to steady it while she offered her a reassuring smile. "Careful.."
She could feel how badly the tiny hands shook within her own and it was starting to scare her. Whatever that was going on with her friend was very bad, and Laela was determined to help her out of it even if it would hurt her in the end. "You know I'm here for you.. I won't force you to speak if you don't want to, but know that I'm here for you just like you were for me the other night."
As Chloe began peeling off her layers she could see the worried expression in Laela's face. She knew how she looked, but seeing someone else realize it made her almost embarrassed. She slumped into the chair, barely making eye contact with Laela. The waiter was on her almost immediately and she ordered her usual drink before looking up to meet Laela's gaze. "Man...it's freezing outside" She always went for small talk when she was nervous, even though she knew she was terrible at it.
Laela tried to keep the worry expression off her face by smiling, but then it wasn't exactly the easiest thing to do when worrying about people came to her almost like a second nature. But still she tried, letting Chloe settle into her seat and order herself something warm before she said anything. Questions were on the tip of her tongue - threatening to spill out like a waterfall but she took a sip of her coffee to swallow them back. "Yes it is. But the snow is beautiful though." The brunette mused as her eyes wandered to the window, watching little white puffs fall down onto the ground and momentarily forgetting all that was wrong in her life.
Then she turned back to her petite friend sitting across from her looking like a nervous chipmunk and Laela frowned. "Chloe? What's wrong?"
