thinkin about that code rui and hyun have for the dip, where rui taps hyun if she wants to go lower. and just. thinkin about rui tapping lower, then lower once more, then lower once more, then smiling their little gremlin smile and leaning over to give hyun a surprise peck the second hyun is finally low enough to be in range

and hyun is totally thrown but can't drop rui about it but they do stumble a little, and rui tenses up and grabs hyun's hand on their waist to help stabilize them. and hyun looks down at rui, a little stunned, but then he pulls a silly exaggerated annoyed expression and is like 'what's the big idea, hey???' like, very much playing it up for the bit (which is rui's favorite thing)

and rui throws her head back and laughs and laughs--and hyun laughs too and pulls them both back up to standing and rui giggles into her chest until she finally catches her breath and is like 'okay okay, this one's for real'

and then they do it again for real. but from then on, every once in a while when they do the dip, rui will wink at hyun with the upstage eye and hyun will have to remind herself to stay concentrated and not stick her tongue out at rui in response

an exchange on TikTok that has not left my mind: someone posted a k-pop song that sounded like 90’s/y2k r&b (definitely like a gen 2 song) and asked if anyone could recommend similar k-pop songs and artists. first comment someone said, ‘well it’s not K-pop but this sounds like Mary J Blige or Missy Elliot, so you should check them out.’ original poster says ‘I said I wanted kpop.’

watching clips of the recording behind. I think some people are not understanding how high hyun’s bridge part is. because we know it’s high, of course, but hyun sings high! look at that, hyun is so impressive no you don’t get it it’s a D5! that’s SOPRANO belt territory! that’s the last note of defying gravity! the show-offy high c tenors do at the end of nessun dorma?? this is a whole step higher than that. in fact, hyun goes from that d and steps down to land on that high c tenors work freakin HARD for. you know drowning by woodz? that song is in a-flat. The famous three note melody on ‘breathe’ goes Ab-Bb-C. the highest note in the song is a Db woodz does on a little vocal turn and he usually flips into his head voice for it. Hyun is belting a half step higher than that. Please note, these are all insanely difficult vocal passages in different ways, and I’m not trying to diminish or compare vocal ability here (because vocal ability has many different aspects and range is just one)—I’m just using these examples as a reference to show how freaking HIGH this bridge hyun was tasked with delivering is.

another thing is that, as recently as their last diamonds in the sky cover, hyun was showing the ability to sing a high a and maybe a b, but was straining on those high notes on some of the live recordings people were uploading. so to get a part that asks for a powerful belt a third above your comfortable ceiling? no wonder hyun was stressed beyond belief. its clear that they’ve been working hard before getting into the booth, but it’s also clear to see how difficult it was getting the placement right on those notes.

and that’s not even getting into the live shows, where the mics are on and there’s no second chance!!. to go from a live ceiling of a/b last year, to consistently hitting a high d live multiple times in the last month is crazy work. I just need everyone to understand how wild this kind of growth is.
