I will never be able to understand how it feels to be black in America. Even though I will never be able to fully understand what the black community goes through, the least I can do is stand by them and be an ally. Over these last week, I personally have felt a lot of emotions towards not only what happened with George Floyd but every single person who we have come to know the names of. It’s mostly been a lot of sadness and anger that it has come to this point again. It is not lost on me that the reason we even know of these people is because of things like social media. Growing up, I had somewhat of a mentality that even though I knew being prejudiced against people who are black isn’t okay, i never really felt it was okay for me to speak up and question those who were being racist. That’s where I chose wrong. I chose to not be an ally. To all my white friends, I encourage you to become an ally. Staying silent in a time like this is betrayal. Black lives matter and will always fucking matter.
