Jason Momoa and Taika Waititi at the 2020 Golden Globes
My two favorite Polynesians sharing a honi/hongi. This is EVERYTHING 🥰
For those that don’t know what they’re doing:
Honi (Hawaii) / Hongi (Aotearoa) is a Polynesian greeting in which two people press their noses and foreheads together and inhale at the same time. This allows for the exchange of hā, or the breath of life, between the two individuals. The greeting is both a physical and spiritual connection between the involved parties.
Given that Momoa is kanaka maoli (of native Hawaiian descent) and Waititi is of Māori (indigenous people of New Zealand) descent, it makes perfect sense that this is how they would greet each other. And seeing this greeting and moment captured at a venue as big as the Golden Globes makes my heart so full.
Taika sharing ALL THE INDIGENOUS LOVE!!
“I dedicate this to all the Indigenous kids in the world who want to do art and dance and write stories, we are the original storytellers and we can make it here, as well.” -Taika Waititi, on Jojo Rabbit winning the 2020 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay
He is the first Indigenous director and Māori to win an Academy Award
