EGX 2014: Overview
Video games have been a huge part of our lives since forever. Walking into Earls court in London one thing was clear, videogames transcend age and EGX was the place you could fully geekout and appreciate this amazing artform.
EGX consisted of developer conferences and 2 show floors with playable pre releases, simply a Mecca for the modern gamer. We had 2 days and sampled as much as we could. Below is a short rundown of what we thought.
The Show Floors:
Downstairs were the big boys (Nintendo, Playstation, XBOX) as well as the retro games area (which we loved). Upstairs housed the Inide games, with loads on display; we managed to chat to loads of indie developers and it was here where we had the best time connecting with small hardworking teams and learning about what it takes to make games.
Playsation had a huge presence at EGX. They had the marketing and momentum to make them the stand out company; people were flocking to their stands while XBOX had a smaller presence (but still a strong crowd). There was little XBOX advertising (which was suprising) while the blue glow of Playsation shone with confidence in one of their strongest markets. Sony hands down dominated the scene at EGX that’s for sure.
Nintendo had a good crowd with people flocking to the Mario Kart championships and lapping up the Pokémon merch. Nintendo defiantly had the under 18 market but they still lacked any killer titles on display. Hopefully time will help Nintendo as they continue to build the WiiU library. People still care about this brand and they will bounce back.
AAA Games we played (in no order)
- The order 1866
- The whitcher
- See No evil
- Driveclub
- Valkire (Oculus Rift)
- War Thunder (Oculus Rift)
- WWE 2015
- Farcry 4
- Mortal Combat x
- Alien Isolation
The AAA games that stood out for us were: Alien Isolation, Mortal Combat, The Order 1866. Some demos were better than others depending on development progress. The sleeper hit was Alien, shit scary and something worth checking out.
Indie Games we played (in no order)
- Poncho
- Never Alone
- How to be a tree
- Rive
- Velocity
To be honest we dipped in and out of so many indie games that it is hard to remember, the list above is our standout games. Never Alone looks and plays amazingly and Rive is such a classic little game before it even comes out.
Verdict
EGX was amazing, not one of the biggest hitters (such as E3 etc) but for us brits it is great we get to see all these games. For us the Indies’ stole the show and we are firmly in the era of the indie developers. There is a real resurgence with simple, sun and creative games and we cant wait where this takes gaming.
This is a whistle stop tour of EGX 2014 and we plan on brining you more detailed analysis in the coming weeks once it has all sunk in.
