... but tbh, whilst i really liked the movie... and i'm cool with it being unlike the book... i do kind of wish that victor wasn't so straightforwardly the real monster and that the creature was more morally ambiguous rather than just misunderstood. i think because i really resonated with the theme of social alienation affecting one's personality - to the point that the creature does become murderous.

and the thing is i know that guillermo can do a morally complex lead character who can even be a Romantic Lead and Sympathetic because of thomas 'i have been plotting to kill you, i did murder my previous wives, and i do love you' sharpe.

this is not really a strong emotion that i have though because ultimately i think that del toro did what appealed to him personally and if he had done otherwise the movie might not have been quite so effective or earnest. and sometimes moral ambiguity is shockingly lacking irl. i'm just like - this is what I, personally, would have preferred. probably.
