America was built on genocide. Not just the USA, all of America. I’m indigenous American, Inka, this makes me in an odd place where I’m both the child of an immigrant, and native. I can’t speak too well for the rest of the Americas, but Peru is one of the few places that has managed to retain even a little indigenous culture, and even then it is suppressed, and looked down upon even by other indigenous peoples. This sentiment extends outside of how the Peruvian world sees us too, most of the Latino Americans targeted by ICE are targeted specifically because we have indigenous blood and features that show that. Indigenous people are still being unjustly treated, with USA tribes having their lands stolen and shrunk and shrunk till they have nothing, to the forced sterilization of women which is still happening, of which includes my tia. Furthermore, slavery had left generations of impact, again not just in the USA but Latin America as well. America was built off the back of enslaved peoples, a history which people have just started to acknowledge which the current administration is now trying to once again burry. Anti-blackness has been on the rise now globally, but especially in the USA.
I don’t hate the USA. My mama came here because she needed safety and this country provided it to her, along with incredible opportunity and a family and love. She is the American dream, we are the American dream. But this dream was built by shakers and protestors and people who didn’t take no for an answer. We need to work together and find community and aim upwards with our punches, and we can fix this. More perfect union or whatever. But the first step is acknowledgment, and I sure as hell haven’t seen enough of that recently.
