The forum - illustration event
The event in the forum was a really lovely day and was so exciting seeing to everyones tables come together !
Overall, i think our table was successful and got some really positive attention from people. The stickers and flyers went down well and were basically all gone by the end. I think by giving out stickers was also a great way to advertise our table. We also all decided all wear rain ponchos and jackets to match our tables which i think was a real cute touch! Also the thunder noise makers worked great and intrigued people to have a go, which the noise got peoples heads turning to our table.
Some things i wish we had included, after playing and looking at others tables, were more interactive parts to our table. We had the instruments, but would of been nice for the audience to collaborate on something together. Also because lots of other peoples tables were interactive peoples spent more time there, which may have affected the amount of people visiting our table. Another point that i realised was the audience enjoyed our table more when we explained our idea to them and what we are trying to say with our display. Talking to people about our idea was really nice and to see peoples excited reactions made me happy.
I think our group expected younger people at the event, which i think our table slightly caters to more . Some of the older people didn’t really want to interact with us and make weather sounds. Overall though i think it was a positive day and was so cool to see everyones else’s finished tables.
Group Letter promo flyer
The letter our group made for the flyer, we doodled lots of images that are related to weather.
Incorporating storms name into the table display
From our feedback we where told that the table needed the names added of our storms to it for more context. I decided to incorporate it into barbs knitted storm. I feel like this works well because it adds to the effect and theme of weather and is also informative to her name.
Final flyers/top trumps
For our flyers we got our group together to sort out the layout and ideas. We decided this layout and to have parts of our table cloths patterns on the back, to mimic a top trump card. We decided to all write a little comedic paragragh about out storms and add some facts like wind power, damaged caused ect. I couldn't be there with my group when printing the flyers but i think they turned out good.
Top trump layout ideas
Commonly on top trump card they have a design on the back of the card so that is something we can look into doing and also adding categories.
Image development for top trump/flyer
This is some plans and final image for out groups flyer. I wanted to really catch barbs old lady side and make the image humorous but still illustrate weather. I feel i achieved this in my final image (last image). i used a mixture of media, pro markers, fine liners, oil pastels and watercolour to give the image more texture for the stormy background. Also i feel i illustrated Barbara well, really bringing her alive more in this image by giving her more emotive facial features.
Group weather poster.
For our group poster we chose to take an abstract approach looking into patterns from weather charts. We wanted our poster to link with the base of our table display, we used the same fabric and printing technique for the patterns, the only big change from tht was we used vibrant colours which mimic the ones on weather charts. Overall, I think our poster illustrates our theme weather quite well and we got good feedback during our crit. The only thing we said may be adding our storms names on the poster to link it with our personifying storms idea, however personally I like how the poster is very abstract and I don't really feel it needs the names on there.
Nearly finished table and feedback
Our group table so far for our crit We got some really good feedback and reactions to our table, it seemed people really liked our humours take on weather with how we have given storm personalities and made them into their own little characters. Our idea has adapted and i feel we have taken on board lots of suggestions that were give to us on our last group crit.
People like how our table was very visually interesting and had lots of things to look at and pick up. The thunder instruments went down really well and people were intrigued by them. Which as a team we will make more instruments for around the table to create different noises. Emily and Matthew suggested we do a weather performance maybe every hour or so and clear the stickers from the table and as a group play the instruments for 5 minuets or so. This adds impact and attention to our table, acts as a tutorial for audience member to get involved with the instruments and adds to our weather theme overall.
One little problem was that people were unsure of what they could touch, and because our display isn't the most stable this could be a problem with when we open up to the public. Our tutors mentioned maybe leaving a boarder around our 3D display, as its further away it may take people urge to touch? And putting instruments stickers and leaflets nearer the edges of the table to indicate to people they can touch and take these objects. i feel we will take this approach when finally setting our table up in the forum.
For the flyers and stickers they said they would like to see them laid out in a more interesting way maybe. and suggested the flyers maybe be slightly smaller that a5 so its easier to engage and take away. Which i feel out group will look into these and down size our flyers to a6 when making them.
Sticker designs
Stickers which people can take on the day of the event, each person in our group made stickers which linked with our storm and our characters. I think the variety and having different styles and techniques with making our images works really well. It's shows each person touch in the project and clearly shows collaboration and each persons skill. I feel as well it adds for character to our dolls, gives an election or team feel like campaigns election stickers. Above shows all teams sticker designs mine our the storm Barbara designs. I feel stickers are a great way to engage audiences also to spread the word get people talking and asking about our work.
I wanted my sticker designs to link very closely to my doll, which I had the idea of having Barb’s face as a sticker, some sticker are humours ‘ don't mess with barb’ and some are informative ‘over 100 schools closed’.
Weather sounds
This is a thunder maker i bought to create weather sounds for the public to use.
Our tables layers
Thinking of our table in layers. We have made a base for our table made from blue fabric and used cardboard shapes and a roller to print: mimic weather map chart like images and patterns. We wanted to keep the base very basic and monotone, also the 3D tree ( made by Beth ) , bus (made by Lucy ) and school which I made, are also very basic by using just back card and small white details. This is so our storm characters and the wire and thread, which symbolises the wind and storms, are the main focus of the table and stand out to the audience.
Storm Barbara - final doll
I'm overall really happy with how storm Barbara turned out, I wanted the doll to be quite humorous as I pictured storm Barbara and an old grump lady who shows her wraith by knitting storms to destroy towns. I stuck to a very basic colour pallet with blues and white, colours which clearly connote rain and clouds, then small spots of red for her lips and earrings, which I think add to the personality of the doll. 'Barb wouldn't leave the house with her red lippy'. It also constraint against the blue and adds to make the doll more bold and stand out a little more. I wanted the big bushy white locks, which is barbs hair to look stereotypically like granny's hair and also to illustrate a clouds, which from the back of her head I think looks quite like a sky. I still need to make her some knitting needles, which she'll use to create her storm around a school ( storm Barbara closed down over 100 schools).
