This is the same animation from before, only I went through the effort of trying to apply sound design to it. This is a new skill that I wanted to explore on my own, as I know it’ll be a key skill in my animation development. The sound effects I used were pulled from various locations such as the BBC sound resource, and youtube. I wasn’t sure where the best places to pull sound effects from were, but I believe these worked well enough for it.
The first step I wanted to do was find a good ambient track for the background. I don’t believe this is necessary, but I didn’t want the sound effects to be isolated by silence - I wanted to build an atmosphere of semi-reality. The ambience I used was that of a small crowd talking in a big room, something unobtrusive and mindless. It also seemed most fitting - while there’s not a lot of context to the piece, it makes more sense for this kind of environment showing up than, say, forest ambience. I think it does the job of setting the scene.
When deciding on the effects I used, I focused on assuming the floor was a hard floor. For this, I would need solid sounding footsteps and a good thwack when the body hits the floor. Additionally, I wanted a softer sound as the ‘lil dude settles into rest at the end, like a muffled sliding sound. It doesn’t show up very well accompanied by the harder sound of the shoes resting too, but the subtlety makes it more believable I feel.
It’s not the most complex piece of SFX work, but it’s a start! It was an interesting process choosing the sounds I wanted, and I think I chose some good ones! It makes the animation so much richer and more engaging than before, which I really like about it.
