Final cushion session

in this time i had the entire day to finish my cushion, i began by completing the rest of my hand embroidering. i ran out of the cream thread so i decided to add a contrasting brown that still managed to look in keeping with the earthy feel. This part took most of my time and required consistently high effort as one misplaced stitch would ruin the symmetry of the circle. the next part of my process was assembling the cushion, beginning with overlocking the edges. i then sewed the two back pieces, hemming the parts that faced the outside. After that i attached the parts inside out and sewed a seam along the edges. Finally, i turned the cushion inside out and stitched along the edge leaving a 1.5 cm border.

Cushion - day 2

In this session I managed to create a second circle, overlapping to give a chaotically organised appearance. I decided to leave my dye as I will not have enough time to restart the whole process. I believe with the embroidery the print will look less blended together.

Tess Daley

the sewing project the brief was to design and create a bodice that is inspired and made for the Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Dale

She is well known for wearing bold velvet pant suits, jackets dresses and vibrant prints.Tess prides herself for her love of fashion and states that she, "loves the art of dressing up and it was a dream come true to create my capsule collection" her outfits are statement pieces.

For the sewing bee I decided I was going to choose a strong colour palette that reflected her style,and fabric that could hold shape/structure. I decided to use an open ended zip to attach the bodice instead of buttons as Tess’ outfits predominantly sport zips, I also feel more comfortable using zips.

Depending on timings I may adjust the bodice to be one shouldered as that is another common neckline tess flaunts.

Final cushion outcome-day 1

In today’s session I cut out my cushion pieces using the pattern blocks. The blocks were 16”x16” however I added a 1.5cm seam allowance and a 1.5cm space for a border. I began to dye my fabric but struggled achieving the print I wanted which was on my samples. I had to cut out new cushion parts as some of the dyeing left them unsalvageable.

She specialises in the area of printmaking, creating pieces such as books and limited edition prints. She has produced signature techniques that she has named “Matrix Formatting” “Multiplexing” and “Low Relief Screen Printing in her silk screened works and “MultiSperse Dye Sublimation” in her fabric works, using disperse dyes on synthetic fibres. Her current work explores contemporary post-graffiti, socio-political and environmental issues. Some of the additional techniques she uses to create her complex multi-layered artworks on natural and/or synthetic fibres include dyeing, discharge, stencilling, stamping, hand painting, digital imaging, dye sublimation and silkscreen printing.

I don't enjoy her works as much as other print makers, however i like the use of earthy and autumnal colour palettes, i also find the layering to be visually appealing and creates an offbeat effect.

contextual research

I found these images on google, both use foiling within their designs. the orange cushion has a very ornate use of foil in comparision to the grey one which uses the full coverage. I like the colour schemes in the yellow one, the golds and the yellows are very complimenting. it follows a similar scheme to my ideas for my cushion. I find the grey to be too cold and monochromatic. the yellow Is the the most geometric and follows out topic using repeated motifs and simplistic shapes. the overall look is balanced

Helen bullock

Hellen is a fashion illustrator based in London, her silhouettes are strong and sharp. she thrives on the freedom of illustrating.

Her prints are bold, and strong in colour, and illustrations are unique, at times capturing strength and beauty others joyful awkwardness. All artwork is created by hand, maintaining an air of freedom and spontaneity of her designs.

I find Hellen’s drawings to be quirky and unusual however still relay a clear message involving shape and texture. i would like to reference and take inspiration from her drawings within my own future illustrations.

Foiling

heat transfer printing photocopy technique:

-photocopy your design into black and white(make dark as possible)

-ink photocopy using pre-painted (disperse dye) sheets

-make waste print (newsprint)

-print onto synthetic fibre

-continue to add either foil adhesive and bondaweb, apply foil and heat press. 

I wasn’t impressed by my outcomes with foiling as the lines were rough and lacked sharpness, the foil was also hard to keep from moving about before heat pressing, resulting in lacking spaces. Next time I would develop my foil technique to create more successful samples with better definition.

Daniel Egneus

Daniels work can be described as lucid, dreamy and vibrant. His illustrations reflect his exiting inner mind. With no formal education except for life itself, Daniel sees everyday life and art as one inseparable whole. His work is an expression of his colourful and rich life in Milano and Rome, Egneus’ work is inspired and filled with friends and not least his daydreaming, which finds its way into his work, inspiring us with its beauty and depth.

i enjoy how his designs intermingle between vibrancy and subtle shapes.

Zips and button holes

i found zips to be relatively straight forward, and the process was was simple to grasp. it involved tacking, creating standard seams and top stitching to finish. button holes were a mmore complex process, and involved folding and measuring seams in relation to button hole placement, which i found complicated.

in future uses of these methods i would focus on creating a more presentable finish and making sure all parts are symmetrical.

in this session i developed a moodboard for my final cushion design. All the dimensions and design elements are on the board. i enjoyed creating this board as it felt similar to illustrating. I feel my design is clear to understand and would be effective in relating to my geometrics topic.

Heat transfer printing

I found heat printing to be effective in producing a clear and vibrant print. I didn’t enjoy how bright the resulting prints came out in comparison to my original designs. However, if I had done repeating prints using the same design base then I feel the prints would eventually be more muted.

My most successful print is the layered shapes, as they are clean and contrasting in colour, which I believe results in a professional finish.

Mark making and fashion illustration.

To create my illustrations I used unconventional patterns made from geometric ink markings.I cut them up and formed clothing designs.

We used dramatic and contrasting colours to create vivid and striking designs.i didn't encounter any major problems when forming my designs, as it was very much an experimental and individual process that allowed for strange creativity.

to further develop my illutratstions I could look at creating more markings to use for my final cushion, and experiment with more combinations. 

I created an individual piece, inspired by my mark makings and fashion illustrator Daniel egneus, who specialises in scratchy and rough finished drawings.
