My boyfriend and I have been together for 5 years and we're best friends. We're both Christians and have been for a long time. Today he told me that he feels conflicted over having feelings for another person while being with me. This is not the first time this has happened, but he's never acted on it. He thinks that we should break up so he can figure things out, but I don't want to lose him. Do you have any words of advice or encouragement on this? I could seriously use it. I feel very lost.

Hi, sweetie. I’m sorry to hear you are going through this. Relationships are so challenging and it is really hard emotionally when things are not going well. Five years is a lot of time to invest in dating someone and most likely your boyfriend wants to be sure that your relationship is meant to be permanent. If he is questioning this now I think this is better than after marriage. Maybe he needs a little time to see how much you truly mean to him. Many times absence can make the heart grow fonder. If you hold on to him too tightly he may not get the chance to see how much he would miss you. If you can give him a little time to think things through he may arrive at the conclusion himself that you are the most important person to him. And if he doesn’t, isn’t it better to know now before going further and it being an even harder ending to your relationship? I do think things will work out for you for the best in the long run. Even if right now isn’t exactly what you hoped for, trust that God’s plan for you is best. God truly does love and care for you very much…more than any person ever could.
