They ask, why do nurses burn out? And we pause; we burn out in unexpected ways, and unexpected moments. We burn out from not being able to find an ABG kit at 2am in a supply closet, and we melt down where no one can see us. We burn out a thousand different ways that scream absurdity to anyone observing on the outside - but if you were to examine our hearts, souls and minds, the unspoken horrors that cause us to drop into a void, a sometimes reserved, seemingly uncaring, stoic state, the physical, emotional and psychological exhaustion of nuance that if we were to speak of wouldn’t be understood - so we burn out quietly over absurdities. We burn out over the small stuff, because if you ask us about the big stuff, it would cascade into infinity.
