Is it safe to use a menstrual cup when you have an IUD?

Someone asked us:

I’d really like to get an IUD, but I’ve been using a menstrual cup for the past year or so. I hated pads and tampons, so I really don’t want to give up using the cup. I have one friend with an IUD who says she still uses her cup and everything’s just fine, and another friend who says it’s unsafe for her to use her cup now that she has an IUD. What gives? Does it just depend on the person?

Don’t use a menstrual cup if you have an IUD. Using a menstrual cup can cause your IUD to move out of place. If this happens, you can get pregnant. If you have an IUD and you’ve been using a menstrual cup, check your IUD strings and contact your nurse or doctor if your IUD strings are missing, feel longer or shorter than normal, or if you feel the IUD itself.

There are many options for managing your period while you have an IUD. Since you don’t love wearing pads and tampons, you can try period underwear instead. Period underwear (AKA period panties) are just like regular underwear, except they have extra layers of fabric that absorb your menstrual blood during your period. There are different kinds of period underwear for light, medium, or heavy flow days.

Medieval soldier found with sword and knives at the bottom of a Lithuanian lake

More than 500 years ago, a medieval soldier’s dead body settled at the bottom of a Lithuanian lake, and for centuries it lay hidden beneath the mud. Now, those submerged remains have finally been found.

The skeleton was discovered during an underwater inspection of the old Dubingiai bridge in eastern Lithuania’s Lake Asveja. Though the skeleton lay under a layer of sand and silt, the scene was not a burial, said archaeologist Elena Pranckėnaitė, a researcher with Klaipėda University in Klaipėda, Lithuania, according to the Baltic News Service (BNS). Rather, water currents likely deposited sediments that covered the remains over time.

Scientists with the Faculty of Medicine at Vilnius University in Vilnius, Lithuania, examined the body and reported that the person was male and that he died in the 16th century, though they don’t yet know why he died, according to BNS. Read more.

i feel like a lot of white people in academia including myself sometimes forget that there is a huge difference between white conspiracy theorists being afraid of vaccines causing autism or whatever bullshit and POC, especially black people, fearing them bc of demonstrable abuse of medical power, including vaccines, against them. Like I strongly believe that the vaccine is meant to work correctly and isn’t anything malicious but treating POC like they’re stupid or anti intellectual for having reservations is not helpful to anyone.

I don’t think this issue is as split along racial lines as it’s represented here. Hundreds of thousands of poor white americans’ experience with medicine is:

1. getting turned away for not being able to afford care, and

2. having a loved one die of an opioid addiction that started from a prescription given by a doctor who got bribed by the company to prescribe it.

It’s definitely important that people of colour (mainly african americans but also other groups) have suffered worse at the hands of the US capitalist medical system, but mapping it along racial lines is a lot less descriptive than economic ones, and it leaves you less well equipped to actually understand what’s happening. The implication here that “well some people have a real reason to think this stuff” is valid, but continuing that into “those are the people of colour, it’s just the whites that are dummies” means that you’re only doing a clear-eyed materialist analysis for people of colour, when clearly that should be applied to everyone across the board. Not because it’s “reverse racism” or something, but because anything else ends up with you not understanding the fundamental problem that actually creates the terrible circumstances which are then dumped disproportionately on poc, and then any solution you come up with is not gonna fix it, because you have a misunderstanding of the problem
