AN EXTRAORDINARY DAY O God of power, I praise You for the privilege of living in the midst of one of Your extraordinary days. I see the signs of the awakening all about me—in the general thirst for transcendence, in the transformed lives of youth and young adults, and in the rise of aspirants for Christian service. THE JOURNEY’S SURPRISING TURN God of the Future, You have promised to be with me on my journey, but I often have difficulty sensing Your presence. I too at times am ready to give up and retrace my steps. Grant me patience to await Your disclosure, which may come when I have the “least hope.” Grant me perception to be alert to receive the surprises of Your grace; and grant me perseverance because I may be on the verge of a great awakening. THE ABSENCE OF GOD Heaven Father, deliver me from the darkness of Your absence. There is no greater darkness except hell itself. Almost anything else is bearable, except to be separated from Your presence. Help me to probe the experience of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and upon the cross understanding His desertion from the brightness of Easter morning. Help me to identify also with Brainerd, Your servant, and the anguish of his “dark night” when he sensed he was isolated from Your presence. Let me recall that his darkest moment was shortly followed by a great awakening and commit all things into Your hands. In my own darkness may I trust that You will lead me through “the night” until I walk in the sunlight once again. In Jesus’, Amen! AN INEFFECTIVE MINISTRY Oh Lord, deliver me from the darkness of an ineffective ministry. No one ever likes to fail, and yet so often the response to our personal witness is slight. Help me to believe that even when the situation appears to be as “dark as midnight,” I can still trust You and believe that the dawn will eventually come. Amen! CLOUDS OF MELANCHOLY LORD, deliver me from the darkness of melancholy. Often the illnesses of the mind are more severe than the maladies of the body. There is some consolation in knowing that many of the most sensitive saints who have traveled the pathways of the ‘inner life’ have also endured doubt, depression and despair. When the clouds of melancholy surround me and blur my vision, LORD, sharpen my memory to recall those times when Your presence was luminously clear. Grant me patience to believe that when these clouds of melancholy, which presently engulf me eventually move away, I will behold Your gracious presence once again. CHRONIC ILLNESS LORD, deliver me from the darkness of chronic illness. It is difficult to understand why some people suffer as they do; they often seem to be the best people I know. Grant that I may have greater appreciation for their ministry. Help me to deal creatively with my own illness. Prevent me from becoming bitter and estranged from Your will. Bless all physicians, nurses, researchers and others in the field of medical science that work to alleviate physical suffering. THE LONELINESS OF THE JOURNEY LORD, deliver me from the darkness of my loneliness. Your call beckons me to venture forth along unknown paths where I would not ordinarily go, and sometimes the journey becomes lonely. Strengthen me in such moments of desolation with Your peace so that I may trust that You are present with me even though You are present in a way I cannot fully comprehend. In Jesus’ name, Amen! INTERCESSION: EMPATHY FOR OTHER RACES Eternal Father, teach me how to intercede for others. Grant me empathy to view things from the other side. May I learn to sit where other people sit. [As a person white in color] help me to identify with the red, black, brown and yellow peoples of the world and see things as they see them. Infuse me with the universality of Jesus’ compassion. THE HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I.
