MALALA YOUSAFZAI is a 14 year-old advocate of girls education in Pakistan. She was shot in the head and throat for her beliefs by the Pakistani Taliban. Love, Lucy stands for right for girls to be educated. Anyone who has any issues regarding this can come make themselves heard at our office at 218 Montrose Ave in Brooklyn.

A little something about one of my favorite photographs. 

Simen Johan (Norwegian, 1973) Untitled #133, From the series "Until the Kingdom Comes", C-Print 71x91 ½ in 2005.

Johan is a New York based artist. In 1996 he graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA in photography and has since exhibited regularly in New York at Yossi Milo Gallery. Johan’s work is held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston amongst others.

The photograph is a dramatic depiction of two burly bull elks fighting on a ridge overlooking a valley. Yellow parakeets are also scattered across the frame, either flying or taking acrobatic turns in the background, and perched either on the elk’s antlers or on the ground in the foreground. The bull in the left of the frame appears to be winning the fight, delivering his antlers into the trunk of the elk on the right using his hind leg to exert force into the maneuver. Both elk however, are injured. Johan creates a sense of drama through the use of dark ominous clouds and a desaturated palette.

To avoid suggesting any interpretations of the image, Johan chooses only to name the series to which his images belong, titling individual images with only numbers. The artist personifies the subjects of his photograph, providing them with humanistic allusions in their pose, gaze and interaction, in this case the primary emotion being hatred between the battling elks, and audience curiosity amongst the birds. The image exists at a juncture between real and fantasy; it appears realistic, and to an extent it can be argued that it is a depiction of an actual phenomenon. However Johan pushes the boundaries of digital manipulation to create an image that can exist in this form only in imagination, alluding it to the post-impressionist paintings of Henri Rousseau.
