Hello!!! honestly I've been quite slow with it because school has been stressful but so far I'm enjoying it a whole lot! environmental, mysterious and and episodic (at least from what I'm seeing so far) stuff is right up my alley. and tysm <3 <3

I've been feeling a bit art blocked and what used to help was redrawing HoFL panels. I've wanted to draw more Ane-san Yaichi ever since I reread it last summer <3

I was actually kinda angry drawing this lol - my first attempt got stained with black ink (in a not artistic way) and I was just uuurghhasdhnngg >:( almost all the way through this drawing. I used leftover colours on my palette that turned out a bit too cold so I used a yellow overlay layer. The original below the cut :)

OH MY GOD I WAS LITERALLY THINKING THIS

masa and bun do look extremely alike but also extremely different at the same time. How is that possible?? ono is actually a god at character design and subtle details especially, I also love how you'd I think I'd confuse some characters for others (like okinu and sachi) but they too have their differences.

I love onos artstyle so much.

I love how much they show bun that being in that environment makes masa happy. I know it's probably not their intention, but the way they talk about him also makes me think they might be trying to tell bun that masa is safe there because they dont know what he actually wants to tell masa yet.

Ough the fact that hes paler than usual implies hes not taking care of himself too well doesnt it? Or maybe hes been drinking too much without eating. I wonder if this'll be clarified

Is it just me or whenever I see masa being sad I become a little sad too.. especially when hes around his family, like you can see here that he's trying to approach bun kindly but all bun brings up is money and the households life being troublesome. It's like hes not even trying to be kind like okay. I sort of get why he's acting this way and why he feels hes a failure but still.

I also hate that this is how he's known as :(

Okay so I know I just said I get pissed whenever bun makes masa feel bad but I still do believe that he loves masa. He just doesn't want to show it because of the reason I've alr brought up in the previous chapters. So I do agree with what's said on this panel. He also has a long way to go

OH MY PARALLELS theyre not even subtext theyre in the text. This may be one of my favorite scenes in the whole manga, it showcases how caring masa is to his family, yet despite that, he sees himself as pathetic because he can't uphold the family honor due to his social anxiety..he can't truly honor his family in a traditional way and he's despised for it. HALLO I'M BACK SERIOUSLY THIS TIME I will probably make a change to this series aka I won't do a chapter every day probably. but I still want to continue regardless!!

so, ch 36...WAIT IT'S A NEW VOLUME!!

volume 6!! I'm pretty sure this is the masa and bun focused one, I'm pretty excited :)

I'm so happy he received the sachi letters, and is as well, look at his smile! Theyre so adorable.

But masa still wanting to see him is so sweet. Now I'm thinking about something, and it's still about masas fiance because it's still crazy it wasn't brought up ever again. I'm wondering if bun ever knew her. I have this headcanon that sometimes, when bun has those flashbacks about masa at this current point in the story, he thinks about her too and how even if they split + masas personality issue, you could tell he was still very kind towards her. Obviously bun doesn't have an entirely good opinion on masa yet, I think his thoughts rn are conflicting and mostly conditioned by his role in the family.

This is interesting to me because yes while this is about bun, I've spoken several times about how poetic I think masa is, especially when he talks about other people. In general he expresses himself in a very fascinating way. I think he wouldve been such a good poet if he had the chance to.

Interesting how ume caught on. It does make sense I mean, yaichi does work him extremely hard and I'd argue his job is one of the most dangerous ones that requires a very precise skill set. matsu must really feel the need to do this if he keeps doing it regardless of the hard work.

I also love that when ume says "something in you" masas eyes open up, as if he were thinking "Huh..I do too, matsu" which leads to this tangent because I want to talk about them more.

I have to talk about more masa and matsu parallels because I always do, and now it's about their jobs. Both masa and matsu have to work with other people, matsu with his business personality and masa faking being a bodyguard when they're doing gang jobs. However masa ALWAYS works with others, while matsu doesn't. when they're doing gang jobs he always relays information to yaichi specifically and then works in the shadows all by himself. Which I think nods to his fairly quiet personality especially present at the start of the manga.

however matsu does open up and tries to be less. passive I guess? around yaichi, LIKE masa and BECAUSE of masa.

matsumasa are so intertwined you can't separate them when talking about hofl relationships.

I think he reason why yaichi is saying this now is to push masa (and maybe ume too) away from wanting to be with him, either because at this point of the story yaichi is being forced to remember his past and this is a form of self loathing ("I was a terrible person in the past who killed many people so the fact that these people love me so much makes no sense so I'm going to try and cut their love")

orrr because he could connect the fact that matsu is acting like that towards yaichi because he found inspiration from masa and now he wants to get rid of the source of this inspiration because he's sick of it all.

Either or, before it was always other characters warning masa to not pry into yaichis life, pointlessly driving him away while he insisted he wanted to get closer to him. Yet I don't think this is too useful as masa has already grasped some things about yaichis life purely from clues, like he's piecing a puzzle together.

This is funny because I always associate the cat with masa, because of the big eyes and the fact that theyre always together. And masa changed a lot throughout the story, he has grown so much..

genuinely I don't think I can read it anymore because of how much of a chore it feels. The anime was so much better than the manga but even then, I'd still never watch it again. I'm tired of masa being so whiny all the time too like can't he just shut up

Listen I know he was kidding to make ume feel mad BUT it would've been a very cute scene to see hehe

kinda like you ginta! You prefer the five leaves know but before you'd always go from place to place. Theyre so similar it hurts

I love how happy okinu is about ume saying this, and the fact that the characters are slowly realizing (VERY slowly when it comes to matsu)that what is uniting them together is more the fact they'd always be there for each other and that they genuinely care for each other like family SO MUCH than them needing to do it to survive. It used to be that, but they're growing

One of my favorite parts of matsus characters that are still pretty fucking tragic is that, in the end, he always passively "succumbs" to yaichi despite trying not to do so, it's mainly because he is in love with him, unlike masa who tends to insist more on yaichi despite sometimes not respecting his wishes. and matsu tries to act this way as well and he is rejected for this too.

both of their relationships are very flawed and that's why they're so well written

HE KNOWS he IS SO SMART yet kinda stupid at the same time. I'm never going to forget that scene about the burn scar, masa 😭 /j

I love how close he actually is to understanding yaichi, he has a pretty good read on him, and is very perceptive in regards to him specifically. He's so special to masa <3

OH MY GOD HE'S SO ME especially the whole "I don't understand why he acts this was he has so many skills and has the potential to be a great swordsman and reach what he's actually striving for" HE'S SO RELATABLE

it's like he could sense him being there. I know this doesnt make sense but it specifically being yaichi who found him makes me wonder a little.

I mentioned prior that yaichi is someone who's extremely difficult to deviate from his current path, and it sesms like masa is one of the very few people who is actually able to sort of do it or even make yaichi reconsider some things. So it makes sense why, to get closer to yaichi, you'd take advantage of masa the most. I definitely believe yagis taking advantage of him

I rly want to talk about him too waaah

sachi and masa are so special to me.. masa feels like he has disappointed his family because of his personality, but sachi loves him anyway. I love her too <3

I love how both bun and masa are extremely tied to their family, but bun is more traditional in the sense that what he cared the most about is his biological family's honor and he'd even commit bribery for it, while masa *also* cares about protecting the found family in edo. I will say though bun was conditioned to behave this way because of his talent and his role in the family when masa left, so I'm not saying he's necessarily bad for it.

They're both still very hard workers !! and so is sachi ofc

NOONO Masa can speak extremely well if wants to!! He just has to grow a bit more okay, he's very poetic. He doesn't only have a sword.

Again it's still funny to see this after masa ends up not conforming to the traditional ideals of being a samurai despite still striving for them at this point in the story.

do NOT slander him like that okay. I know this is meant to give us buns family background and what's pushing him to think of masa that way but that won't stop me from being mad at Izumi. I will however give bun some leeway because flashbacks like this one.

do show the he does still love masa, his actions speak against his thoughts just because he was socially conditioned to act this way.

Ch 33 lets get it!!

Mass has such difficulties taking compliments.. I've explained why I think so already but it does make me feel a little bad. I'm glad however that he's starting to recognize his skills a little more cause he can be extremely strong. And also making more friends, even if some of it just yagi trying to investigate.

I'm telling you, one can't help but love him, even with his faults!

Also I feel like if hofl was more well known EVERYONE would be quoting masa, because hofl is already quotable on its own with its many metaphors but masa sometimes says stuff that I want framed on a wall. Maybe I'm a little biased because I love him so much

Well I do feel like as an officer you kind of have to be like this, especially around someone like yaichi who tends to hide everything, no doubt 😭

Also ginta looks so bored here, both in looks and the way he speaks, compared to when he is with the five leaves, you can tell from these little details that he does enjoy being around the the most.

Of course yaichi, of course you dont. I mentioned the everyday life activities in my last posts and how yaichi seems more comfortable around them, but this entirely depends on the people he's with.

Buut I want to talk about something. I love the atmosphere of this scene. Drinking in the dark and letting all of your memories out. I'm imagining the anime's ost with this too. I remember this scene being adapted pretty well (I mean the atmosphere is what the hofl anime does best by FAR) but not the song they used for it. I assume it's great like all the others, especially the more haunting songs like "Kono mune de oyasumi"

I think yagis strength is similar to masas in a way. Hes very observant, and is probably telling this story on purpose to analyze yaichis behavior and reactions towards it to gain more clues. This explains the panning on yaichis baffled expression.

I remember a scene at the end of the manga where masa is called yaichi (because yaichi feels more like a title than a name as the story goes on, I wonder if the etymology of it has to do with that) so it's fun to hear yagis words now because technically, both yaichi and seinoshin came back.
