“. . . and lunge!” luke yelled, his voice echoing in the valley.
you watched as twenty clumsy campers lunged forward with their swords in hand, jabbing at mannequins posed as the opposition. one camper—a young girl from the hermes cabin, no older than ten—tripped on a stone, landing on the floor with a thud and a groan.
you stood from your seat on the grass, walking over and kneeling down beside her. you studied her knee, where a thin trickle of blood was spilling from a cut. “you’re okay,” you reassured her.
you held her head to your chest, keeping her close to shield her from the piercing gaze of the other campers. tears pooled in her eyes, threatening to spill.
“it’s just a graze, love, we’ll get will to fix it for you.” your voice was soft, as comforting as you could make it.
a crowd of campers had already gathered around, scrambling over each other to get a look. “hey, back up.” luke made his way through the crowd, kneeling on the other side of the girl. he prodded at her knee, watching her face for any reactions.
“well, the good thing is: it isn’t broken, only a little bruised, the bad thing is: you’re gonna need a bandaid.” he told her.
you smiled at him as he looked up to meet your gaze, blinking three times in your secret signal—”i love you.”
he lifted her in his arms, standing back to his full height. she marvelled at how high off the ground she was, forgetting all about the blood spilling from her graze. her eyes were dry, now lit up with joy.
“back to your positions, y/n will continue from here.” luke told the other campers.
they all looked to you, then returned to their positions on the field.
you walked through the rows of children, watching luke wander off with the injured girl.
“y/n, you and luke are like the camp parents!” a camper shouted with a laugh.
laughter burst from the rest of the crowd, and you couldn’t help but smile yourself.
