Hello! I've just stumbled upon your blog and it's soooooo awesome! I love your art and gifs and everything. Can I ask you for some tips on how to make gifs? Like what program and techniques you use or something like that. I really, really like your style. Thank you so much!
Hey, @iiping!
First of all, thanks! I’m blushing really hard right now because I also love your art (especially, but not exclusively, your bubbline stuff)!
Let me start by saying that I never formally learned illustration or animation, so my process may not be very efficient and may not work well with other drawing styles.
I use GIMP (because it’s free ahahah), but making gifs with GIMP is basically the same as Photoshop or similar programs (though I don’t know of any drawing apps for phones that can make animated gifs).
The very basics: In a gif, each layer of your drawing becomes a frame in your animation. If there are any transparent areas in a layer, that portion of the previous frame will show through when the animation plays.
Next, the process:
1. Have an idea
2. Sketch out and roughly time the major frames (in GIMP, the length of the frame is determined in the layer name, e.g. Garbage Town 1 (80ms) denotes that the layer Garbage Town 1 will play for 80 milliseconds)
3. Sketch the frames in between to smooth out the animation
4. Clean up
5. Color & backgrounds
And that’s basically it!
